Gods and Goddesses of Greek Mythology
In Greek mythology there are some very important gods and goddesses that are very powerful and wise. Characters like Helios, the god of the sun, Laestrygones, the cannibal giants, and Tiresias, the blind prophet can show their significance to greek mythology. Helios, Laestrygones, and Tiresias are very important to Greek mythology because they all show characteristics of Greek history. First, Helios, son of Hyperion and Theia and Greek god of the sun, he appears in greek mythology, and he is known for riding the four horse chariot. Helios is the second generation of the Titan gods. Helios son, Phaeton, was riding in the chariot and he lost control and he wrecked the chariot and it set the world on fire. Helios was one of the most extraordinary number of gods worshipped by ancient greeks. He drove his chariot across the sky and made the sun rise each day across the world. He participated in the war of the Gigantes and the Titanes and after the war, he was known as Titan.(Atsma) He was the inventor of the four horse chariot, the names of the horses were Pyrois, Aeos, Aethon, and Phlegon and he was later given the golden chariot. He is now described as the one who watches from above and sees and observes anyone or anything. Secondly, Laestrygones, man eating giants. Laestrygones appear in some of greek mythology. Laestrygones are also known as Laestrygonians. The Laestrygonians are known for destroying Odysseus fleet. The Laestrygonians destroyed 11 of Odysseus’s 12 ships by throwing rocks from high cliffs. The Laestrygonians are very strong and powerful. The Laestrygonians ate many of Odysseus’s men. The Laestrygonians try to eat everyone who comes on their land. The Laestrygonians will eat anyone who threatens them. The Laestrygonians live in the city of Telepylos and that city is ruled by Lamos and Antiphates. The Laestrygonians king was Antiphates. The Laestrygonians are not scared to eat or hurt anyone. The Laestrygonians are important to greek mythology.

The Greek gods were thought of as the most powerful forces to ever exist in ancient times. In turn, they played a pivotal role in the Greek people’s lives. Their power and influence over the Greek people is evident in many of the stories in Greek literature. Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades, the most powerful Greek gods, each played a part in the story of Antigone by Sophocles.
In myths we come across many names of gods and goddesses and strange creatures. All of them have many stories related to them. Different gods represent different aspects of life and the Earth is under their control.
In my research I have learned an addition of facts and stories about Greek mythology. Like how “the Pegasus and Chrysor came from the blood of Medusa’s head after Perseus cut it off” (Greek Mythology). Or how the “Amazonian group of warriors was all females” (Greek Mythology). The more that I have research about my topic the more fascinating and interesting it becomes. I hope that everyone will further their research and knowledge on this topic whether it’s reading a book, researching on the Internet, or even just watching a movie.
As Hephaestus is notified of Thetis’ arrival, he explores what their relationship has meant to him. Hephaestus recalls that “Thetis saved my life when the mortal pain came on me after my great fall…” (P. 480) After Hephaestus falls out of Zeus’ good graces, Thetis is able to lend her helping hand, displaying the hierarchical dynamic between the gods. The gods are indebted to each other, the likely reason that Hephaestus felt as though he needed to make Thetis the ornate shield. The duty and obligation to each other fuels the mutualistic relationships between the gods. Thetis’ motivation to help Hephaestus was not solely out of kindness; rather Thetis saw the opportunity to make a strategic move and put Hephaestus in her debt, knowing that she very well could use his services in her future. Hephaestus describes the pain that he felt as “mortal pain” signifying a distinction between the discomforts and vulnerability of mortals and gods.
The second god that I want to focus on is Bacchus. Bacchus was the Greek and roman god of vine and wine. He was the son of Zeus and Semele. The Romans identified him as Dionsysus. Myth has it that he was very ugly at birth. He was horned and was crowned with a crown of snakes. He was boiled in a cauldron and banished to Mt Nysa by his parents. It was here that he invented wine. He eventually returned to Greece where he organized drunken revelries. He married Andriadne, daughter of King Minos. Myth also has it that he died in the winter and was reborn in the spring.
Odysseus is known for being a great war hero and leader who must go through many obstacles to reach his homeland of Ithaca. Many of the obstacles are caused by the gods, however Odysseus is the cause of his own troubles. He does not learn from his mistakes and his main flaw is pride.
the great hero who built the Trojan horse.” stated by Aeolus. After his victory it was almost as if he too was a god. This only caused him to believe he is equal to the gods
Helios was and still is commonly identified with Apollo. Apollo was a Greek Olympian, while Helios was a Titan. Apollo was the god of music, poetry, truth and prophecy, healing, plague, and more. Apollo is also said to be the god of light and the sun, but in Ancient Greek drawings Helios is often depicted as a separate sun
Zeus was the supreme god and ruler of Olympus. He was known by many names: Lord of the Sky, the Rain-god, the Cloud-gatherer, and Zeus the Thunderer. Zeus was the sixth child born to Cronus and Rhea behind Poseidon, Hades, Hestia, Dementer, and Hera. The high soaring eagle was sacred to him, and to the Romans he was known as Jupiter. Zeus was a strong, mighty, awesome, glorious, and wise god. Although, he was very foolish and naïve with hiding his love affairs from Hera.
In 5th century BC, Helios was regarded as a chief god. He was worshipped as a sun god in Greek, especially in Rhodes (fanpop.com, 2015). He was depicted as having glowing eyes, golden blonde hair, and clothed in a purple robe and crowned with shining aureole of the sun. Helios was the son of Hyperion and Theia and he was an original Titan (Theoi Encyclopedia inc., 2015). He was the original god of the sun before he was replaced by Apollo. He was the husband to Clymene, the Nymph of the island of Rhodes. He was referred to being the one who watches from above and sees and observes anyone or anything if he wishes, not just on earth but in heaven also (greek-gods.org, 2015). Helios had a son who he thought was the brightest and bravest kid
Helios is the god of the sun and sight. He is very handsome and very strong. In fact, he is the only god who could control his chariot because of the untamed horses. He is clean shaven with purple robes and a shining crown of sun rays. Helios is the father of Circe and Phaëthon. Helios had to rub ointment on himself to protect his body from burning from the heat. "While Helios is away on his normal business, Zeus and the other gods drew lots to divide the earth. Helios did not get any of the earth so he claimed the Island of Rhodes.(Tripp 268)" Phaëthon is a mortal son to Helios, while Circe is not. Phaëthon loved his father's work and always wanted to steer the chariot, but his father never agreed. Finally, Helios gave in and let his son Phaëthon drive the chariot for one day. He drove for a little less than half the morning and lost control of the reigns. The horses went
One of the first mortals known was Demeter, the child of Zeus and Persephone, is known as the goddess of the underworld. After leaving Demeter, Zeus then moved on and mated with Leto with whom he then created the twin gods known as Artemis and Apollo. Apollo was known for many things following his birth. Apollo had a numours things he is remembered for, but a few is being the Olympian God of the Sun, the Light and the Music and the Prophecy. (GREEK-GODS.INFO 4).
In Greek Mythology, perhaps one of the most rudimental yet one of the most important elements are the Greek Gods and Goddesses. The ancient Greeks created the stories about the lives and journeys of the Greek Gods, known as myths, simply as an endeavor to elucidate nature and all phenomena which were difficult to explain using modern science and logic. These myths about the Gods were spread around the world by explorers and storytellers, and later merged with Greek religion. To this day, numerous myths survived through many writings and through much art. Each of these myths is very unique, and moreover, tells us much about the Greek Gods. The Greek myths in particular convey to us that Greek Gods and Goddesses looked and acted like humans,
