The more advanced technology becomes, the more of a toll it has on our daily lives. Lee Siegel states that “we shop, work, play, love, search for information, seek to communicate with each other and sometimes with the world online. We spend more time online than ever before. Yet people are not arguing about this startling new condition." It is my belief that due to the control technology has taken over society, technology is ultimately detrimental to society as a whole.

The effects of technology usage have long been a topic of debate, with the negative consequences often being brought up. Authors such as Robert Samuels, Alison Gopnik, Nicholas Carr, Gary Small and Vorgan Gigi have all addressed this topic in their own articles. In Samuels’ “Breaking Down Borders: How Technology Transforms the Private and Public Realms,” he discusses the creation of private bubbles in public spaces due to technology, and the consequent alienation of others. “Diagnosing the Digital Revolution” by Gopnik argues that the habits that tech users have today have always existed, while Carr’s “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” states that technology is actively changing the way humans think. “Meet Your iBrain” by Gigi and Small covers how technology affects brains and alters them. This paper will use the articles and an interview with a peer to analyze the perceived negative effects of using technology, particularly worse memory, shorter attention span, exacerbation of bad habits, and shifting emotions.

In today’s world, as technology is advancing around us, some of the major effects that can be seen are medical technology advances, ease of communication with the growing technology, and the negative effect on our body.

The Social Impact of technology has changed the way we live our daily lives. It has recreated the way we communicate using Social Media, the devices we use on a daily basis, and the barriers we are breaking to help the elderly and people with disabilities. With all of these great accomplishments in technology we still find ourselves overlooking how this new technology affects the people around us. Computers are a vital part of many different jobs and activities globally, however there are many health issues that are caused and associated with working with computers. The over use of computers can cause eye strain. By forcing your eyes to focus at for a long period of time at the distance cause fatigue. Structurally, the human eye prefers to look at objects that are more than six metres away, so any work executed close up puts additional strain on the eye muscles. The light of the computer can also cause fatigue, the symptoms that can occur are blurred vision, temporary inability to focus on far away objects and headaches. By making sure the main source of light in a room is not shining straight onto your face or directly onto the computer screen, this helps to prevent eye strain. If using the computer at night in a dark room the computer screens brightness is turned down to a minimum. Also, tilting the screen slightly to avoid reflections or glace and insures the computer screen is not too close to your face. It is advised that people take regular breaks during a long period of focused work e.g. every hour. It is important that regular eye examinations are attended to check that any blurred vision, headaches and any other related problems are not caused by a primary problem, which is then made worse by the over use of a computer. To be honest Technology has proven to us, we cannot live without it. In this 20th century everyone on the world enjoys technology. Some of the countries even look for idea’s to make cutting edge technology. As a teenager, I spend more time on computer/Laptop, smartphone and some other devices. “In the United States, for instance, gross domestic product per capita tripled from 1950 to 2000”. Technology have grown from a simple calculator to a machine who can think it self. Computers/laptops and smartphones have become common thing for everyone in other words “it’s a must have”. Everyone should have one or we see them as an outsider or outcast. Technology has always impacted us in many ways for example- students, teachers, and businesses owners. I have couple of examples and it will show some of the earliest technology we had, and how far we have come from our past.

Mobile devices affect teens in a negative way. Numerous teens struggle academically because of their cell phone usage. Most teens don’t know the misfortune that they can get into if they don’t know how to use the internet right. As a result, they fall into poor habits, feeling compelled to check their social media even when it’s unnecessary. In addition to bad habits, “Smartphones present a huge distraction in classrooms, where teachers are forced to compete for students’ attention” (Katz). This can lead to using wrong websites and getting in contact with strangers. When young adults are constantly on their cellular devices, they experience negative effects of social media and other websites that they use as a distraction.

Technology has played a huge role in the lives of people and it continues to grow. Many people think that technology has negative impacts on individuals and families while others think that there are positives in having technology. Including technology in daily lives is important because it can make life simpler. With technology, everything is at your fingertips and can be easily accessed. The objective of this paper is to describe a negative impact of technology, a positive impact, and clearly discuss how technology is helpful for families.

The extreme advancements and the more accessible increase in technology has a choice to become a positive or negative impact nearly every day. The ability for people to quickly learn how to use an iPhone the day it comes out isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but when they are handed an unfamiliar assignment, they may fail to pick up on it as fast.
