Each trimester we the students are asked to create a memorandum in regards to our writing strengths and strategies, as well as our weaknesses and challenges. We also look at what we hope to gain from this Composition and Communication course. Outlined below are the three categories.
1. In my writing, I find that my strengths include my ability to deliver a rich vocabulary within my writing, my proficiency of being able to outline a strategy for an essay, as well as my skillset of being able to effectively organize my ideas within essays while still being able to construct sensible and clear arguments.
2. I find that my weaknesses while writing are a direct correlation to my tendency to overthink about a subject. I tend to stare at a page
Chiefly, I tend to overcomplicate tasks in a variety of applications: writing, working, studying and so on. This proclivity to overcomplicate things makes my writing oftentimes verbose. Verbosity can diminish the impact of writing, especially by disengaging the audience and losing their focus. Additionally, another weakness I have in writing is of the preliminary writing process. I struggle to begin a piece of writing. A painstaking process, I often write the primary draft of a piece five or six times before I reach a product I am willing to work with. This likely is directly related to my tendency to complicate my work. Lastly, my writing also suffers from too singular of a focus. During the writing process, I tend to fixate on a singular viewpoint of a topic. I believe that my writing would be benefit by developing the ability to step back from a topic and evaluate it through a broader lens and looking at the extensive context of the issue I am working with. Allowing myself to this more often would provide far more developed thought and perspective in my writing.
The art of writing is a complex and difficult process. Proper writing requires careful planning, revision, and proofreading. Throughout the past semester, the quality of my writing has evolved significantly. At first, I struggled with the separation of different types of paragraphs, and I found writing them laborious. Constant practice, however, has eliminated many of my original difficulties, and helped to inspire confidence in my skills. As a collegiate writer, my strength lies in my clear understanding of the fundamentals of writing, while my primary weakness is proofreading my own work.
I may tend to run on about a subject or topic and get side tracked. Not being able to get back on track towards the thesis statement can be challenging and difficult as it is one of my anxieties in writing. I am a very opinionated person, which may hurt me in the long run. A lot of times people may not have the same opinions as I do and it may make the reader mad or discouraged. Overall, I believe a writer needs to be able to express themselves and not be distinguished as a bad writer because they believe very strongly about a subject. I have a few weaknesses, butI believe, my strengths overpower my weaknesses and I can stand out as a writer for the
Another one of my weaknesses is that I am not a quick thinker, which prohibits my participation in socratics and lengthens the time it takes me to write essays. Because of this, I usually spend unnecessary lengths of time on essays and other assignments, which makes me fall behind in the class. An additional reason I take so long to type essays is because I have the mentality that everything must be perfect
When I stop to think about the memory’s that I have made during my first semester of college; there are both good and bad pieces or times that present themselves. Often with many things there are gray areas, and writing would fall in there for me. I fortunately understand now that I have times where I can over look many of my writing flaws. Such as sentence structure! This by far was my biggest problem in this class, and I fully understand why. Personally I have times that will type up a paragraph and never notice the mistake. That is until someone points it out to me. It’s almost like my brain knows that something is wrong with it, but for some unknown reason it won’t register when I’m revising my paper. So as a writer I have realized that I need to take advantage of people around me and get their feedback on my essay’s; because
When I am writing narratives, I use many different characteristics to describe the characters, and when I was watching Ted Talks and doing the chart, it made me think about the speaker’s features and how I can use them to describe my characters better. Also, I use my time efficiently I don’t fool around and talk to others. I get right to my work and complete it. I accept writing criticism very well too, I use it to improve my writing. Another strength that I have in writing is I have excellent spelling, and I punctuate very well. Likewise in writing, I also have my strengths in reading. While reading a novel, I can illustrate what is going on in the book or the story in my mind which helps me understand that story more. It helps me to ‘get into’ the book. Also, another strength that I have in reading is that I can annotate and get information out of books very well. That, coupled with the fact that I am very good at figuring out hidden messages or finding the theme of the book. Notes I take from the novel help when I am flipping back through the book to support my theme or message with evidence.
One strength that I find as a writer is being able to back up my side of an argumentative or persuasive essay. I am confident in my ability to make my readers believe in my views of an issue and make these views their own; if not, I am able to sway the
I do not have very many strengths in English and writing. My strengths in English and writing are organization, sentence structure, and developing a position. I am good at organizing my papers and essays because, to me, if they are not organized in a sensible way the writing sounds choppy and incoherent. Sentence structure
Most of the time when someone is told to write a paper, they read the directions and follow the prompt. But when told to think about strengths and weaknesses of how they actually write those papers, it is a good eye opener to realize what needs to be improved and what is already superior quality. For my writing, being a perfectionist is in many ways a strength, but it can also be a weakness. My perfectionism affects all of my other strengths and weaknesses in my writing.
Personally, I believe my biggest flaw as a writer is my inability to accept criticism and changes in content. I can effectively fix grammatical and basic stylistic issues within my writing easily. However, I find changing content extremely difficult. When
As a writer, I feel that my weakness is struggling with time management and trying to get my best draft as my first draft. I have always struggled with trying to put forth the best draft on the first one and just making little adjustments and then turning the paper in. Another weakness I have is to over complicate my writing and over think submitting the final draft. Every single essay that I have had to write throughout this semester I have struggled with these problems. Particularly the research paper, since the paper was worth such a big percentage of the grade in the class. I was extremely self-conscious about submitting and writing the paper. I took a long time just to finish a rough draft. I reviewed the final draft for hours before submitting the paper. I also experienced the problem of being extremely self-conscious after I submitted the paper and question everything I choose to write on.
My biggest weakness is my unlikeness for writing. I don’t enjoy writing because I am never satisfied with the papers I write. I read a lot of books, so when I write a paper I want it to be up to my standards. If I never had a deadline, I would continue editing my paper forever. I want my papers to have the perfect tone. I come off as robotic and boring in my papers. My papers are hardly interesting because
My greatest weakness is writing essays. Especially revising my essays I had to teach myself to think critically. My other weakness was grammar, and fragments. I have noticed the majority of my sentences were fragments. I had to teach myself to slow down. Time management was the key to slow down. It takes a little longer to write an essay with brainstorming and outline. The results were better results for each paragraph and sub lines of each paragraph would consist of such as sources. I have learned to transition sentences, and allowing all my sentences in my
My biggest struggle in writing would be starting my introduction because I never really know what information to add in my stating my thesis statement. Although, one way I’m trying to improve this struggle is by either adding small quotes or definitions to hook the reader and to add some info about my topic. Furthermore, one essay that I feel reflects my writing the best would be the midterm essay. I picked the midterm essay because even though it was timed I still took my time and carefully picked which examples I thought would best represent my opinions. In addition, I feel using the quote “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world” by Nelson Mandela was a very powerful way to keep the reader interested. Ultimately, while I still haven’t overcome the obstacle of writing an introduction I know I’m slowly starting to find my way towards my goal of not struggling when it comes to starting my essays.
Writing is not just as simple as putting words down on a document or a piece of paper, it is a process. Within this intricate process are steps that involve more than just writing, such as critical thinking, planning, and editing. Using these steps has not only helped me when planning an essay but also when composing one. Throughout this course, I have managed to improve many skills and gain a lot of strengths, but I still possess some weaknesses. Overall, I believe my strengths have definitely outgrown these weaknesses and have led to a better, more high-quality writing process which leads to improved essays.
