The first question my peers ask when they find I am in school is why. However, younger people think it is wonderful that at 78 I have returned to school. At this point, I am going to rewind a bit, O.K., a lot, to give you a better understanding about the driven Barbara. My parents instilled in me that I could accomplish anything that I set my mind to accomplish. I am egotistical, have a high sense of self-esteem and prove any statements that I make with facts. This again was due to my parents who told me, if you argue a point, make sure you have the facts to prove what you say is true.
My career has been a mixture of business, the arts and education. I am now a retired educator tutoring 5th graders at a Boys and Girls Club. However, I am appalled that students in fifth grade, cannot write, spell, solves fractions, still counting on their fingers, and lack skills they should have as a fifth grader. The first fifth grade I tutored knew zilch about math and grammar. I chalked this up to a bad teacher until I found out that out of the twenty in my class, only two or three attended the same school and none was in the same classroom.
The following two years were the same. Every class I taught lacked important skills needed to excel in math and language arts. In addition, tutors teaching other experienced the same problems with the classes they tutored.
In my lifetime, I have had wonderful, interesting jobs like the library that allowed me to read voraciously and experience
Both Miles Franklin and E.M. Forster implement romantic humanist values throughout their novels to highlight the difficulties facing Victorian women in love.
The past decade has been hard on teachers, especially in 2002, when President George W. Bush’s No Child Left Behind went into effect. This brought about yearly testing from 3rd grade to 8th grade. If every child was not “proficient” and was “left behind” by the the education system then the school would be subject to sanctions. The worst
Many states across the country are experiencing teacher shortages. Without enough teachers, we can not successfully educate our children. According to Glori Chaika “Forty-two states issue emergency credentials to people who have taken no education courses and have not taught a day in their lives. Many teachers are hired based solely on their experience leading church or camping groups.” (Chaika) Due to the shortages, States are allowing those who are not even qualified to teach. One can not believe that children are being educated as best as they can be, if those teaching them have no experience or training before hand. Another problem is that teachers are not being place in the fields were they can perform at their best, Glori Chaika also states that “One-fourth of new teachers -- if they are licensed -- are not licensed to teach in the field they are teaching.” (Chaika) Many teachers have very little knowledge on the subject they are teaching, “About 55 percent of students taking physics in the United States, for example, are taught by someone who never majored or minored in the subject.” ( Asimov) As a result of the current teacher shortage, the quality of America’s educational system has gone down. People are being hired with no teaching experience and teachers are being forced to teacher subjects that they are not familiar with. Adding to the current teacher shortage is the problem of teacher
Twenty years ago, I took a job while in high school at my local library. Working at the library helped me become a better reader. As a Special Ed student I struggled with reading. But, working in the library I found a new passion for reading; having those books in my hands forced me to open
Due to last minute changes by my career shadowing person, I ended up following my dad around his work. It was quite an interesting experience. I didn’t think being the manager of a small healthcare company had so much walking and communication required. I always view CEOs as people that sit behind a desk and make their co-workers do everything. But really it was completely the opposite. Not saying that the co-workers did nothing but the manager does quite a lot. The manager oversees everything while also talking to the patients who are in need of care, they compromise with their co-workers daily and thinking critically of how to overcome obstacles that are affecting their companies to keep it going. They also set guidelines of what should
After many years in the classroom and several as a facilitator, there were many situations that I have observed and or been a part of that did not make me happy I found myself saying what I would have said or done if I was the principal of the school. My heart began to break for those students that were in classes with teachers that did not seem to really care about whether or not the students actually got it but more so doing the bare minimum to say that the skill had been taught. I saw children struggle. I saw children and parents with hurt feelings and then angered by the way a teacher had treated or talked to them. I even saw some teachers that just did not care. I wanted that to change. For years I put off going back to school. I got my Masters in Education right after I
It was an early summer day just after my eighth grade year when I made a decision that would significantly impact my high school career. I was working alongside my mother and father on the registration for my freshman year of highschool when I came across blank that asked if I would like to play a sport. For the past three years I had been playing volleyball, and though a successful and talented players, as I imagined my future self, I could not see myself on the court. I have a rather annoying habit of falling in and out of hobbies and interest, I like to consider myself a jack of all trades. Knowing I wanted to play a sport I asked my father if he had any recommendations. He told me that, “in his years as a businessman he had always regretted
This is a multidimensional issue that will only be corrected through furthering teacher education, and allowing teachers to better understand what the issues are and how they can help be part of the solution (Pfeiffer, 2012.; Callahan et al,
While registering for the semester I noticed this course and thought it would be very beneficial for both my personal and professional lives. I felt I was in need of learning new techniques and regimes to reduce stress, increase productivity, and learn to efficiently and effectively relax in order to improve my communication. I mean who wouldn’t want to learn how to relax and receive credit hours at the same time. With that being said I immediately signed up, and for once I was excited opposed to being nervous of the unexpected like I was for previous courses I have taken. Another perk to this class was seeing that Professor Mantel was the instructor. I had taken one of her workshop previously (Humor in Communication), and not only did I learn several beneficial ways to communicate through humor, but the workshop was very interesting and entertaining.
My personal mission statement is as follows: To be a positive and influential person in society while still being myself at all times.
Beginning the writing process, I established for myself a mental roadmap. I asked myself what I was trying to say, and what the goal or intent of the writing would be. Was I attempting to persuade my readers, or to be didactic instead? I considered the "how" part of the equation later, and honed each sentence word for word. The how part of the writing process was relatively simple compared to the question of what to say, and why. I had to imbue the paper with social commentary, for there was much to say about these readings.
"The judge has made his decision, the accused has been found guilty." These are the words that one day I will finally hear. My future goal is to be a lawyer. A lawyer is a professional person authorized to practice law. They defend or prosecute people for the crimes they have committed. (dictionary.com) I am very out spoken and believe in fighting for what I want or think is right.
This year when I did my observation in a classroom, and in my field experience class I learned that some teachers will not teach some
In the first year of teaching, four out of ten teachers quit. An educators job is not a walk in the park. In Kansas, we are facing a shortage of teachers. The most areas that are facing these shortages are Special Education, Adaptive and Functional Special Education, Early Childhood Handicapped, and hearing and visual impaired. It has been reported that Fewer students have chosen to major in education. There are many reasons that are causing the shortages, lack of
