To me, it is important that you give back what you have gotten from people around you, your community, and your school. Volunteering gives you the opportunity to help others, meet new people, and also learn new skills. In one of my volunteering experiences I was able to not particularly, learn but build on my leadership skill. Leadership to most, is an arbitrary term used to define a person’s ability to direct a group of people. But what most don't know is that, leadership is not only one type of person, and the traits of leaders differ depending on each person as well. However, even with this being true, all leaders better their environment and maintain a positive environment in which makes working in a team more efficient. One example of leadership and it’s traits accompanying it as well, would be when I partook in a final exam review for psychology at Houston Community College and helped college students prepare for the exam. …show more content…
Psi Beta’s mission statement is, “..To encourage professional development and psychological literacy of all students at two-year colleges through promotion and recognition of excellence in scholarship, leadership, research, and community service.”. The purpose of the review was to prepare students for the upcoming week of finals and also, to promote psychology and how it affects everyone in one way or another. In the final exam review, the members of our chapter of Psi Beta, each studied around 2-3 chapters of the required materials that would be on the exam and then in groups of two seperated in a couple of rooms in one hallway. Then we would explain the chapter and then answer any questions that any of the students asked, but it was not like a regular class, in a sense that we went through only the places that the students asked and had obstacles
During one volunteer service dating back to when I was a freshman in high school, and still participate in today, was by working together with other parishioners from my church to help set up the St. Jude’s Sweet Corn Festival. We all worked together to make sure every fence, every booth, and every pole were safe and sturdy to ensure that people would have a good time. I later volunteered again multiple times during the festival to serve the people by offering food and beverages to those that were hungry during the festival. Again, this trait shows the importance of a good leader by being able to work together with his or her peers to ensure that everything according to the task at hand can and will go
Growing up, I realize the important leadership roles that should be recognized in every day life. Leadership is an important part of one's self character because when someone sees you as a leader they tend to grow more onto you so they can be like you. Part of this statement fits a powerful quote i've always lived by while being around others. "It is the men behind who make the man ahead," this quote by Merle Crowell, fits the man I've molded into, simply because I have realized in numerous ways on how my actions can impact other people's actions. My parents always raised me to believe that what you put in is what you get out. So of course, I believe that if I make the decisions to be a follower of the wrong path, then wrong will follow me as well. Instead, I choose to take the golden path and promote a better outcome for my future and hopefully other's also. Sticking to the routine of a leader builds you into an even better leader. Being a better leader, makes me a better man each day that I choose this route as the leader of my path.
When I think of a leader I look back on how many people in my life that have helped me to get where I am today. My parents are authority figures in the sense that they are the ones that showed me right from wrong. There are the administrators that helped me along my way with school and completing all of the work that I needed to in order to make my way in this long road called life. Finally there are the instructors that have shown me the ways on how to become a leader myself. When I think of the word leader I do not think of myself right away, but now that I have taken on different roles in my life I have realized that maybe just maybe that I could become my own leader.
A leader is someone who guides and motivates you. Leadership is a responsibility, and is very important. Without leaders what would the world look like? People need leaders to help, aid, and guide them through tough times and make important decisions. I play multiple sports, and they all have a captain to make sure everything goes right, and is there for the team when things do not. Leaders set an important example for others. Overall, leadership is putting others before yourself, and showing the world that anything is possible.
When leading troops it is essential for the leader to understand his or her command environment and how they fit in to that environment. For me, becoming an effective leader begins with this: How do I fit in to my organization and what can I offer my organization and the Soldiers that look to me for guidance. To become an effective leader I have had to address this issue first and foremost. My philosophy is simple, know the needs of the organization, know my personal strengths and weaknesses, and know my Soldiers. This is the philosophy that I try to pass to my subordinates. By knowing these three simple statements I have found that I can become a more effective team member as well as leader to both enlisted and officers alike who look to me for guidance.
There are several characteristics a person in a leadership role should portray. My philosophy of leadership encompasses characteristics such as compassion, collaboration, innovation, perseverance, and competence. I believe to be a competent leader one must be authentic to one’s self and beliefs. One must know where he or she stands concerning ethics and innovations surrounding the education field. A leader must convey understanding, be on the forefront of research, advocate for colleagues and students, and collaborate with other professionals.
Throughout my life, I have never really been a follower in the typical sense. While I have looked to people older than me for help and advice. In addition, I never really saw myself as a typical leader. What I mean by that is I felt that I was a leader by doing my own thing and not worrying about everyone else or being a part of a particular clique. What I realized by just going about my business is that my attitude attracted others in the sense that they knew I was about work and wanted to emulate my demeanor in order for to be successful in school. One time that I recall in which I had to lead a team of my peers was this past summer. I enrolled in a few summer classes in order to better prepare me for college. For one of my classes
There have been many things in my life that have molded me into the leader I am today. Various people and groups along the way have taught me so much about what it means to be a leader. There were so many things that impacted my life and leadership.
Leadership is a privilege that carries with it many responsibilities to inspire others, and to direct individuals to attain the vision and goals of an organization. As an effective leader it is my job to be flexible, be an excellent communicator, be a person who leads by example, and is an individual who is committed, resourceful, and reflective. Achieving the characteristics above, I have developed a definite purpose in mind; one that is shared and modeled in and outside of my school environment. With such growth mindset, I teach, present workshops and empowers others to make decisions that will develop future leaders. To lead by example, I became a mentor for first-year teachers. Furthermore, I orchestrate educational committees, encouraging
Imagine you’re going on a hike through the woods, and after an hour or two you’re ready to head back, but as you look around at all your friends you realize no one knows how to get back. Being a leader means coming forward and taking charge, and figuring out the safest and fastest way to get you and your friends back home to safety. Many leaders have many different behaviors and ways that they lead. Many times my friends turn to me to make decisions about what we will do, where we will go, or simply where we will eat. My actions toward the situation define my leadership skills.
"The day soldiers stop bringing you their problems is the day you have stopped leading them. They have either lost confidence that you can help them or concluded that you do not care. Either case is a failure of leadership." General Colin Powell
I believe that I'm good in coming up with optimizing and innovative solutions. I feel good when I learn something new. I like when I can do something in a new way. I believe I have leadership skills. I’m emotionally stable and will remain calm under difficult situations. I can manage people with different personalities and can encourage them for improvement.
Many people are leaders but some are not. It take a lot to be a leader. What does it take to be a good leader? Am I a leader or a follower? How do I know I’m a leader or a follower? Who follows me and when do they follow? When and where do I follow and can leaders cause difficulties for Christians? All of these questions will be addressed in this paper. I hope these questions make you think about yourself and help you become a better leader.
I would like to start my essay with the reason I want part of TET. Leadership. Vision.
“Volunteers are not paid--not because they are worthless, but because they are priceless” (Into The Wild). As the quote mentions, volunteers do not get paid, but they serve for others that are in need and the value is worth much more than money. Life is not always about wealth. Time is valuable too and if a person spends a little time off of their phone to help a great cause, it could save many lives or even lead to a bright smile. In leadership class this semester, I have taken time out of my busy schedule to aid others happiness, which pleases me in the end. Reflecting upon my experiences, I have used three main standards of a leader such as engaging in strategic planning, facilitating productive group process, and showing initiative.
