Nationality has an impact on respect in a way that people tend to refer to others by their countries of origin. Depending on how good one is at performing a certain task both in school and at work which draws one respect from peers. For example based on data from the Association of American Medical Colleges(AAMC) ,women make up a larger percentage of residents in pediatrics compared to men that specialize more in surgery. The same gender-bias in some male-dominated specialties may deter female residents from pursuing them. “Orthopedic surgery is still very male dominated and it’s one of those fields where the culture of the specialty reflects a ‘boy’s boy’ image,” said Dr Ring. “I don’t think many women have known how to fit into that group
Minority care quality in California is rapidly declining because of the shortage of minority physicians in practice. One might wonder why such a problem exists, but differences in cultural and ethnic identities between doctors and patients alter the quality of care because of preexisting stereotypes, health disparities, and linguistic gaps. Minorities in California consist of those other than non-Hispanic whites, and with their growing presence, they are becoming further underrepresented in the medical field. The foundation of this problem is the declining number of minority students attending medical school and the lack of diversity in medical school faculty. With a greater ethnic diversity in the medical field, comes a better quality of
In America gender is seen as a dichotomy, either male or female. Society has gendered everything from colors, to adjectives (strong for males, weak for females), to even occupations. Historically, science, technology, engineering, and math, also known as STEM, have had a masculine connotation connected to it. Which helps explain why elite white men have predominately occupied the STEM fields (Borum and Walker 2012). Eventually, women started to integrate into STEM, but not nearly in the quantities as men, this created the gender gap. The gender gap does vary based on which field you look at, and at more advanced levels in STEM, as well as race (O’Brien 2015). Not only is there a gender and race gap between men and women, but these ring true
My name is Marica Hixon I graduated from Ohio State one year go and I am now an orthopedic surgeon at Beaumont Hospital in Novi Michigan. If you are an orthopedic surgeon you can either work at a hospital, medical clinics or can run your own practices throughout groups. As an orthopedic surgeon you see many surgeries on a daily basis. During the work hours in the week, I’m at work from 40 to 60 hours. On the weekends I can work at least 20 hours in the operating room. Majority of the time, I’m on call to the emergency room. The time that I’m at work I am most likely on my feet. Before a surgery it’s then required to scrub in. Scrubbing in is when you wash your hands and forearms very precisely before a surgery. Usually you use a brush to help
A surgeon is a type of doctor that helps cure and prevent sickness through surgery. There are many types of surgeons such as a general surgeon who focuses mainly on the abdomen. After that there is the orthopedic surgeon who focuses mainly on injuries affecting muscles, bones, joints, and nerves. Another surgeon is a neurological surgeon who focuses on the nervous system and diseases that effect it. In addition, there is the cosmetic or plastic surgeon who focuses on reconstruction, replacing, and repairing damaged and defective tissue. Additionally, there is the ophthalmologists who mainly focus on the eye and vision. In addition, there is the thoracic surgeon who treat conditions effecting organs inside the chest such as the heart and lungs. Another example of a surgeon is the vascular surgeon whom focus mainly on unblocking arteries and managing aneurysms. Then there is the urologist which treats and diagnoses patients that have urinary and genital organ disorders. Finally, there is the pediatric surgeon which focuses on children and newborns.
Orthopaedic surgeons rely on total joint replacements to repair damaged knees and hips. Doctors, nurses, and patients view the procedures as common and effective, and know that successful surgeries have great benefits. Successful operations relieve patients’ pain and to improve the quality of life for patients and families. Should one of the surgeries result in infection, however, the consequences can be harsh, including serious illness, additional surgeries, or even deadly complications.
Simpson contrasted the experiences of male flight attendants, nurses, librarians, and primary school teachers with the theory that minority workers are generally penalized by increased performance expectations, isolation, and limited opportunities for promotion (352). Researchers have shown that women in a male-dominated workplace suffer from what has been called 'token' status. A token female employee's high visibility often increases the pressure to perform at levels above their male peers, their isolation as male employees exaggerate the differences between men and women, and stereotyping which tends to limit opportunities for advancement.
