Teenage years are the times for new experiences and music was no different as the experience marked with great memories of music that is very nostalgic and can be attached to moments good or bad that make us reminisce when we hear the music of our child hood. I am Mexican and my teenage years I spent in Mexico until I was sixteen when my family migrated to the united states however I didn’t really understood English I can honestly say that I like Rock En Espanol and would not hesitate to say that it is my favorite genre of music when I was a teenager, I will try my best to share my favorite music as I reminisce on some great music in my past. As a teenager growing up in Mexico I wasn’t really interested in listening to music, as my interest were sports and television. The musical influences that I can recall in my early childhood, were those of my parents. Who would listen to Corridos and Rancheras, which were a type of folk Mexican revolutionary music, they would sing about the struggles in life during the Mexican civil war. As I grew up the type of music my friends listen to were Cumbias Colombianas and Rock En Espanol those were my early memories of music which I still listen and enjoy today. I would listen to Rock En Espanol artist like Café Tacuba, Caifanes, Mana, Maldita Vecindad, Enanitos Verdes, and Fabulosos Cadillacs. I began listening more to the lyrics and the sound of the music for example, Maldita Vecindad has a Rock sound that evolved into a Ska sound.
On April 16, 1971 the famous singer Selena Quintanilla was born and her music became popular and is to this day. When she was growing up she had a talent of singing and dancing and by the age of around 10 she became the lead singer in her family’s band called the Selena Y Los Dinos. From there on out she became a popular singer in the Tejano music. She was known as the “Queen of Tejano”. This affected many people, her music was so great that people liked to dance along with her music. There was people who grew up listening to Selena, an example is me, I grew up listening to her music and loved it. I would listen to her music when I got the chance and just close my eyes and be mesmerized by her music. There are people out there today that when they listen to her music they are affected by her singing and just let go and dance to the rhythm.
Spanish-language music enhances the development of self-identity of students in a university setting where the music is uncommon because music builds on culture and makes students more aware of their culture and their roots. In “Reclaiming Latino Identity: An Attitudinal Study of the Influence of Rock En Español on Latino Cultural Identity,” Elisa Sahagan notes that the genre of music has assisted Latinos to maintain Spanish-speaking skills and brought them closer to their culture (1). One reason being is it is a crucial part of shaping individuals’ identities. Listening to Spanish-language music assists Latino students to maintain a balance and shape their identities. First, Spanish-language music, such as Norteñas and Corridos, tell stories
“ You got no fuckin’ idea what La Raza means…It’s about our people out there working…Surviving with pride and dignity, that’s La Raza” (Frost, “La Raza, Part II”). Many people in American society keep social activities and music in two entirely different categories. Nevertheless, such classification fails to recognize how social activities and music may enlighten each other. The correlation between the major ever-changing experiences of Chicana/os has shaped Chicano music in the United States. Which showcases that music can be a powerful instrument to communicating the voice of social activities. In the twenty-first century Chianca/os continues to battle with issues of oppression, power empowerment, resistance, violence, and identity crisis.
When I was in fifth grade, I was caught between two worlds, playing a woodwind or string instrument. If I played a woodwind instrument I would have to blow in it to make music, but string instruments are played with a bow to make music. After much thought, I decided that the violin was the best instrument for me, because it has a beautiful, unique sound, plus the possibilities are never-ending. I could receive a compliment from a teacher, or even get accepted to the symphony.
Listening to the lyrics of your favorite song you automatically start to have a connection with that song. Then the song starts to represent you and your life because of the lyrics. Some songs show about being a fighter, having freedom, or just being you. There's a billion of songs out there and there's a billion of people who connect with those songs. Usually the most common reason why some songs represent people is by their past experience. For me some songs represent me because I decided to follow my dreams, living in the moment, and get right back up.
In my personal experience, Mexican music has revolved around my life for as long as I can remember. Growing up in a bordertown has its Hispanic heritage. Whether I was at home, school, or even in public places, I would hear Spanish related music playing in the background. I believe Spanish music holds many values when it comes to different occasions. The music can manipulate the minds of its listeners using love, passion, and outstanding rhythms. After reading an article online, I can explain how three different genres of traditional Mexican music influence people’s culture.
