My Leadership On The Navy's Chief Officer Mission

My organizational knowledge comes from serving over 27 years in the military and being able to work my way from the bottom of the enlisted ranks to the top. Taking on challenging positions throughout my career and being successful has been a key to my success, but does not come without hard work and determination. I focus my leadership on the Navy’s Chief Petty Officer mission, vision, and guiding principles. It breaks down into seven categories starting with Deckplate Leadership, Institutional and Technical Expertise, Professionalism, Loyalty, Character, Active Communication, and Sense of Heritage.

I utilized the training and mentorship I received during Chief’s initiation to mold them into a team above everything else. On the first day in Iraq, we were in a gridlock in a city with nowhere to go. There were thousands of Iraqi civilians out on the streets and I exited my vehicle alone and walked the convoy out of the city as I moved traffic so the convoy could proceed. The courage and risk I took for my team was infectious and every one of them would follow me anywhere from that day forward.
Institutional and Technical Expertise Leadership is not just about leading people. A great leader will be an expert in their field. When a leader is recognized by the people they lead as an expert, they will be sought after for advice and guidance in more than just their field of work or study. This helps in their approachability to the people they lead and builds a degree of trust.
Professionalism
Professionalism is the backbone of what drives leadership. A leader who is professional in how they carry themselves and how they interact with their personnel earns respect with the people they lead. Their professionalism spawns from their core beliefs of integrity, character, and ethical values. A leader has to abide by an uncompromising level of integrity.
