Peter uses a great format for his resume. He has clear headings for each section, and he uses reverse-chronological order to list his education and experience. He uses bullet points to list the job responsibilities for each position, and he starts off each bullet point with an action verb.

This reflective memo has been composed to discuss my experience with developing a new resume using the information I’ve learned in a Professional Writing course. With this assignment, I was encouraged to explore beyond my comfort zone, and as a result I located a job I may actually consider applying too. While the position in sales is a bit out of my reach currently, the only obstacle is the distance as the company is located in Texas. While I was establishing a resume and cover letter tailored to this job add, I found myself trying to write in a more professional way to create a document I would be proud to have over to an employer. Justin Pecaut was extremely helpful in guiding the class how to succeed during and after graduation. He spoke about several different topics such as salary negotiation, resume building, interviewing skills, and his experience working in compensation.

Today, Carrie Hachadurian spoke with the honors college students regarding career and professional development resources available at Western Carolina University. Carrie is the student development coordinator here on campus. Initially, her job is to bring forth the available resources to students such as, student employment, interview preparation, resume builder guide, internships, and much more. Such resources can assist students in identifying a major and their career path based off of tests that focus on personality. I grew up in California where both of my parents were involved with gangs and drugs by the time they were in middle school. They grew up like this, getting involved with the wrong people, getting into fights for dumb reasons, even getting in trouble with the authorities. Of course, that was normal for them because they were surrounded by it through friends and family. They continued to live that life style even when they met each other at the ages of 18 and 23. They didn't like each other at first, but they eventually started dating. My mom ended up getting pregnant later that year and tried to take a break from all of it, but my dad didn't stop and that caused some tension and arguing between them.

I gained some insight from the articles, “Common Resume Mistakes”, “How to Answer Tricky Interview Questions”, and “Leaving Your Job? Do It With Class”. I learned from “Common Resume Mistakes”, that it is important to keep one’s resume succinct and detailed. A resume should require all the information of one’s professional life without making it unnecessarily long or revealing. From “How to Answer Tricky Interview Questions”, I learned before going into an interview, the interviewee must prepare themselves by writing out answers to interview questions and practicing them out loud. The main reason for attending university is to earn a degree and start a career that will create a successful future for the student. Throughout her book titled “Resumes for Dummies” (herein known as “the book”) she repeatedly demonstrated comprehensive industry-knowledge with respect to resume writing. Her in-depth comprehension covered a broad range of topics such as: how to manage the digital age, screening and search tools, appropriate formatting, as well as managing and positioning resume content, among many others. Furthermore, she focused on many contemporary issues, which are encountered by both job seekers and resume writers alike. These difficulties have unquestionably disrupted the environment of the profession in recent years. Nonetheless, there were three specific similarities found in her book that distinctly comply with the guidelines of the National Resume Writers’ Association (NRWA).

I really enjoyed our lecture today by Esperanza Gonzalez. I definitely feel more prepared to write my resume. I have a clearer understanding of what an employer will be looking for. I now know that my resume should be no longer than two pages. Ms. Gonzalez outlined the important components to include and the essential topics to cover. I was a little surprised to learn that I will need six references. Ms. Gonzalez gave several examples to show how I can make my resume unique. I really like that she explained formatting and font selection. I was excited to learn that Ms. Gonzalez is willing to review your resume and provide feedback. I will definitely take advantage of this resource.

The resume should be up to date. It should chronicle your experiences from high school until the present. It should be presented in a professional and complete manner. If you need help writing or refining a resume, you can ask your college’s career services department.

This was a mock resumé that I created in my 12th grade AP english class. The resumé was used as a practice for when we need to create them for professional jobs later in life. We were asked to create a resumé in a standard format and include information about ourselves that would make a potential hiring manager want to pick us. I highlighted all of my achievements and my academic successes, as well as including my interests and contact information.
