Learning about my learning styles this week has not only help me learn what the best way and conditions for me to learn are, but I also learned more about myself than I could have ever imagined to learn in a whole year let alone a week. My result for the first quiz, who are you, was “The Advocate” which is commonly known as an INFJ (https://www.16personalities.com/). My specific group is –T (https://www.16personalities.com/). This means that I have an “inborn sense of idealism and morality”, however the dreams that I dream are not always ideal (https://www.16personalities.com/). Continuing deeper into the reading I learned that it is best for me to surround myself with wise and truthful individuals, for I am able to work best with them compared …show more content…
This means that I don’t believe in myself as much as I should, I am very self-conscious, and I am extremely susceptible to stress (https://www.16personalities.com/). With my turbulent and judging traits I am a perfectionist, so I will not turn something in if I don’t think that I did my best (https://www.16personalities.com/). Based on the second and third quiz, the intelligence quiz and the learning style inventory quiz, I found out that I am a linguistic learner at best (http://www.edutopia.org/multiple-intelligences-assessment, http://www.educationplanner.org/students/self-assessments/learning-styles.shtml). Which is commonly known as a visual learner. Being a visual learner means that I find it easier to solve a problem or learn something new if I can visualize and analyze it either mentally or psychically (http://www.edutopia.org/multiple-intelligences-assessment, http://www.educationplanner.org/students/self-assessments/learning-styles.shtml). So, when studying it would be better for me to color code (http://www.edutopia.org/multiple-intelligences-assessment,
Before taking the Learning Style Inventory, I always felt I was mostly a tactile learner. I would be able to learn in a visual fashion if need be, but I would rather learn and by doing and making mistakes. After taking the Learning Style Inventory, the results definitely supported my initial thoughts. My tactile preference was 14 points higher than my auditory score, but only 2 points higher than my visual. Although I believe I will always will be a stronger tactile learner, my visual learner skills have been improving throughout my college learning experience. Plus, it’s important to note that many tactile learning situations are dependent on visual learning. This means that tactilely learning has been strengthening my visual learning skills.
Learning style: My learning style is considered to be auditory and kinesthetic. Yes, I prefer learning through listening and making notes at the same time. Being an auditory learner I depend on hearing and speaking as a main way of learning. I also learn from experiments or activity related to what I study in class.
After taking the learning styles assessment it was found that I am a visual learner most of all followed by tactile and auditory. This meaning that I like to see what I am learning, I am able to understand things and later recall what I have seen. I honestly have to say that I do not agree with these results; I say that because after reading and just knowing how I am, I believe my best type of learning is through tactile, I have been this way since elementary school. When you are a tactile person you like to learn and pick up the information best through touching and doing things, you are very hands-on. Versus someone who is a visual learner just needs to see it or read it. Some of the characteristics a tactile person has is completely me; such as I am always doing something, I like to be hands on, when I talk I move my hands sort of like I am trying to act out what I am saying, I always have my legs going or am swaying side to side, like flashcards to study with, and am always chewing gum.
In the learning styles test, it resulted that I am a visual learner. I believe that this is true because I would rather to see a demonstration of what I am supposed to do so I can be able to do it by myself later on. It is effective for me when I am studying because I can remember what I saw as opposed to what I heard. Also, I get distracted easily therefore if a class session tends to be long and only involves discussions and talking, I tend to space out a lot. The results says that visual learners should always be sure to look at the study materials and make use of flash cards, which I tend to do all the time. In the value assessment section, I did the Rokeach Value Survey and this was a great one. It helped to prioritize terminal and instrumental
Your child/student took a “Learning Styles Inventory” last week to determine how they learn best. They discovered that they were a visual, an auditory, or a kinesthetic learner.
In the article “The Myth of Learning Styles,” authors Cedar Riener and Daniel Willingham (2010) question whether learning styles actually effectively play a role in a student’s learning. They begin by defining what a learning style is, which is explain as how a student best learns from the information they receive, and currently learning styles are most commonly described through sensory, such as visual, auditory, or kinesthetic learning styles (Riener & Willingham, 2010). Riener and Willingham (2010) argue that there are no learning styles, but rather that learning depends on a student’s prior knowledge, background, and interests. They address this by providing three myths of learning styles, one myth that is correct and two that are not.
I am writing this memo to share the results of my learning styles assessment, see attachments, and to discuss possible ways I can better learn knowing this information.
Although I have the same percentage for 5 of the 7 learning styles, I’ve selected the two I know are my style. My two styles would be verbal and visual. Verbal because I enjoy re-reading and reading out loud my responses to all of my writings. I feel that way I get more of an understanding as to what the reader will grasp. Visual because in order for me to retain as much information as i can, visual depiction is perfect, that is not to say however, that auditory learning doesn't do this for me as well. When it pertains to challenges, because one of my learning styles is visual, I had to think long and hard about taking college courses online. I was so used to the idea of having an instructor in front of me, directing a class and writing on a dry erase/chalkboard. Although I was used to that idea, I am grateful of the opportunity of having online courses, especially when going to work full-time and having a family. I know that following my heart and going to school online was my the best decision. I actually don't see a challenge of being verbal. I believe everyone uses this tactic daily, based on the fact they pick up what they hear and see. Being visual, I can use the internet to help me understand more clearly, whereas being verbal, I would be able to excel at online
Most people learn in different ways and are still trying to learn what type of methods that they prefer. After completing the learning style quiz, it concludes that I am a visualized learner. Therefore, I would have to agree with these results based on this last semester of college being all online. For that purpose, I have adjusted to an all online learning experience, which was not an easy task. For example, one of the most beneficial learning methods that I have relied as an online student would have to be the availability of watching videos to help expand my learning.
Learning how to take lecture notes effectively is important to successfully conclusion of the education process. Experience has taught me the importance of good study skills and habits. Not only can a student “survive” college with these skills but also life and do well. Good note taking skills are the best way to trigger the memory to recall facts.
Furthermore, according to these inventories, I have concluded that I am an audio and visual learner. This is apparent in both the ways I learn and teach. In trying to
I am a caring student. When I see someone who is sad or crying I try and walk over to help even when they may not want it. If they are good enough I will leave them alone and respect their wishes but if they need serious help I will find it for them.
The experience we have of a course determines the amount of information we get out of it. While many of us have had a bad experience in a course, we may have just chalked it up to the material being too difficult; while that may have been the reason, the more likely reason is that your learning style did not match the teaching style of your professor. We all learn and think in different ways and my experience a vast difference in learning and teaching style can ruin the experience you have in a course. After taking a learning style survey and seeing somewhat different results than what I had expected to see, I had to take a step back and reevaluate the way I thought I learned.
What is a learning style? Well a learning style is the way a person tends to learn best. It involves your preferred method of taking in, organizing, and making sense of information, Lake Washington Institute of Technology (2012). Some people prefer to learn by doing and touching, others prefer to learn by seeing, or by hearing the information. Still others learn using more than one learning style. If a person was interested in finding out what their particular learning style is would be to take the VARK questionnaire for learning styles. The most common learning style is the multimodal, but the learner
“Different strokes for different folks” Everyone has their own way of approaching life. As early as Ancient Greece, Plato, Aristotle and Hippocrates recorded theories on personality (Ellis, 2009). Some educators are seeing students benefiting by incorporating Learning Style and Multiple Intelligence theories in the classroom. By applying various learning styles and Multiple Intelligence theories in education, students are more likely to be motivated to learn at a deeper level.
