My First Sentence As A Child

I have been told that my first sentence as a child was “I want to read” and this short sentence became the song of my childhood. As a young child I would listen to my mother read an abundance of stories aloud to me. It was my absolute favorite part of the day. I was homeschooled from kindergarten to second grade and the curriculum my mother chose was reading based. This emphasis on reading inspired me to learn how. I was fascinated by the strange figures I would later learn were letters with specific meanings. When at last I achieved what I so desperately hoped for, literacy I experienced pure joy from the new world that opened up to me. The concept was a good one, every book has a number of points, and when finished the reader can take an online quiz about the book. The quiz determines how well you read the book and the reader is allotted points. It was part of the reading program at my school and I hated it. I despised being forced to read for “fun”. It can’t be fun if it affects your grade. It was such a weight on my mind, that I chose to ignore it. I put down books forever. I paid little attention to academia and as a result I was put into the lower level classes in junior high, ultimately setting me one year behind regular and honors students in subjects like math and science. In junior high I decided I was going to be good at school. I was tired of not understanding, and not making the grades I desired. My success was immediate, in everything but English. My relationship with writing began when I was in the seventh grade. I walked into class one day and my teacher showed us an outline of the MLA style formatting. That was about it. I felt like I was thrown into writing papers, with no idea how. I was cast into confusion. It is a truly horrid feeling to know one has a task to complete, but no idea how to go about completing it. I only learned about in-text citations, and headers in highschool, when I was receiving marks off for not having them. I grew to dread English class because which was mainly a mix of writing (which confused me) and grammar (which I never understood, and still don’t).
