The cell phone, perhaps the most important invention of the twenty-first century, revolutionized the way we communicate by making it more mobile. However, even with its accomplishments why has it become so popular in the past few decades. The simple answer is that cell phones have become a near essential part of everyday life, as they allow for parents to instantly communicate with children, connect to the internet a for near infinite amount of knowledge, keep up with people across the world through talk and text, and to entertain the individual when they are feeling bored. However, despite all the good that cell phones can do which makes them so essential there are several effects of this which must be addressed. The effects which will be addressed are distracting the individual, connecting people to the world, and social isolation. The sharp rise in cell phone related crashes in recent years is an effect of increased communication within individuals. In the last decade an epidemic that researchers have been able to observe is that of texting and driving. Texting and driving occurs when someone checks their phone and attempts to send a text. This often results in disastrous consequences as in 2011, at least 23% of auto collisions involved cell phones, which is equivalent to 1.3 million crashes (Texting and Distracted Driving). The increase in communication due to cell phones is largely to blame for these accidents as individuals have a now have a hard time disconnecting,
Ever since cellular phones first came to be in the 1980’s, people have been using them to carry out conversations, ask questions, or meet new people. Once cell phones reached a height of internet capabilities, smartphones were created. Cell phones from then on ended up changing society entirely. This research study could explain the effects of cell phones from their creation to today’s society and how they would influence the future generations. This study would also focus on the evolution of how cell phones become even more involved in our lives and how they truly influence us. This study would be beneficial to our generation by teaching them how technology is expanding, and the lives of humans will get easier as time goes on. Furthermore, this study would be beneficial as a report on how cell phones came to be in our history. This would expectedly heighten the awareness of society to how different our lives could be according to technological development. To the future researchers, this study could be used as a base for data in future development into how society adapts.
In the world today, cell phones are being used more than ever before. Everywhere you go, cell phones are present, and its users range from almost all ages. There is no avoiding the fact that cell phones are a prominent way of communication. They have become so influential in peoples’ everyday lives that many can not imagine life without a cell phone. Cell phones are not necessarily a bad tool, when used in moderation. Cell phones are changing the way people communicate and the way they live their everyday lives.
Automobile crashes as a result of texting while driving is an epidemic that has taken over the nation in the past years. In today’s society, people have become more and more dependent on technology as everyday uses. How many can honestly say that they have text and driven? How many have had to swerve, stop on the brakes or almost gotten into an accident because of it? Texting while driving is the most common thing that almost everyone has done or seen. The main issue and threat is that people think they can safely type on their phone while driving; while others simply do not think there is any real danger with that act. Today, it is all about convenience; but the cost for this convenience can be very deadly. Studies show that any
In the modern-day world, there are about 6.8 billion cell phone subscriptions. Mobile telephones have really changed the way we do things in our daily life. Before cell phones were invented individuals were more interactive with each other. In the late 1900’s, Martin Cooper invented the first mobile telephone. Today we have a variety of mobile phones to choose from such as Apple and Samsung. Widespread cell phone use has definitely affected the world negatively because it is a distraction, can be harmful, and addicting.
This paper will also mention real life experiences with people who have either been the victim or the cause of an accident in which texting while driving was the reason for it. I end my paper with a section in which the purpose of it is to question yourself and others as to if texting while driving is really worth the risk of potentially killing a person or even a whole family. Conclusively, I want a discussion to arise in the future from this paper pertaining to new ideas or innovations that could potentially diminish or even relinquish casualties and damages, both emotional and physical, resulting from texting and driving.
As time advances, so does technology. Advances in technology reveal a variety of problems throughout lives all around the world. Texting and driving is at an all time high, and although society welcomes a technology-centered future, it inevitably endures repercussions as well. The use of cell phones while driving has been studied persistently throughout the past couple of years at universities across the United States. Statistics show that texting and driving has an excessively negative impact within various aspects of our society including the main aspect: safety.
