It was December first of this year. My father and I were going on the annual deer hunting trip that he has always gone on, and finally I was at the age when I could join him on this foray.
Everyone else and I gathered around on a country back road to discuss where we were all going to go. After a lot of consideration, we all head out to our assigned spots for that time. My dad and I plunked ourselves beside a tree stand, waiting for our first crack at a buck.
One hour passed and nothing happened—well, nothing for us. Some of the other group members, however, had early action.
Another hour passed, and both my dad and I started to consider packing it in for another spot. Just then, my dad alerted me to five deer bounding across the road. My dad and I packed it in to head to our second location.
When you are out in the wilderness for a long period of time, just sitting, staring out into the brush and trees, your mind starts to become on edge. Your mind starts to play tricks on you, and makes you feel that any of the slightest movements are your target.
Our second location was sitting on a bunch of rocks, just outside of the cedar backwoods. We knew this was going to be our lucky location—well, at least I thought that. We waited a long time in the other spot, but this was even longer. We thought of heading back for lunch because of the fact we were all very hungry, but like I said, this spot felt as if it were the one.
Suddenly, I heard a rustling in the cedar brush. I thought it was be too good to be true, but I knew it was not a small rustling sound, like a squirrel or something—no, this was big. I looked back to say to my dad, “Did you hear that?”