Orthopedic surgeons are medical doctors that are trained and specialized in treating the musculoskeletal system. They evaluate and treat problems in the joints, ligaments, and bones in the body. orthopedic surgeons can treat adults and children. Since the beginning of the field of orthopedics, specialists have learned to treat children suffering with spine and limb deformities. In Greek, the roots ortho and pais mean straight and child respectively. Some early orthopaedists would use treatment such as braces to try to make the child "straight." orthopedic surgeons may specialize in areas such as sports medicine or hand surgery.
A series of unexpected events led me to become an orthopaedic surgeon. In the fourth year of medical school, I began to observe the orthopaedic surgeries. My supervisors were using their dexterity to repair the fractures in the bone. After the operation and rehabilitation, patients would be gaining their movement back. It was a process that took time and work, but the end result was outstanding. I would care for patients who once came in pain, watching them leave with smiles on their faces. I wanted to improve the quality of life of my patients as well.
I am legally classified as Disabled and qualified to have Pennsylvania Handicapped Tag for my car and when traveling for the reason that I had five orthopedic surgeries on the legs (and I may need two more). Truly, I believe that I am Blessed by the Almighty and my Ancestors not to be in a wheel chair after my five critical hip and knee operations. One and two are enough, but five surgeries, no surgeries are guaranteed by hospitals or doctors. They do the best with their ability, knowledge and experience. Medical mistakes and malpractice are illegal and civil lawsuits, of course.
The American Nursing Association (ANA) and International Council of Nursing (ICN) focus on different aspects within diversity. For instance, the ANA supports the notion that African and Hispanic Americans as well as Native Americans are grossly underrepresented in this profession (Glazer, Clark, & Bankston, 2015). The continuing argument is that the diverse patient population should have an equally varying workforce to ensure the best culturally competent care. To address this issue, change must be made within the admission process, which encompasses school admission, workforce, and
During High School there are many possible ways to prepare for being an orthopedic surgeon. It is important to take advanced math and science classes during high school. Their are not really any jobs that a high school student can do to prepare themselves for becoming an orthopedic surgeon, but they can do volunteer work. In order to show that they have pre medical interests, many people interested in entering the medical field will volunteer at a hospital and do things that are in a medical setting. It is important to work on certain skills in high school. One such skill is working well under pressure. This is essential, as it is necessary to stay calm while performing a surgery, as they do not want to make a mistake. In addition to being calm under pressure, it is also important to remain emotionally stable for the same reason. Also they don’t want to scare a patient or their family by being overly emotional about something. It is also very important to stay self motivated. “They must not only be prepared to spend many years at school preparing for a career as a surgeon, but also to spend long hours on the job once they have their medical degree” (“Orthopedic Surgeon”). Another skill that is needed is having strong communication skills. Orthopedic surgeons have to be able to communicate with the rest of the hospital staff about their patient. Finally, they have to be able to
Although women have the capability of identical execution with equivalent aptitude and accomplishment in every undertaking occupied in by men, the subject of sex discrimination still confines many. Sex discrimination, though predominantly an issue for females, can occasionally be

In certain situations male patients would feel more comfortable with a male nurse performing a certain task, rather than a female nurse, as it would feel more comfortable for the male patient to have a nurse of the same gender. With more male nurses this would be a lot easier in many different hospitals allowing patients of both genders to have a better sense of comfort. However, in order for there to be more male nurses, there needs to be a better recruitment of males into the field of nursing. Many men feel as if there are many barriers separating males and females in nursing. “The profession would benefit greatly by making recruitment of men a priority” (O’Lynn 230). With more men being recruited into the profession, it would give males a good career with a steady income. Along with the great demand for male nurses, comes higher pay along with more specialties open to men. With more men entering the nursing field, male patients can avoid the embracement of certain things that they have to go through when in a hospital and being cared for by a female
