My Social Change Model

For my social change model, I choose the implementation of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell (DADT) in 1993 for the U.S. Armed Forces by former President Bill Clinton. What this directive accomplished was protection for active homosexuals already serving or wishing to serve in the U.S. Armed Forces. In the simplest terms, this allowed service if you did not tell and you could not legally ask service personnel their sexual orientation. (There is more to DADT than this, my space is limited). (Encyclopedia Britannica, events). This was finally repealed in 2011 by President Barak Obama allowing homosexuals to openly serve.

1) At the top of the diagram, we have a new idea or policy, that is created by the public or leadership. 1a) This new idea is then introduced to the public either as a suggestion or mandate. The example is used in my social change model in the introduction of DADT (DOD Directive 1304.26) The light blue arrow indicated the idea or policy to be a directive in nature, from this point the path can …show more content…

At any time, they can decide to discontinue the idea reworking making it more suitable for the group or wait till the time is right.

The graphics I used in the model of social change are straightforward. The red arrows represent the synergy of the ideas/factors and how they feed off each other, helping or hampering the ideas success or failure.

The Lightning bolts represent the interference and encouragement from informal and formal leadership or personal experiences helping or hindering the idea to become accepted. Finally, at the last portion of the social change model I have a light blue arrow with an exclamation point representing a new idea to be implemented again, starting the process over again. The end of these paths demonstrated the cyclical nature of my social change model, and how I view society. (Rifts and Shifts Plenary
