I grew up in a extremely small town outside of Birmingham, and the high school I went to is not known for its academia. If I recall right, my high school english classes assigned only 1-2 papers a year, so writing 4-5 in a semester was a completely new adventure for me. I learned many things in this course that greatly helped me improve my writing. My writing overall improved in style, flow, and basic fundamental writing thought processes, which is all the areas that are hard to learn. I started to see my style and flow had grown bland and very fact based instead of grabbing the attention of the readers. Now that I understand where my writing needs improvement, I can start focusing on those areas and fixing my papers.
One of my weaknesses in my writing is that I tend to have a “one track mind”. Once I have an idea about how to word something or organize an essay, I tend to only see it from that perspective, even if it’s not the most optimal way to convey my arguments. This class helped me think outside of the box and learn to organize things like I would not normally do, this included how I would analyze texts or synthesize ideas. The in-class activities helped me learn to be creative, the class readings gave me examples on how to organize that creativity and the instructor conferences helped me further organize my thoughts and organization.

Although the most subjective and probably the hardest of our assignments, the argument proposal was easier for me to write about since I was generally curious about the topic. Writing an argumentative essay can help students improve their writing, develop their critical-thinking skills, and also learn how to perform research. One of my weaknesses with my argument proposal was relying too much on evidence and synthesizing ideas instead of generating my own or making a definite stance, instead of trying new ways to be creative and capture the attention of the
I have been writing papers for a long time, but I am by no means the best writer I can be. To unleash my full potential as a writer, I have to review all my old writings. I have to analyze my past writing style so that I can see if there is anything I can do differently. Overall, the creation process of my papers can be better. Maybe taking a look at who I am as a writer will help me improve.
When this semester first started I did not enjoy writing, the process, the grading, and just writing itself. I did not consider myself a good writer, but I knew that I was decent. Most of my papers were decent and I received average and above average grades on them. Even though I received good grades I still did not find myself a good writer. When entering this class, WRTG 120, I was afraid that it would be my hardest class and that I would have a hard time. In other words I was scared, and hearing the writing outcomes for this course did not help. I have heard of most of the outcomes but being able to write using them in writing I knew was going to be hard. In this paper I am going to talk about how I used the five out comes
When beginning any writing assignment, it can be a rocky start. It involves critical thinking and applying to your writing. First, you have to be skilled and be prepared in writing to get where you want to be. Therefore, my writing was complicated until I got into writing better than before. There comes a time when you have to start from scratch and work until you earn what you deserved. It was complicated to figure out what to write about, and to be precise. At first, I had adequate writing skills, but as I progressed through middle and high school, I have made vast improvements in my writing.
Each small scenarios that happen in our live can have either a major or minor impact on them. For me, it had a major impact. The way I go about writing now is more clear. I put more thought into my thinking process first. Before I decide what I want to write about I make a list. The top part of my list are the things that are either important to me or just easy to talk about, as long as it stands true to the topic or prompt. This is important because beforehand I just picked something and wrote the bare minimum I needed to have to get an A or B in high school ,which is not very hard with certain teachers. From changing this one step my whole writing process became easier. This scenario, did start off very damaging. My attitude towards
Throughout my high school career, I've learned a few things about myself and how I write formal and informal literature. one of the things I've learned was that, I write better papers when I have a strict guideline on how the paper should be formatted. A big issue I face when writing a paper without guidelines is, when I begin to type the essay, i have no structure to build off of. Being that structure is very important to me, another element that I must account for before starting an assignment is an outline. The outline assures me that I will not experience writers block while i’m in the stages of crafting my first draft. when it comes to different forms of writing, one particularly area I struggle in is analysis essays. the reason
To write my adventure book, I went through all the stages of writing process both in and outside of class to create a book I am proud of. The writing process involves many steps like prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and finally publishing and sharing. For the prewriting stage, we were brainstorming monster characters and the adventures they would go on for a lesson in class and this is where the idea of my adventure book was created. For the drafting stage, I would work on the draft of my story inside and outside of class. When working on my rough draft, I would go back and add more figurative language such as alliterations and onomatopoeias in my story.
