Everything had began magnificently the day I attended the renaissance fair. It was the first time I’d ever been to any festival of the sort, and the air was full of magic. At exactly 10:30 in the morning, the ceremony began. The King and Queen presented themselves atop the castle’s balcony to address their people. As the beautiful royals welcomed us into their kingdom, my heart beat erratically, and I crossed the threshold with my breath held. There were so many events that I wanted to see, and activities I wanted to try; I couldn’t wait to get inside. I wasn’t just an ordinary guest, however, I had a job to do. Carrying my instrument lightly with one hand, dressed as a princess and feeling important, I walked proudly through the bustling
Fran admired and collected other artist’s work for her home, but also as part of her trove of infinite objects that often made their way into her art. From the mad jumble of countless boxes and bags in her studio came often playful “bricolage” works of beauty, humor and imagination. She taught for many years at the New Jersey Center for the Visual Arts, the Newark Museum and was actively teaching until just weeks before her death last year. An award-winning artist, she exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, the Smithsonian, Victoria and Albert Museum, and in galleries throughout New Jersey. She began her eight-decade career as a fashion designer before moving into painting, printmaking, found art sculpture, book and paper making, and other multi-media arts. Fran studied art at the American School of Fine Arts, Newark School of Fine Arts, and Fairleigh Dickinson University. The works in this exhibition were generously donated by Fran’s family to The 1978 Maplewood Arts Center. Proceeds from all sales will benefit the center as well as public art in the

The preservation of traditions and skills is an important part of our community and family history. As Rose stated in “Let the Good Times Roll”, “It is the harmonic convenience of our food, our music, our creativity, our eccentricity, our neighborhoods, and our joy of living. All at once” (361). During the fall of every year, towns across Georgia host a festival of some sort. Whether it be the Yellow Daisy Festival at Stone Mountain Park or the Friendship Festival in Social Circle, local artist and craftsmen come together to display and sell their handmade items. When the show actually began, it started with a digital green timer on the wall counting by the second, accompanied by Mr. Jones sitting at a desk with a desk lamp. He began to read a story as a single dancer in a pink long sleeved top danced beside him. This dancer was definitely the most memorable mover of the company due to her exquisite fluidity within her movement, as well as the desirable synchronization between her movements and the words of Mr. Jones’s voice throughout the piece. As the performance carried on, the other dancers performed various solos, duets, and quartets, of modern movement while Mr. Jones’s stories carried on.
The director and choreographer Matthew Peters did an excellent job in keeping the show fast paced and

I encountered many obstacles while planning the event. Due to hectic schedules, my peers were involved in other activities and had little time to assist me in planning the concert. As a result, I realized that if we wanted a successful event, I would need to take the lead alone.

However, it is essential to point out that Deborah Ryan argued that to see pageants as anti-modern is an oversimplification. For example, Ryan deemed, by drawing on the argument presented by Bill Schwarz, that “the inventiveness of tradition may have required a popular projection of modernity and of the future to sustain the idea of the past.” This suggests that although Parkerian pageants can be argued to be historical in the sense that it focuses on historical accuracy, Ryan’s argument does not undermine the importance of history. This is particularly because she suggests that pageants still focused on the historic past in order to understand the present. Therefore, in Ryan’s words “pageants can be seen as part of the modern mass culture
On December 1, 2017, in the University Theatre at California State University, Dominguez Hills, I observed the fall dance concert Rise. It was choreographed by Amy Michelle Allen, Marco A, Carreon, Sarah Cashmore, Jeff Hendrix, Erin Landry, Doris Ressl Acosta, and Kenneth Walker, with the long cast of dancers. The production was pleasing, and would not have been believable without the work from production designers, Frederick Depontee and Cheryl Sheldon. Rise is played out in eight different dance routines, which were Xtra Xtra, Scar Tissue, Hart Broken, Things Are A Stirrin’, and the rest are intermissions such as Female Energy, Women, Exotica, Strength In Numbers, and Makina.
