Everything from the title, to the last line needs to be thought about more than once. The story isn't just about a farmer's wife who likes pretty flowers. Not in the least! The Chrysanthemums is a story about how Elisa Allen is forced to a life that she feels is trapping her. The story is set in the early twentieth century and these times don't allow for just any woman to leave her ordinary, socially and politically correct life.      The monarch butterfly, as known as Danaus plexippus, is often called the milkweed butterfly because its larvae eat the milkweed plant. They are also sometimes called "royalty butterflies" because their family name comes from the daughter of Danaus, ruler of Argos. There are many other interesting facts about this butterfly including its anatomy and life cycle, where the butterfly lies on the food chain, the migration from Canada to Mexico, why the butterfly is being threatened, and lastly, what is being done to help the butterfly.

“The Flowers” by Alice Walker is a short story written in the 1970’s. The story focuses on Myop, a ten year old African American girl who loves to explore the land in which she lives. Carefree and naïve, Myop decides to travel further away from her ‘Sharecropper cabin’ and travels deep inside the woods to unfamiliar land where she discovers the decomposed body of an African American man. It is then Myop quickly grows up and suddenly becomes aware of the world in which she lives. The story relies on setting and symbolism to convey the theme of departing innocence.

The Flowers By Alice Walker Written in the 1970's The Flowers is set in the deep south of America and is about Myop, a small 10-year old African American girl who explores the grounds in which she lives. Walker explores how Myop reacts in different situations. She writes from a third person perspective of Myop's exploration. In the first two paragraph Walker clearly emphasises Myop's purity and young innocence.

The main themes of this book is not to far from the reality of every persons life. Not everyone has to live in a tyranny and fight for freedom to live but the fact is you still need to fight for something. Life is filled with struggles and that goes to different extents for different people. For the sisters in, In The Time of The Butterflies they had to go through an extreme part of their lives together and ended up not coming out the same. They were dependent on each other yet they were independent at the same time. The main theme I picked up from this book was the faith they had. The faith they had with each other, the faith they had to survive but most importantly the faith they had for themselves. They had faith as independent woman

“Sister Flowers,” is a descriptive narrative by Maya Angelou. This piece was taken from her first of six autobiographies, Why the Caged Bird Sings (1970). Angelou, with much admiration and respect, describes a woman by the name of Sister Flowers as, “the aristocrat of Black Stamps”(87), “the measure of what a human being can be”(88), and educated. Angelou, who became mute almost a year earlier after being raped at the age of eight, was at a low point in her life. She describes how she initially encountered Sister Flowers by stating, “Then I met, or rather got to know, the lady who threw me my first life line”(87). Sister Flowers shared her love for literature with Angelou and influenced her to begin speaking again.

This second journal is based on chapters five to seven of In The Time of the Butterflies. I think that these chapters are very important for the plot of the novel. Chapter five is from Dede's perspective. In this chapter, Dede and her sister Minerva meet a man named Lio, and he is a revolutionist like Minerva. They fall in love, but Minerva does not want to admit it. Later, Lio decides to move to a safer location because his protests are getting him in trouble with the government. He writes a letter for Minerva and gives it to Dede so that she could bring the letter to her sister. However, Dede reads the letter and finds out that Lio wants to ask Minerva to move with him, so Dede burns the letter to keep her sister safe with her family. I think

John Steinbeck’s, The Chrysanthemums, was published in 1938 in a book of short stories, entitled The Long Valley. The Chrysanthemums has been a rather powerful draw for scholars because of its wide gap for interpretations and analysis of its main protagonist character, Elisa Allen and also the unique descriptions used to portray the deeper meaning behind the setting of the story.
