English classes are fundamental to a child’s educational growth. My past English classes have developed me into the student and writer I am today. My most recent English class, however, has made the most substantial impact in my academic career. In my eleventh grade English III class I learned not only the rules of proper citation, but also my strengths and weaknesses as a writer.
Previous to my junior year in high school, my English classes spent minimal time writing papers where citing information from a text was required. As a result, I had much to learn going into my English III class. I went from writing simple narratives to complex research papers. This elevation in writing resulted in me having to learn the rules of citation. Mrs. Bingham, my eleventh grade English teacher, assigned a research paper that required in-text citations. In order to give the publishers of certain books and articles credit for the work they had done, I had to create a works cited page. This works cited page reflected the work of other authors that I put into my research paper. I learned that when creating a works cited page,

Through grading my papers, Mrs. Bingham was able to identify the areas in which I needed to improve my writing. At the forefront of these improvements was my incorrect use of pronoun antecedent agreement. In my papers, the antecedent would not match the pronoun it was referring to, thus leaving my sentences without clear meaning. Along with incorrect pronoun antecedent agreement, I discovered that I repeated ideas and opinions in my papers. This restating of the same information, not only resulted in a low grade, but also pointed to my inability to find more information to discuss. Although my English III class brought to my attention the weaker points of my writing, I was ultimately able to grow from this constructive criticism into a better
The art of writing is a complex and difficult process. Proper writing requires careful planning, revision, and proofreading. Throughout the past semester, the quality of my writing has evolved significantly. At first, I struggled with the separation of different types of paragraphs, and I found writing them laborious. Constant practice, however, has eliminated many of my original difficulties, and helped to inspire confidence in my skills. As a collegiate writer, my strength lies in my clear understanding of the fundamentals of writing, while my primary weakness is proofreading my own work.
The primary aim of English 1101 is to prepare the student to effectively communicate, and identify or create new knowledge in various spheres of life. English 1101 assisted me to have control over the writing conventions through extensive writing practice or reading, guided by evaluations and feedbacks from my course instructor. The course contains several topics namely; effective writing processes, rhetorical organizations methods, academic writing formats and styles, critical reading skills, researching, and citing the researched sources.
Throughout the course of this semester in AP Lang, my eyes have been opened to many of the weaknesses I never knew I had in writing. Coming into this semester, I had heard about the difficulty of this class, but was not unduly worried about not receiving an A; I have always considered myself as a competent if not strong writer. However, after failing to attain desired grades on several important essays, I was devastated, and realized that although I had mastered the basics of grammar and writing, there was still much for me to work on. Also, I did not understand that much of my grade in AP Lang would be determined by speaking in front of others, which is not my strong suit. What I have come to find is that writing essays containing all of the new information we have learned throughout the semester, such as requirements for different types of essays and good writing strategies, takes a lot of work, time, and thinking. Unfortunately, my procrastination caused me to only get done what had to be done instead of putting in the extra work and truly understanding everything.
I’ve always struggled with trying to stay focused on my school work. While it may not look like it on the outside, it is a constant struggle in the inside. My mind is like a jungle gym with a bunch of kids zooming around. Sometimes I would just stare at the screen of my computer hoping the words would just appear themselves, but if that ever happened I probably wouldn’t even be here. My brain has these switches in them to tell me to do something else like play a game on your tablet or watch Netflix right when I am writing my essay. It’s how my brain works, and there never seems to be a manual switch because it’s automatic. My lack of focus caused me to face many obstacles, but through my weaknesses I discovered some of my greatest
As the semester approaches a conclusion, I have discovered for myself that I happen to exhibit not simply on how I have endured this semester, but then again also what I have gained in knowledge of. In the past four months, I would consider that I obtain an accomplishment of achievement in improving my writing techniques. The most important principle that I have discovered so far ensues on how to become an improved writer. With each writing assignment, I learned additional methods and skills, which tweaked my capabilities to develop my thoughts in detail on paper, to write clearly, and to organize my essays efficiently. In previous years, I would frequently catch myself irritated believing I had terrible writer’s block standing in my path of writing an organized essay. This created a feeling as if I could not distinguish how to write properly and the reasoning behind my hatred for writing. During high school, I learned the Modern Language Association (MLA) formats for bibliographies and parenthetical citations, consequently at the beginning of the fall semester, I knew only this format. I was able to learned the correct format for the American Psychological Association (APA) style when doing each assignment at hand.
