Their eyes searched the sky for a glimpse of the American flag that flew above the fort. Finally in the early hours of September 14, 1814 Francis Scott Key saw the Star Spangled Banner standing tall above Fort McHenry. The sight so inspired him that he wrote a poem entitled, "The Defense of Fort McHenry" which was published as a broadside and later set to the tune of an old British drinking song. The Great Garrison Flag that flew above Fort McHenry was the inspiration for the name "The Star Spangled Banner" and still hangs in the Smithsonian in Washington

The drama of the flag began back in August 1831 when a young sea captain named William Driver was enjoying his birthday and a promotion as the shipmaster of the brig Charles Doggett, based at Salem, Mass. Family and friends presented Driver with a large American flag with 24 stars. When he unfurled it for the first time, he exclaimed “Old Glory!” so the legend goes.
Throughout the years there has been many flags that represent something unique of a nation. Flags that symbolizes our freedom and pride of becoming part of that nation. These flags give us the motivation and strength to fight until the end for the protection of our nation. However, as years went by, many different flags have brought about many controversies that have resulted in the fall and disappearance of them, all except one, the Confederate Flag. The Confederate flag is a well-known historical flag all around the United States and possibly around the world. However, this flag has provoked many controversial situations in the nation due to the way individuals interpret it.
The flag has been a symbol for the United States for decades. On June 14, 1777 the first flag was officially commissioned by the Continental Congress (U.S. Flag, 2005, para. 3). The flag is a trademark for the freedoms embraced by the citizens of the United States, and is a beacon of hope for those fighting to keep those freedoms. The flag is greatly respected by the citizens of the United States. There are multitudinous people who use the flag as a form of protest in ways such as ripping it, burning it, or trampling on it. These acts are forms of desecration of the flag. Desecration is the use of something considered sacred in a profane way. Every American is entitled to an opinion and has the freedom the express these opinions. The flag is a symbol of freedoms, stated and protected in the Constitution of the United States.
The American flag not only stands for pride, freedom, and strength but the colors on the flag have a meaning behind them that all Americans should understand. The use of the so called confederate flag isn't really a national flag at all. The commonly used symbol of the south and recently debated symbol has come under fire as racist and as a symbol of white supremecy. In true meaning the flags shown above are all different variations of flags flown by the confederate states during their four year succession from the united States. The battle flag is the one most commonly used as a symbol of southern pride. Many believe the flag portraits proslavery views which it does not. The flags colors stand the same meaning for those on old Glory but the thirteen stars represent the thirteen succeeded states. This flag never flew for slavery but only for the rights of the individuals from 13 states. This flag
The confederacy is dead. The Civil War is long over, and the United States has experienced much growth and development since its end, much of this due to the outcome of the war. A new, united America flourished throughout the late eighteen hundreds gaining a great deal of power through high levels of commerce and trade. There is no doubt that America is better off now because of the outcome of the War between the States. However, many of the symbols of the Civil War remain very active in the present world; they are very much alive and charged with meaning and power. Probably the best known among all of these symbols is the Confederate Battle Flag. The “rebel flag” has taken on
The origin of the flag started on February 9, 1861 when the Confederate Congress met in Alabama to establish the Committee on the Flag and Seal (Clemens, 2016). The first flag that was originally designed by Miles mentioned earlier, was not accepted by the Committee and on March 4, 1861 the Confederacy adopted its first national flag which came to be known as the Stars and Bars. This flag was rectangular with three horizontal bars alternating red, white, and red. In the upper left was a potion of a blue circle of white stars representing each Confederate state which eventually there were thirteen (Clemens, 2016).

The first fold of our flag is a symbol of life. The second fold is a symbol of our belief in eternal life. The third fold is made in honor and remembrance of the veterans departing our ranks who gave a portion of their life for the defense of our country to attain peace throughout the world. The forth fold represents our weaker nature, for as American citizens trusting in God, it is Him we turn in times of peace as well as in time of war for His divine guidance. The fifth fold is a tribute to our country, for in the words of Stephen Decatur “Our country, in dealing with other countries, may she always be right: but is it still our country, right or wrong.”
