Learning has always been on of my favorite things to do. Partially because I've always done well in school, but also due to my innate desire to know everything. I hate not understanding anything whether it be how a battery works or why a person makes the choices they do. As a teenager, I have been in school all my life, which has been my primary source of information. Classroom education can certainly have its limits due to the confined environment, but my teachers and classes have opened my mind to see the world around me. The simplest things like basic addition and plural noun conventions seem so obvious to me now, but at one point, I had a teacher to explain these concepts to me. As these lessons have evolved into solving differential equations and composing analysis of complex literary works, I have been able to expand my brain. My learning experiences have expanded beyond the classroom in a more immersive, hands-on capacity. With my parents, I have been able to travel both inside and outside the country, showing me about different cultures and ways of life. Moreover, my time doing competitive robotics and
The more I learn, the smarter I become of course. However, education does more than increase my intelligence. It also shapes my character. I believe that character is something that have varying definitions to different people. Personally, character is sum of the qualities, both ethical and cognitive, that makes a person unique and guide their choices. I would say
1. List and briefly describe the two most significant distinctions or awards you have earned at university/college/CEGEP, or upper years in high school.
People’s experiences shape their lives and influence the choices they make, their expectations, and formulate their behavior and mindset. I have always loved to learn! As a child, I was constantly at the library and playing school. I recall being in 5th grade when my teacher handed me the science manual and a box of equipment, and asked me to ‘figure it out’ and recreate it for the class. I couldn’t have been more thrilled!
High School: A time in our lives that sets the mold for who we are going to be in this world. It does this by teaching us great lessons about life, ourselves, and other people through various experiences. One of these experiences I chose to take part in was football. It was this decision that led me to this fateful day. A day in which my left leg was shattered and my perspectives on life were drastically changed. The journey I had embark on to deal with all of the after effects of this event taught me life lessons I’ll never forget.
Ever since I was young, and began my education, learning was one of the most exciting ideas to me. I wanted to know more about everything around me and the world that we lived in. Even the things that other people found mundane or pointless, I loved to understand; simply for the sake of knowing more. Throughout my elementary and middle school years, I was homeschooled which gave me more opportunities to go out and experience things that most kids could not. When I started high school, though, learning became something completely new for me. In my tenth grade year, I began dual enrolling at the local state college where I was immersed in the
During my undergraduate career, I have learn a lot more than what was taught in the classroom. It was an experience that you cannot describe in words; something you can only experience. Luckily, I had environment that encouraged me to explore beyond what a textbook has to over via instructor, counselor or peer. When your challenges are arranged as a journey of learning, surrounded by a supportive environment, the wonders you can learn about the world are endless.
As the years went by I realized the simple need to be able to study and comprehend what I wanted to accomplish. And circumstance played a factor. Once, our push mower broke down and I was assigned the task of fixing our dilemma. Despite my best efforts, my rookie skills weren't enough to better our situation. Even though I failed in reaching my goal, I endeavored to learn the inner workings of a gasoline engine more thoroughly, and I was shocked at how much I didn't know, but especially how much I learned by simply reading a book for five minutes! From then on I aspired to read billboards, road signs, directions and the likes to further my newly fostered art. I was almost more thrilled than my parents! So many unanswered questions were now at the focal
During the 2015-2016 school year, I had the opportunity to be a Resident Advisor in Dunlap-King Hall. My job included safety and security of the building and the residents, conflict management between roommates and residents, planning and implementing hall wide programing events, and community building. While on the job, you must to be the positive example for the residents and be the leader of your hall. If there is a problem in the hall, it is the Resident Advisor's job to help find a solution towards the problem. Solutions can be something from being the mediator between roommates or simply putting in a service request or teach a resident how to put in a service request.
Many people in history, as well as my mentors, have influenced my personal learning philosophy about early childhood learning.
For the month of March I continued to conduct my 3-5 service learning hours at Grace and Love Church. I wanted to make a difference and educate the children on basic health standards. I taught the kids basic health tasks that should be conducted daily including: showering, brushing teeth, and hand washing. As simple as some of the tasks sound, I’m sure there are adults that still struggle to complete the daily health tasks. With my major involving health science, I wanted to share with the children what I am passionate about, health care and educating others. I explained to the children what germs were, and how they are everywhere. I also had a translator for the ones that could not understand English. I taught the children that it is important to shower at least 1-2 times a day to wash away the germs. Shampoo or conditioner along with body wash or soap is also important to maintain a clean body. Washing one’s body daily prevents germs from spreading and prevents infections. Teeth brushing is also very important for daily care. I decided to create miniature teeth care kits
Describe briefly how any idea from the article relates to a specific learning-related event or experience you had last term.
Naturally, my eagerness to learn came about at a very young age. I always wanted to know how the human body worked. Growing up in the age of YouTube, I often poured over countless hours of videos learning simple concepts that I could easily understand at that time. As I grew I was always looking to learn something new. Finally, in high school I took advantage of College Now, a program where students in high school had access to college classes on a college campus while receiving college credits. While I was there, I earned a Certificate in Computer Science from CUNY Queens College. This eagerness to learn came about of a very simple reason. My parents had high aspirations for me since no one on either side of their families had ever gone beyond a high school education. They wanted me to be the first in the family to achieve a Bachelor’s degree. Finally in 2012, I graduated from St. Johns University with a
Throughout my educational experience, I have endured countless hardships that made progress difficult at times. Although it was a struggle through my strong dedication to education, I have also earned a list of achievements for my hard work. These experiences from, failing two of my English classes, to excelling tremendously in mathematics, have molded me into the type of student I am today. I am a student with a growth mindset and, an optimistic outlook on education and, the bright future ahead. I now understand the impact that a positive mindset can have on your future. I am definitely proud of the student I have become. I feel like my journey is unique, but is also very relatable.
Learning takes place not only in the classroom but also in our everyday lives. This is because to learn does not mean just to gain academic knowledge. Rather, learning refers to acquisition of any kind of knowledge that can give us instructions on how we should behave. Information that we get in the classroom is, without any doubt, useful and proven and it can broaden our mind. However, school years are relatively short in terms of a life span, and, therefore, there are a lot more things that can be
As Daniel J. Boorstin said, “Education is learning what you didn 't even know you didn 't know.”
My family, culture, educational, professional experiences have all been positive. The different teachers that I have had; guided me into considering the teaching career for many reasons. First, my family has guided me, my mom and dad have always found the right schools for me. They have pushed me to do hard things that make me scared. They have had faith in the school’s that I chose were the right choices, and they will grow on me. My cultural experience is also a factor of why I want to be a teacher. My schools have been centered on helping students who have learning differences, so I have always been open about having a learning difference to other people. My educational experience has been amazing. It has been positive for me because the schools I have gone to were safe places that I could be myself. The teachers at my schools made a significant impact on me starting at a young age. The professional experience has been limited but beneficial. I worked at Stratford Friends School; I learned it is so much fun to work with children who were just like me. I love the children and school. I get excited about going back to school shopping. I love to dance in the isles, and I love to look at all the beautiful school supplies.