Throughout middle school my classes were all the same, I showed up, learned, received my assignments, and left. There was one class that was different; it was my Language Arts class. The teacher’s name was Mrs. Lorentsen and she was not the average teacher. For example, in her class we rarely had lectures and I can remember vividly my adventures with her. We completed assignments that were called Independent Study Projects (ISPs), Common Place Books (CPBs), and completed 3D book reports. These are all different ways of presenting information through creativity and problem solving. These foreign type assignments seemed strange at first, as they are different from a traditional classroom setting. I quickly adjusted to her classroom, and learned that I enjoyed this style of learning. Throughout the class Mrs. Lorentsen and I both noticed a commonality in my writing. Putting my thoughts and opinions on paper became a struggle for me.
I have never thought of myself as a writer as I have never felt the urge to write. I consider myself competent at writing only because of content I was forced to cover during my twelve years of schooling. However, being forced to write does not make someone a writer; it makes him or her slave to meeting requirements of a peer who wishes to see an answer in written form, with no care or concern for journey the author actually went through. So the question should be, how have I become the writer I am today?
Toward the begin of this class I made an objective to build up my composition aptitudes to better set me up for different courses for my degree, at the end of the day, to have the capacity to finish meets expectations that would demonstrate my capacity to participate in a scholastic talk. I knew the course would be diverse contrasted with whatever other English or school courses that I have taken. I knew English 106 environment would give me a chance to develop in different written work measurements. This course manages me with a few methods that have made written work a smidgen simpler, as well as all the more top to bottom bringing about a more elevated amount of scholastic composition versus my typical military style composing. Presently
It was a miracle that i got through that those essays and the class. My sophomore year came around and so did english 2, i was prepared to dread that class more than anything else. I remember feeling uneasy when getting an introduction to the first written assignment. It was noticeable that the teacher was motivated to get familiar with a new type of outline the english department had came up with since it seemed like the one before was of no support to us students. The outline seemed bearable at first glanced but at the back of my head, the question of “how do i put my thoughts into words” still remained a mystery. I was aware that for my writing to improve, my way of organizing my thoughts in words had to improve too. The teacher used the outline and showed us how to write a proper essay including how to phrase our thoughts in the direction of our writing. In that class i had an awakening and was enlighten to what was the begining to my first real writing. I remembered writing that first assignment with interest and comprehension. My thoughts formulated its way into my writing. My writing constructed into a well written essay about the universal idea of the book ‘Of Mice and
My bracelet sits under my bed, so that I will not lose it. It sits in a box with all of the other things my brother has gotten me over the past couple years. Most people find it weird that I keep the stuff my brother gave me in a box but most people do not have to worry about there brother bring a Marine.
For my third writing assignment, I decided to attend the Writing Center for the first time. The Writing Center is at the O’Leary library in the third floor. You should do an appointment for a secure spot, but you can go and if they have availability when you go and you can they’ll set you up with someone. When I went in the Writing Center there was a student working there and I told her that I wanted someone to view my Book Report for my Politics class. I went to the Writing Center with the hope that someone will see me right away, and indeed there was space. An English teacher, that showed up told the student helping me that there was one person that could see me right away and help me. I liked that they could help me right away, even though
I’ll be honest, I was not looking forward to taking College Writing I. That’s probably why I waited until my junior year to take this course. I absolutely hate writing papers and after 4 semesters of writing lab reports for my chemistry classes like organic chemistry and general chemistry, I didn’t see why I had to take this class. I already took English classes for four years in high school. However, I’m grateful that I took this class and that I will be taking College Writing II next semester. I believe that I’ve grown as a writer and I can’t wait to learn more in College Writing II.
This cover letter aimed to describe what I learned in the Academic Writing class (ENGL 4893). In addition, to highlight the assignments I wrote as practice for the academic research writing in my scientific field. Academic writing might define as how scientists document research, and what scientific literature sources were cited. Before the class I knew that scientific article summarize a research done by a group of authors. Also, I knew that each article contains many sections. However, the academic writing class (ENGL 4893) improved my understanding for the role of each section. In addition, I improved my academic writing skills, taking advantage of the various practices we did at the class.
In my previous English Composition course, the teacher, known as Professor Ostrenko, had a peculiar way of teaching and practicing writing. For her, no matter how extraordinary an essay was or exemplary the concept nothing could get over a ninety-nine percent because , as she would say, there is always room for improvement. Over the semester, she pushed me to shift my tone from assignment to assignment so a supposedly energetic and light assignment would not appear dark and Gothic as some of my other papers. She allowed me to see some of my weak points in writing and try to work around them so I could have a better literary career. In this English composition course, I believe it can also help do the same and train me to shift my tone effectively
