The role of a family nurse practitioner is a fundamental portion of the future of healthcare. The role is clearly not as understood by other healthcare professionals as needed which results in the disagreement if the role of a family nurse practitioner is even required for primary care. As people are getting older, the need for medical professionals that can provide patient care to our ever growing population increases. The need for the role of family nurse practitioners will grow too. The role of the family nurse practitioner, the ability of the FNP to be able to transition into their role.

Disease prevention is crucial to the future because there are so many diseases that are preventable, some patients just need the information to understand. I feel that there are so many people that need primary care providers and there are not enough physicians available for the growing number of patients. Nurse Practitioners are able to help bridge the gap for the shortage of health care providers. I am eager to start the Family Nurse Practitioner Program to help with this shortage.

Samantha stated that initially many people asked her if she chose to be a family nurse practitioner to be a “mini physician” (S. Hage De Reyes, personal communication, June 22, 2016). In her perspective, it has been an issue to show others in health care professions that nurses just want to expand their knowledge. She “fights battles every day” for her patients because of the holes in our health care system (S. Hage De Reyes, personal communication, June 22, 2016). In her experience, she has seen many individuals without insurance. She has learned that being a family nurse practitioner is being an advocate for the patient and helping them get the resources that they need. Family nurse practitioners help provide care in a more affordable way. In Samantha’s opinion, family nurse practitioners are the answer to creating access to care for the large uninsured population and those that are newly insured under the Affordable Care Act, and I could not agree

Although I enjoy all facets of nursing, I truly believe that it is in the field of family practice that the foundation of the nursing process begins. I have seen many patients over the course of my career without a stable, primary care healthcare provider. Health and wellness begins with day-to-day habits, and a nurse in family care is uniquely poised to give wellness advice and guidance. Family nurse practitioners often perform similar functions to physicians: making diagnoses; prescribing tests and medications; and helping patients over the course of their life trajectories lead more fulfilling lives. There is a growing trend where physicians are choosing different specialties instead of choosing primary care, primarily due to the low reimbursement rate in primary care. According to Iglehart (2014),” the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) still projects a shortage of 130,000 physicians by 2025, split almost equally between primary and specialty care” (para. 1). With this decline comes an answer, an increase in the number of nurse practitioners providing patient care, reported 154,00 in 2012 and growing every year (Iglehart, 2014). This increase in nurse practitioners’ helps fill that gap, allow greater health care access to the community, especially special populations. Completing my bachelor’s degree in Nursing has been a personal goal of mine since I graduated with my associate’s degree in nursing. Having my BSN degree is essential for my career and personal development. Initially after graduating with my ASN, I enrolled in a BSN program and started my first class, when life happened. I was a single mother raising my 5 year old daughter, working the night shifts at Miami Children’s Hospital. I was dating my now husband and became pregnant with my second child. I ended up having to quit my job as a pediatric nurse which was my goal, to be a pediatric nurse, get my BSN and climb the ladder there. After the birth of my daughter my personal goals changed, and my academic and career goals were put on hold.

As health care continues to evolve, these changes may facilitate or hinder the availability of health care resources for lower income populations. According to the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (2017), “By providing high-quality care and counseling, NPs can lower the cost of health care for patients” .Moreover, practicing at the primary care level, and focusing on prevention, counseling, and screening will help decrease the prevalence of inpatient hospitalizations due to people not understanding their health. As an FNP in primary health care setting, I will have the ability to see my patients for wellness visits, and reinforce the routine knowledge needed for them to make ideal life style choices, that will maintain their good health. A recent study looking on how the nurse practitioner (NP) workforce is projected to grow projected a 130% by the year 2025 (Auerbach, 2012). I believe this increase is in preparation for the rising age of our nation’s population and for the demand of quality health care delivery in the primary care setting. Ever since I began nursing school in 2012 at the University of Texas At El Paso Texas, I dreamt of furthering my education to become a Family Nurse Practitioner. During my clinical rotations I received many exposures that showed me insight into the invaluable job Nurse Practitioners offered to their patients. Through my own personal experience having received care by nurse Practitioners has left me no doubt about my desire to become a Family Nurse Practitioner.

Thank you for conducting information session for internationally educated nurses at York. It is my pleasure to attend the session. At present, I am a Registered Nurse in Texas United States and in Nepal. I have completed NCLEX and jurisprudence examination of RN in Ontario. After the introduction of NCLEX in Canada in January 2015, I had a strong hope that CNO would recognize my education as equivalent to Canadian RN but they did not. Decision of CNO made me disappoint. But I could not leave my passion for nursing after serving many years in my profession. Then I decided to upgrade my education.

Historically, nurses focused on the diagnosis and treatment of a disease, sickness or condition and emphasis on health promotion was nonexistent. However, today that has all changed. Nurses are now expected to expand their primary care services to include psychosocial nursing, advocacy, behavioral science, counseling and advocacy in addition to patient assessment, clinical diagnosis and patient-case management. In the article “Defining Nurse Practitioner Scope of Practice: Expanding Primary Care Services,” Sherwood, Brown, and Wardell (1997) state “the role of the nurse practitioner continues to evolve in response to changing societal and health care needs as consumers in all settings seek increasing services”. (Sherwood, Brown and Wardell, 1997).
