Essay On Deer Hunting

Hunting is very valuable to me, but the value is deeper than just hunting. There are so many aspects of hunting that I love. But I cherish my bow above all of them. Having my bow with me when I’m in the stand or when I’m at my neighbor’s house practicing, gives me a since of dominance. Also brings me pride knowing I’ve worked hard and stayed committed to something I truly love. There are all kinds of animals to hunt and different ways to hunt them. My favorite type of animal to hunt, is the white tail deer. While hunting the allusive deer I like to follow a code of ethics, which a lot of people don’t follow. Even though I would have liked to be given all my hunting needs, I’m proud of myself for going out and getting those needs by myself. Buying my bow and getting into bow hunting, caused me to take responsibility and taught me to stay committed to a true value in my life.

Many people think of the bahamas, or a five star hotel when a vacation is mentioned, however that is not true for all. For those who enjoy the outdoors and nature, a nice hunting trip speak more to them. Hunting has been seen in our culture for centuries as a way of reconnecting with nature, and in todays world with the lack of predators it is used to keep nature in balance, as well as keeping in touch with our ancestral traditions.

Many people have misconceptions about hunting. One such misconception is that hunting is easy and any person can go sit in the woods and wait for an animal to cross the hunter’s path. However, people who believe this are sorely mistaken. Hunting is not just sitting in the woods with a rifle; there are many other aspects that must be considered. An individual must have all preparations complete, purchase or gather the equipment needed, and know what to listen for while in the woods.

In my time researching I have learned so much more about the poaching in Idaho. From articles to an interview I have learned more about poaching that I have changed my perspective on how bad it is Idaho. In my opinion I had always thought that wolves were doing the most harm to our wildlife until I had read one article that had described how poachers are killing more wildlife than the wolves. In Northern Idaho Officials said that last year there were 30 elk, four moose, 13 mule deer, and 57 whitetail deer that were confirmed poached. The officials also claim that those numbers are only 5% of the poached animals making the number about 600 elk, 80 moose, 260 mule deer, and 1000 whitetail deer annually! As many people know, poaching has been a common problem around the United States. In Idaho specifically, hunting is considered a pretty big sport, therefore there are quite a few poachers in Idaho. Title 36 Fish and Game, Chapter 14 General Penal Provisions, also known as policy 36-1404, speaks and addresses the problem of poaching in the state of Idaho. “Any person who pleads guilty, is found guilty of or is convicted of the illegal killing or the illegal possession or illegal waste of game animals or birds or fish shall reimburse the state for each animal so killed or possessed or wasted” (Idaho Statutes). For each animal there are different punishments, for example elk have a seven hundred and fifty dollar fine for each animal killed, possessed or wasted. As for caribou, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, and moose the fine is much larger, on thousand five hundred dollars for each animal. Any other species of big game that was not named results in a four hundred dollar fine for each animal killed, possessed or wasted (Idaho Statutes). Trophy big game animals result in a much larger punishment. Trophy bighorn sheep, trophy moose, trophy mountain goat, and trophy caribou killed, possessed or wasted result in a ten thousand dollar fine. The third Saturday of November was one filled with conflicting emotions: excitement, fear, optimism, and nervousness. The screeching sound of the alarm at 4:00 a.m. initiated a sense of panic and thrill throughout me; it was the opening day of the gun deer hunting season. Obviously, no one is taking 200 yard shots with even the most powerful crossbow, so long range capability isn't a concern while bow hunting. Now it may be a big concern to the bow hunter who also uses a rifle (or even just plays golf, but that's another topic). But just focusing on the act of bow hunting, the typical 100 yard range limit of most dedicated bow hunting range finders would be fine.

This quote not only shows that poaching is a generational concept passed down from the years before, but that with strong enforcement and education, the act of poaching can be thwarted. Poaching, in my eyes is theft, a slap in the face to everyone who attempts to follow the rules and respect the natural world in which they live and play. It is estimated “that less than 5 percent of the citizens poach. This number is just an estimate, but we also speculate that less than 1 percent are caught” (Chapin 4). I feel the reason being that only 1 percent of the 5 percent of citizens that poach get got is due to the lack of enforcement officers. With an average conservation officer’s range of duty being 650 square miles, it makes it quite difficult to catch every abuser. This is where programs like Turn In Poachers (TIP) can be effective in supplementing  a citizen's concerns with an officer’s daily patrol. Created in 1981, “this program has been a deterrent to the senseless waste of wildlife and is extremely beneficial to the DNR Enforcement Division” (“Turn in Poachers”). Thankfully, as stated by Chapin, poaching has diminished in certain areas. The social acceptability of big game poaching of deer and other small game just is not like it once was. Although poaching is an illegal act, it is still a growing problem in the world because it is making the extinction of various animals more probable. Not only it cruel, but it affects the environment and ecosystem where these animals reside. Although various people, usually trophy hunters or those uninformed, argue that it isn’t that big of a problem, there are realities to it that won’t be stopped unless we act upon it and bring awareness of the situation.

INTRO: I never thought I would feel so awful after pulling that trigger and watching that innocent animal give it’s life to me. I was only ten years old and my life was certainly impacted forever. Nowadays, many people think that pulling the trigger of a gun is not hard at all. In reality, it might be pretty easy. It is the aftermath on the other hand that will leave an internal scar, changing a person forever. On my first deer hunt, a young buck stepped out of the dense willow clusters with it’s head down, giving me a shot. Soon I would be faced with the tough decision of taking the life of an innocent animal. Meanwhile, on my first turkey hunt, there too I would soon be changed forever.

Animal poaching has a bigger price tag than the trophy sitting on the shelf. Poaching is causing iconic animals of many continents and of our oceans to become endangered or even extinct. These animals that people have come to love and fantasize over may be gone before we are (Africa). Elephants, rhinos, lions, and zebras are the animals thought of the most when it comes to animal poaching, but many animals are poached. They are killed for only one quality, like their horns or skins and the rest of the animal is left behind. Poaching is a massive business that is ran by international networks, it’s estimated to make hundreds of millions of dollars (World). Not all wildlife trade is illegal, but it becomes a crisis when an increasing amount of illegal poaching is done and it directly threatens the survival of species in the wild (World). Since 1960 97.6% of the Black Rhino population in Africa has been poached and lions are extinct in seven African countries (Africa).

Studies have shown in recent years that the amount of problems for game wardens has increased dramatically. In an article by the New York Time’s, William Dicke states that in previous years, economic issues have caused an uptick in poaching (Dicke, para. 7). Due to the sheer number of unemployed and the rates going up, crime is rising as well, and it shows in abnormal crimes like poaching. Since the unemployed have nothing to do, and they have too much time on their hands, the act of poaching is becoming more common. Often the animal is not harvested for its food products, but instead for its antlers or skin. This goes to demonstrate one of the various problems that game wardens often face, poaching.

Humans have been hunting on this planet for over two million years. Our ancestors used complex hunting techniques to ambush and kill antelopes, gazelles, and other large animals dated back to times before Christ. People all around the world still carry on the tradition, but the view on hunting is not the same as it was back then. The world is so industrialized, and people think hunting is cruel and useless because you can buy meat at grocery stores. But in reality, it is the reason the wildlife they see are not extinct. Harvesting game not only benefits the hunter with the meat, but also the land, the wildlife, and controls the game population; therefore, without it wildlife would starve, and land would not be managed.
