Florence Kelley, an active social worker and reformer of the 20th century, rants over the horrendous working conditions kids must endure. She presents this in her speech before National American Woman Suffrage Association in Philadelphia, which provides context and credibility for her argument. Kelley argues clearly of the terrible conditions and work hours kids suffer to bring about her message of, “enlisting the workingmen voters.” This is essentially to free the kids from the disastrous issue through her usage of credibility, empathetic tone to strike the audience, and her usage of examples of their conditions and state rules to support her message and purpose.

Starting this year, I thought English 102 was just going to be another general education requirement I needed to have in order to graduate. English has never been my favorite subject, so I guess it is safe to say that I was not super excited about this class. However, this class turned out to be different then I thought. It turned out to be more useful then I originally thought. English 102 was both helpful and fairly simple because of what what I learned, the effort I put in and how prepared I was.

I came from a high school where all my closest friends were athletic like me, were loud and vulgar like me, and extremely prideful like me. The athleticism inspired an extremely competitive bond between us. Our pride wouldn’t allow us to lose to each other in any event. Anything was a competition; racing down the street, a better grade on a test, how much food we ate during lunch are all examples. Needless to say, if any of my buddies and I shared the same class we would fight for the teachers and peers attention by attempting to be the funniest and most importantly, the loudest. I have minimal experience with writing analyses; therefore, my essay contained summaries with only a few pieces of analysis. I feel that my essay was mainly composed of miniature summaries with a sentence or two analyzing a specific literary device used, diction, etc. As I continue to write rhetorical analyses, I strive to be more familiar with the analyzing process so that when I have to write an analysis for class or the AP exam, I will be sufficiently prepared. The structure of my analysis is not as mature as it should be in relation to the standards of an AP English class.

In each of these excerpts Anzaldua uses multiple rhetorical modes in order to try and connect with her readers. In excerpt 1 Anzaldua uses narration and description to connect with her readers. She starts off excerpt 1 by recalling some her painful childhood memories and experiences from attending school in America. During the excerpt readers can sympathize or for Anzaldua as she recalls a time when she was isolated from the rest of her class because she was “talking back” to her teacher, when all she was trying to do was pronounce her name. Whether or not you have ever experienced something like you this you like help but feel sympathy for her.

Larry Karson, of the University of Houston’s Department of criminal justice, wrote his article about how a Grand Jury gets put together in the state of Texas. He clearly explains the process of picking the members for the Grand and Petit Jury and compares these processes with each other. Like two of the other articles I have mentioned, this article also explains the historical background and how Grand juries first started. It goes into depth of how racial discrimination in the Texas juries plays a roll with the proper functioning of the juries and how this problem can be averted.

Kelley promotes an end to child labor by utilizing pathos and repetition in her speech to strengthen her claim. By stating out facts, she compares the conditions of young boys and girls with healthy men in order to emphasize about child abuse and to encourage her audience to stand with her to fight for child labor laws.

The rhetorical analysis I composed was written on an article called,“The confessions of a liberal gun owner,”by Justin Cronin. This type of writing opened me up to a new style of composing that I am not familiar with. I really enjoyed being able to show my view of whether I thought that this article was effective. Critisizing the writer for doing certain things was very interesting and made me feel more independent and powerful. I did not like that I could not use my personal opinion but could use what I thought as the audience of the paper. This confused me at first but I eventually understood the reasoning behind it. Lynn Everson’s (2014) presentation on prostitution and drug use within Spokane, was inspirational, and emphasized that all human beings are worthy of a healthy lifestyle, and deserve to be treated with care and respect. Everson works for the Needle Exchange program through Spokane Regional Healthy, and despite harsh criticism of the program she continues to be a strong ally, and advocate for the prostitutes and illegal drug users of Spokane. She has successfully connected to this population by providing unconditional support to those in need, and handing out free condoms and clean needles. Everson’s ultimate goal is to keep individuals healthy, and lower the risk of HIV and AIDS. The universal message is that individuals who are involved in prostitution and drug use, are human beings, and have the right to be safe in their daily lives, despite many individuals not believing this is a population that is worthy of rights.

A selection from his autobiography Seeker Of Visions: The Life Of A Sioux Medicine Man titled “Talking to the Owls and Butterflies” is a short piece regarding nature and man’s relationship with it. The piece was intended to make an impression on white people in order to help salvage what is remaining in the environment. In the article Boffey et al. sets out to explain the situation that is occurring between the EU and Spain on deals involving the Gibraltar with respect to negotiations between London and Brussels. The article is expresses this by its expository rhetoric that is demonstrated with its tone and point of view. The tone establishes the informative approach to the information by using political figures and statistics to refer to the situation, allowing Boffey et al. to show creditability.