At 11:15 on Monday, August 17, 2015, my first official college class, English 1101, began. In general, I had no idea what college classes would be like let alone how college English would be. Even though this class taught me a great deal in one semester, it took a large amount of time and effort to make the adjustment from high school. The simplistic writing style of high school was put to rest the moment the first college English class began. As a result, I learned quickly that college writing is complex and less systematic than high school writing. Five paragraph essays with three strict body paragraphs were no longer the norm for writing. Even though my professor helped guide my writing, I was no longer coddled through the whole writing
There are many changes needed in high school’s English classes across the country to prepare students for college writing classes. The high school teachers need to start preparing their students for college level work from their freshman year in high school. However, they do not need to teach the things they already know otherwise they will have difficulties in college. In college students have hard times understanding the material because they understand something different then what their professor wants them to understand. There are many changes my former high school need to make versus my high school. The changes my former high school English classes needs to make are the vocabulary, sentence structure, and the important of Citation.
I have created multiple PowerPoint presentations before. The most recent one was for Learning and Serving last semester. Creating PowerPoint is one of my favorite ways to do for any presentation that I give. I find it easy to use, and a good aid when giving a speech.
My middle school writing career, I would say was pretty successful. I’ve written about many things, but my favorites were when I wrote narratives preferably fictional, these are always the best to write about, because it sparks up creativity and it gets the reader really interested into the stories. I like reading these sort of stories and that’s where I get a lot of my ideas from. I think in writing my strengths are creativity, punctuation, and attention to audience. My weaknesses are the process of starting a writing (analysis and argument) because at first I’m always doubting myself about what I wrote, but after I get the hang of it, it becomes easier and I can write it more smoothly.
Over the year I have made a tremendous amount of progress as a writer. I have improved my grammar and reduced the amount of run-on sentences in my writings. Throughout the year my writings have made a lot of improvement and my grades throughout the year reflect this well. In the beginning of the year my writings were very choppy or unorganized and didn’t flow very well but now they have structure and are very detailed. I have gone from getting an h5 on my first writing to a h8-9. This year, I have learned to make corrections, do extra research, and take time on my writings or essays. My writings this year show my strengths, weaknesses, growth and made me set goals for next year.
When I entered your classroom on the first day of school this year, I was confident that what I had learned in previous years was sufficient enough to call myself an experienced and competent writer. However, I discovered throughout the semester that this confidence hindered my ability to improve in the beginning. The first few days of analyzing essays and literary works was something I had never experienced before, opening up my eyes to a side of literature and the English language that I previously did not pay any attention to. After we finished writing our very first in-class essay, I was extremely surprised to see that the score I earned was a 6. But when I look back on that very first essay, I am even more surprised to see what I could improve using the knowledge and strategies I learned in AP Junior English.
Within the English III class, my former experience in creative writing and affinity for classical styles of literature shall more than likely provide the ability for growth within the classroom. As a person who values differing perspectives, my ultimate goal is to obtain a variety of perspectives involving those in the course, as well as the literary discussions relating to real world social perspectives and morality. As a student I am aware of the need to make great efforts in not only becoming involved with the material, but learning to understand and analyze various styles of writing and grammar. despite my lack of experience in English college courses, it will be the strides I make both inside and outside of the classroom that leave a
My biggest weakness as a writer is sentence structure. I used to write simple sentences in my writing with little complex sentences. My peer and instructor had pointed out this problem to me; therefore, I realize the problem is worse in academic writing. To tackle this problem in my next academic writing assignment, I planned to read more academic essay which helps me to know how to write complex sentences for academic
As a writer, I feel that my weakness is struggling with time management and trying to get my best draft as my first draft. I have always struggled with trying to put forth the best draft on the first one and just making little adjustments and then turning the paper in. Another weakness I have is to over complicate my writing and over think submitting the final draft. Every single essay that I have had to write throughout this semester I have struggled with these problems. Particularly the research paper, since the paper was worth such a big percentage of the grade in the class. I was extremely self-conscious about submitting and writing the paper. I took a long time just to finish a rough draft. I reviewed the final draft for hours before submitting the paper. I also experienced the problem of being extremely self-conscious after I submitted the paper and question everything I choose to write on.
Writing is a skill that takes time to develop. Knowing your strengths and weaknesses is very important. Being aware of your strengths can help you stand out, and your weaknesses show you areas where improvement is needed. Like everybody I have weaknesses as well as strengths, and being conscious of them helped me improve my writing skills.
