Several factors can be attributed to the construction of the modern world in the past few hundred years. However, technological changes can be said to have had the most substantial contribution. These changes became prominent during the industrial revolution throughout the eighteenth century. Technology led to a new mode of human existence, namely, the industrial civilization. Television viewing is not regarded as having any negative effect, apart from when television is watched for more than ten hours a week. However, today, children spent most of their time watching television rather than doing school assignments, homework, or other productive things. This tends to have a tremendous impact on their social life because they reserve little time for social interactions with friends. It has also been proved that there is a relationship between measures of media use and school performance. Children who were found to be more intelligent were those used to watching less television. Generally these children watch television unaided and are exposed to adult rated content. Such content instigates sexual related concepts among these youngsters who do not know anything about adult life. Watching too much television also leads to health problems such as obesity. This is because television displaces physical activities which help in weight loss. It is no wonder then, that Americans are getting more and more obese everyday.(Sparks, 85) Other types of media, the internet, have a negative effect especially on the young people due to exposure to pornography which is readily available online. This leads to engagement of youngsters in early sexual behaviors. “Television has changed the American child from an irresistable force to an immovable object.” (Peter). There was a time when all children wanted to do was to run, play, explore, and be adventurous. As time evolved, children have found more interest in television. Statistics show that a child spends 900 hours per year in school,and they spend 1,200 hours per year watching television. When asked to choose between watching T.V. and spending time with their families fifty-four percent of four to six year olds voted they would prefer to watch television. Television has changed the mindset of children over the years it has been proven that the more programs they watch, the more harmful it is to their brain development. T.V.

Compare these statistics to the early 2000s when 5 in 10 Americans were online and in 2011, when only 35% of Americans owned a smartphone. Just a few decades ago, the technology we have today were merely ideas in science fiction novels or gadgets seen in a futuristic movie. In the article “TV’s Negative Influence on Kids Reaffirmed” by Jeffrey M. McCall, he addresses the issue of how TV has a negative influence on children. McCall states that young children and toddler’s cognitive ability do not develop as well when they have a television in the background while they are playing and interacting. McCall also argues that TV has a very influential role in the teenage pregnancy rate and how early teens become sexually active. To further prove his point, McCall proclaims that children and teens that are exposed to large amounts of television and video games become socially awkward and have issues interacting in society. McCall also says that the networks are rating their own programs carelessly, which is leading to shows that should be restricted by a V-chip being watched by children, rendering the restricting system null and void.
The effects of technology usage have long been a topic of debate, with the negative consequences often being brought up. Authors such as Robert Samuels, Alison Gopnik, Nicholas Carr, Gary Small and Vorgan Gigi have all addressed this topic in their own articles. In Samuels’ “Breaking Down Borders: How Technology Transforms the Private and Public Realms,” he discusses the creation of private bubbles in public spaces due to technology, and the consequent alienation of others. “Diagnosing the Digital Revolution” by Gopnik argues that the habits that tech users have today have always existed, while Carr’s “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” states that technology is actively changing the way humans think. “Meet Your iBrain” by Gigi and Small covers how technology affects brains and alters them. This paper will use the articles and an interview with a peer to analyze the perceived negative effects of using technology, particularly worse memory, shorter attention span, exacerbation of bad habits, and shifting emotions.
Since the industrial revolution, society has become more and more dependent on technology. So much so that we sometimes lack the willingness to think before we act. We become impatient if it takes more than a few seconds to download a copy of the morning news paper. We expect immediate responses to our email, and we expect someone to answer their cell phone whenever and wherever we call. “Industrialization resulted in rapid and sustained economic growth and a massive increase in consumer goods. The human race has gone through many changes throughout history and one of the greatest most crucial changes was Industrial Revolution. The First Industrial Revolution can go back to the 1790s, and is very interesting that how it was caused by a whole set of social and economic factors. Before the first industrial revolution, the economic surplus was almost zero and agriculture was the basic economic activity where populations were not even given a single opportunity to enjoy the benefits of higher living standards. The First Industrial Revolution was occurred in England between 1750 and 1850 where the transformation of Britain from a Neolithic nation into an industrious nation was seen. It came as an urgent and unexpected response to the rapid growth of population, introduction of many different laws England, and an increase in food production (Hooker, 1996). It spread very quickly throughout the world, introducing the modernization of agriculture and manufacturing of textile. The first revolution mainly focused on the production of new textile machinery, iron manufacturing, improved methods of coal production and various agriculture techniques.
Studying the effects of children watching television has been a popular field of research for many years and is becoming increasingly important as more of children’s time is spent on television. There are strong arguments for both the benefits and the detriments of television exposure. One of the most common arguments against television is the suggestion that it increases violence. Other cases for the negative effects include lowered self-esteem and increased materialism. Research supporting the benefits of television suggest an increase in pro-social behavior, tolerance of diversity, and an increase in general knowledge. Studies show that children spend an average of seven hours per day watching television or using another form of media (Strasburger, Jordan & Donnerstein, 2010). With such a significant amount of time being spent watching television, it is important to study the effects and use the information to optimize child development.
Add to this study a statistic from the Official Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics “75% of teenagers now own cell phones, 25% use them for social media, 54% use them for texting, and 24% of them use them for instant messaging” (Gwenn Schurgin O'Keeffe). We have an entire generation that is developing socially and emotionally while “plugged-in”. This negative effect is not only caused by just internet use and cell phones, our old friend the television is causing us harm as well. In today’s world, as technology is advancing around us, some of the major effects that can be seen are medical technology advances, ease of communication with the growing technology, and the negative effect on our body.
Television can be a powerful entertainment and education tool for children given the right programming. However, studies have shown that television, and media in general, can also have a very negative influence. Some studies indicate it can shorten attention span, distort body image, work in conjunction with other factors to escalate obesity, create fear, and increase aggressive and anti-social behaviors if exposure is unmonitored and unlimited.
In today's society there is no escape from technology. We are completely submerged in our iPhone, ipads, computers, and gaming systems. These gadgets give us the opportunity to be connected to each other and the rest of the world at all times. But, this is not a glorious step in history. Technology blinds us from the real world. As John Tudor said, “Technology makes it possible for people to gain control over everything, except technology.” We may run our lives with the help of our iPhones and computers, but do these forms of technology in turn control us? At first glance these new advances are greater steps to making our lives easier. But, when examined closely a large portion of technology is the cause of many problems in our society.
Technology has more negative effects on today’s society than positive. Due to technology in the past few decades Canine Shock Collars have been increasingly popular. Students in school pay more attention to texting than they do their classes. Violent addictive video games have made their way into American homes. Parents encourage their children to not text as much, but them to face the problem of constant communication. The Internet gives the students easier ways to cheat in school, and reinforces laziness. In an average lifetime, someone will spend about fifteen percent of their life in school; fifteen percent of their life spent sitting in desks, reading books, doing homework, and watching lectures. School is one of the biggest parts of a child’s life, and cannot afford to be distracted from by media. Children today will often spend more time interacting with media on a weekly basis more than anything else, save sleep. This can have serious repercussions on a child’s physical and mental condition (Canadian par. 4). A substantial number of children begin watching television at an earlier age and in greater amounts than what experts recommend.