Today, one of the major sources of automobile accidents is distracted driving due to cell phone use. Driver distraction can be defined as “the diversion of attention away from activities critical for the safe driving toward a competing activity” (Young 3). The dangers of driving while using a cell phone cannot be overstated, but drivers still use their cell phones even though they are illegal. According to a survey, “About 2 out of 10 (18%) report that they have sent text messages or emails while driving; about half (49%) of those 21 to 24 year olds report doing so” (NHTSA). This indicates that millions of people use their cell phones while driving everyday, and with the increased availability and affordability of cell phones, the risk can only increase. In this paper the topics that will be discussed in regard to cell phone use while driving include the brief history of the cell phone, talking while driving, texting while driving, the part of the community most affected by using cell phones, alternatives to reduce incidents, the laws that have been enacted, and the organizations that endorse no texting while driving.
Indeed, texting and driving is a growing problem in our country. According to Pascual-Ferrá, Liu and Beatty (2012), 25 percent of vehicular accidents, that is, 1.6 million accidents, every year can be attributed to cellphone use and texting while driving. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration also stated that “teens are six times more likely to crash while dialing a cellphone and 23 times more likely to crash while texting” (Mays, 2014). The reaction time of a person who is texting while driving becomes similar to that of a 70-year old who is driving without a cellphone (Mays, 2014). Pascual-Ferrá, Liu and Beatty (2012) also found that the effects of texting and
Texting while driving has become a major concern worldwide due to its highly probable fatal results. Texting while driving can be defined as the act of communicating on a mobile communication device via short message services or electronic mails. Since the early years of the 21st century, mobile communication devices have gained wide usage and have almost become the standard mode of communication. Their use has brought undesired concerns. It has been established that a large number of the accidents that occur on roads worldwide is as a result of low or lack of attention by the driver. There have been different campaigns aimed at sensitizing the public on the risks of texting while driving.
As many as 281,000 to 786,000 crashes in 2012 may involve text messaging, according to the estimate of the United States National Safety Council (2012). Pickrell and Ye (2013) found 0.9% of drivers were visibly manipulating hand-held devices while driving in 2010, and this percentage increased to 1.3 percent in 2011. There are many teenagers, even adults that feel like sending a text message while they are driving is “no big deal.” When in reality, it is a huge deal. Many people do not realize what a risk they are taking by sending a text message while operating a motor vehicle. According to The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), each day in the United States, more than 9 people are killed and more than 1,153 people are
Car Accidents happen every day, every month, every year. They never seem to stop or slow down. “Over 2.5 million people are involved in road accidents each year. Of these 1.6 million are caused from texting and driving. That is 64% of all road accidents in the United States.”, (Luke Ameen). Before cell phones, there were not as many road accidents as there are every single day. On average around 3,287 car accidents are caused each day. We have become more consumed with technology overtime and people think that it is more important to reply rather than staying conscious of their surroundings. Everyone says that driving is easy to do but, what people don’t realize is how dangerous it can be. You might not be the driver that is texting but, it is the people around you that are.
Technology has advanced over the years, causing our lifestyle to change drastically and head down a new path. With these advances in technology, the cell phone appeared and has evolved throughout time. The cell phone has become a necessity to many. All ages use this mobile device for either personal or business use. Higgins states that the amount of cell phones active has increased from “one billion in 2000 to 6 billion.” Although cell phones play an important role in the lives of many, the negative possibilities could cause destruction to our society.
This is the day and age when technology is developing faster than ever before, people are assimilating into the world of technology. We, as an American, are tremendously addicted to technology that is even costing us our own lives and as a further matter, someone else life. Since technology became our everyday necessity, it seems impossible to even live a day without it. Out of every vicious addiction, some are far more dangerous than others. One of them is texting while driving. Ever since texting became a part of human norms, millions of car accidents have happened and “the average risk of getting into a collision was four times as great when people were on the phone than when they were not” (Seppa). Car accident affects not only the one
Texting and driving is one of the leading causes of deaths. Besides drunk driving. There is also an overwhelming amount of texting in driving right now “A McKinsey study released this week finds that 35% of smartphone owners use their phones while driving”. (The Rosen News Team , 2013)
Texting while driving has developed into a growing danger amongst many drivers. Driving requires full attention at all times; moreover, texting impairs the drivers’ abilities, causing his or her reaction time to decrease dramatically. When his or her full attention is on the phone rather than on the road, the driver is unable to witness the traffic; therefore, causing a collision due to lack of focus. When both hands are on the phone texting, the driver easily loses control of the vehicle because of his or her inability to concentrate on the road. Improper driving is an unnecessary risk to
