1. Discuss the purpose of the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS)? What is their responsibility pertaining to the ICD-10-CM? Discuss this in detail.
The National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) is a principal agency of the U.S. Federal Statistical System which provides statistical information to guide actions and policies to improve the health of the American people. The NCHS is responsible for helping develop the new version of the ICD-9 CM, which is the ICD-10. Their job is to help improve the health of the people by dealing with statistical information that include actions and policies. The ICD-10 was an improvement from the ICD-9. It is easier to use and it has deleted codes and added them as well. It has also made improvements
Complete the following table for each of the diseases assigned to you in NFS 715. The purpose of this assignment is to teach you how current research and evidence summaries are used to influence patient care.
With the growing ability of organizations to capture and analyze large batches of data, there are ever-increasing possibilities for the development of healthcare studies utilizing Big Data’s promise of advancement in data processing. These tools can benefit the field of healthcare by treating data as an asset to be managed, as well as providing new insights into genomic development of large populations that were previously not fathomable. The health care industry is one sector of the economy where data analysis presents great opportunities for improvement in the quality of services provided, but with these possibilities come great challenges in collecting, utilizing, and education the next generation of data stewards, and the NIH is sure to look to global models for data quality in carrying out their new directive.
rovide a brief synopsis of the case study that includes a historical overview of the organization
Due to this funding schema, political ideology plays an integral role in the development of additional health programs and the budget allocation to the provinces for healthcare. At the provincial level, politicians and their respective political parties (ideology) decide the region-specific program allocation for health care dollars. The 2004 Health Accord is a legal agreement between the federal and provincial and territorial governments brought in by former Liberal prime minister Paul Martin. At the time, he called it a "fix for a generation" that promised to reduce wait times and improve patient care with a $41 billion injection over a decade. After deep cuts through the 1990s, the goal was to provide stable funding through a 10-year
Establishing standards for vocabularies promote data quality within health information systems. Scholarly works support this principle within the Health Information Management profession. The following articles support data quality, standardization, and interoperability as critical components of health information management and exchange. The goal of true exchange will include data sharing of critical information across the care continuum, often across disparate systems.
The International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) has been in development since 1983 to replace the outdated Ninth Revision (ICD-9) that has been in use in the U.S. for over 35 years (Giannangelo, 2015). Due to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Administrative Simplification regulation published in 2009, the Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) will replace ICD-9-CM Volumes 1 and 2, and the Procedure Coding System (ICD-10-PCS) will replace ICD-9-CM Volume 3 for all HIPAA transactions effective October 2015 (Giannangelo, 2015). These new code sets accommodate new procedures and diagnoses and allow for greater specificity in clinical documentation (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services [CMS],
The National Institute of Health (2014) listed the most common form of familial hyperinsulinism to be an autosomal recessive genetic defect that is common among the Ashkenazi Jewish population. This condition affects 1 in 66 carriers who are Ashkenazi Jews since they have reported consanguineous marriages (NIH, 2014). Among Ashkenazi Jews, two single ABCC8 mutations account for 90 percent of cases of familiar hyperinsulinism (Mazor-Aronovitch, et al, 2007). The incidence of FHI in individuals of northern European descendants is approximately 1:30,000 live births. The incidence is increased in genetically isolated populations with a high prevalence of consanguinity (UpToDate.com).
At Kaiser Permanente, the primary decision makers are the physicians. In addition to that, The Permanente Medical Groups keeps on devising methods through which the Kaiser Permanente organization can provide its members with high quality and efficient health care
Can you image having something lounged in your knee causing unbearable pain after surgery. In 2010 a patient went to a local hospital in Woodland Hills California, to have a knee replacement surgery done, and the operating surgeon left a foreign object inside the knee after performing surgery.(CDOPH). (Jones 2012). It was found that their was a unidentified nurse working in the in the surgical unit who failed to do a correct count on the sponges before surgery and after. Further more she forged a technician signature on the operating room record who was suppose to do the count himself, but failed to do his job. The doctor himself did not follow the correct procedure, and stuffed a 4 by 4 saturated sponge with anesthetic inside of the
Since 2011, I had been actively involved in the national medical student organization called ISMKI. Then in 2013, I was chosen as a representative from my organization in multi-professional health student forum called HPEQ Student. From that forum, we worked together toward our common goals to implement IPC and to increase the health service quality. This goal is surely challenging since there are a lot of barriers and stigma between each health professional. One of the programs that we proposed was a National Health Collaboration (NHC) conference, which I involved as the organizing committee. We socialize the IPC issue to health student in this conference. Another program was an advocacy about IPC to the policy-maker such as health minister
Post the health indicator you would consider for the program you will be developing from Healthy People.gov. Include in your post your initial thoughts on the type of program you would like to implement.
Continuing the support of the agency National Institutes of Health by its umbrella The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services supports one of the main goals in their strategic plan, Advance Scientific Knowledge and Innovation. "When health is absent Wisdom cannot reveal itself, Art cannot become manifest, Strength cannot be exerted, Wealth is useless and Reason is powerless." (Herophilies, 300 B.C.)
The study was a secondary data analysis of existing patient records (record-based). This study made use of the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) Database .The NIS database was developed by the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP). The NIS is the largest inpatient care database in the United States containing data from 1988 to 2013. It includes about 98 percent of all hospital discharges in the United States. NIS is a sample of hospitals that comprises approximately 95 percent of all hospital discharges in the United States. It consists of over hundred nonclinical and clinical data elements for each hospital stay. The four most recent available calendar years (2010 to 2013) were obtained for the analyses of cervical cancer mortality
