At 18, I was your average high school student. I participated in marching band, took a few advanced courses and enjoyed the fellowship of friends. A blooming teenager with high hopes of attending the University of Alabama at Birmingham to obtain my degree in nursing. However, the summer following my graduation, I discovered that I was pregnant. Understandably shocked by this unexpected circumstance, I placed my dreams of attending UAB on hold. When I became pregnant, I was labeled a statistic, another teenage mother. Statistically, they said I was not going to complete my college degree by the age of thirty. My daughter didn’t see her mother all the time. I spent numerous nights studying for exams, riding to clinical, sleeping from pure exhaustion. I completed my associate's degree in nursing in 2014 and began working in a Medical-Surgical oncology unit, which I am still employed to this day. I came across numerous patients without proper access to health care, often being readmitted, not due to faults of their own but lack of education and resources. I realized that my strengths and passion laid in primary care and transforming the obstacles faced by health care providers and patients in rural areas. The role of the Family Nurse Practitioner is ever evolving, assuming a variety of roles such as primary care provider, educator, leader and researcher. Becoming a nurse practitioner will allow me to broaden my scope of practice while still applying the basic principles of nursing to patient care. I will be able to partner with my patients, in collaboration with other healthcare providers, at each phase of their development, promoting optimal health and disease prevention while allowing me to better serve my community locally and