Living in the twenty-first century where everything is temporary, it is difficult to find any type of art that represents and inspires a group of people. However, for Latinos and Latinas of all ages, Selena Quintanilla became a symbol of the Latin music. Thus, influencing many new artists and other people with her songs and perseverance in life. Born in Lake Jackson, Texas, Selena became the Queen of the Tejano music. Twenty-three years after the death of the young Mexican-American artist, her songs and personality that once defined her continue to influence many Latinos and Latinas.
Mexican folk songs or corridos have encounter great change over the years. Some of the changes of corridos can be credited to the different culture we live in now. Corridos in the past have been about the Mexican-American War, but most recently corridos began to be about life struggles such as immigration and the violent drug war. While the topics of corridos have changed over the years, corridos keep a familiar format with focusing on key issues of oppression, daily life, and socially relevant events. In addition, corridos may help spread attention to events going around society that has not been brought up in the media. This at time may be informative or controversial depending on what the artist feel like talking about. Corridos try be about current issues to stay revelate in the music industry. Corridos have a huge following in Mexico because of its strong roots. Its speculated that corridos originated during the Mexican-American war to narrate the battles and war generals of those wars. Much has changed since that Mexican-American war era, but one thing still remains and that the popularity of corridos. Although corridos have much of the same structure as the past, they have changed in a great deal because of the different trends going on in society
Ever since I was a small child, I have loved music. The strong, steady beats, the
Almost everyone listens to music and people tend to have their own taste or style of music. My taste of music has changed throughout middle school to highschool, however it is not too drastic. The style of music went from ultimate fangirl of boy bands such as One Direction or Five Seconds of Summer, to listening to Frank Ocean and The Weeknd. Not only that, but I’ve also started to dig in with my ethnicity and started listening to spanish music on my own time. My experiences at parties and being around my family with them blasting banda sparked my interest to listen to spanish music. Listening to spanish music also helped with my spanish since unfortunately, I am taking french instead of spanish for my language course. These changes have made me love and appreciate both spanish and english music, which is an important part of my life.
The Musical Composition that has changed my life to how I see music is the song The Stroke from Billy Squier. I did not really know the meaning of the song, but it really Widened my Horizon in terms of music from only before listening to The Beatles, The Beach Boys, and The Monkeys. Then later being able to listen to Rush, AC/DC, Aerosmith And Other Really good rock bands that I still love today. Then I started collecting Records then I started collecting CDs, the first album I bought for myself is the majestic Black Sabbath Album “Paranoid” The album with the musical compositions Paranoid, Iron Man, War Pigs/Luke’s Wall, Planet Caravan, Rat Salad, Electric Funeral, And Fairies Wear Boots. This album was such an amazing introduction to Black
Musical instruments have played many major roles in helping with the construction of many societies around the world today. Many people do not realize what musical instruments have been responsible for and how they have helped shape the world today. There have been many instruments that have helped create and sculpt the world, but one instrument that I want to inform readers about is the trumpet and where it came from, as well as how it has changed over many years. The point that I am arguing is the fact that many people do not know where the trumpet has come from and how it has affected society.
What is the only art that can be felt? Music is the answer. We can't touch music, but music touches us. It is an expression of certain aesthetic ideas through rhythm, tune and language. Music is that bridge which connects our soul-that inner self in us which is hidden from the society and even our conscious selves, to the outside world, or more specifically, to other people's souls. For this reason I have been able to devote the time and energy necessary to musical accomplishment even though money has always been tight and that’s why I need a strong financial support to reach my dreams.
I was raised around many types of music, and I have heard many different songs. However, there is one music group that I have listened to off and on for a very long time. This group is Blue October, and I have listened to them since I was six years old when my mother first introduced me. The music from Blue October is ever changing and has been linear to my ever changing life. I love the music that they make because it is real and alive. I look for sincear songs; Blue October meets this expectation that I have.
I love handmade craft items, I appreciate the effort and skill required to produce a saleable item that someone would be proud to use or display in in their home. Who doesn’t appreciate the creation of beauty and practicality? There has been an upsurge in the number of craft stores, especially here in Cyprus. Whether people are turning their personal skills into an additional income, after the financial crisis, retirees looking to supplement their pensions or just pay for their hobbies.
