At most, it addresses the question of whether it leads to aggression, which I don't think it does." In this age of technology, it's very safe to say that a large majority of the world's population has played at least one video game. This can vary from playing games on console, like Xbox-One, Playstation 4, and for the older generation, the NES to playing mobile games like Tetris. There are many consoles that span from the creation of video games. This has opened opportunities to make several kind of games. These can vary from side-scrollers like Super Mario Bros. on the NES, to Role-playing games (RPG) like Final Fantasy IX on the Playstation 1. While this has caused some great games to surface, it has also allowed intense violence to be let into games. Parents and anti-gaming communities state that this is why kids can become violent. This is false, because violent games can be avoided to prevent this issue, and the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) has even made various precautions to make sure parents know what they're purchasing. Comprehensible symbols, detailed lists, and age restrictions prevents children from "becoming violent".

Laurie D. Berdahl, M.D. states that “I think that it’s good for people to understand that is at least 30 years of research that playing violent video games increases violent behavior in kids, she said “It’s no longer controversial. Basically, there’s solid research that even if someone doesn’t become a mass shooter, his or her reactions become more violent and aggressive. There is no longer any question.” There has been many studies into the effects of violent video games on the adolescent mind. Many of them have brought up some very important and very concerning questions. Am I a bad parent for letting my child play this violent video game? Will my child become a school shooter from playing this video game? These are some very important and vital questions to the crisis that is adolescents playing mature rated video games. The reason most parents do not want their children playing violent video games it that some parents do not want their children to grow up violent and hateful of people. Violent video games are not training kids to be murderers. The video game industries have been called against and blamed for making kids more aggressive and violent for years. Although recent studies show that violent video games have been useful for kids to get their anger out. Only some kids were found to be aggressive after violent video game play, but they had three specific traits that lead to this aggressive behavior (“Violent...). Not all kids are affected by violent video games, but people do not know this so they continue to blame video games for their kids bad behaviors. Aggressive behaviors do not come from video games, they come from the environment that the kids grew up around (“Do…).
Video games are getting extremely popular with the gaming community each year with popular titles like Call of Duty, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Grand Theft Auto V. Video games have become very popular they have become a sport known as e-sports in which players compete in a certain video game title for the prize pool with the biggest prize pool being $20 million. Although considering the majority of kids are now getting into these popular violent video games titles, people are having their concerns if video games are influencing children negatively. There have been studies to find out if video games do really influence violence in kids but have not been found because the truth is it does not. Violence in video games does not cause kids to be violent because a majority of kids already play violent video games, video games have ratings with content and parents have control on what kids play.
There have been multiple studies and research cases, in recent years, that point the finger at violent video games as the cause of increased aggressive behavior in children. These studies claim to provide irrefutable evidence of the influence violent video games have on impressionable young people, such as increasing aggressive behavior and violent tendencies. But in all the research and studies done on the effects violent video games, there have been two recurring factors, a predetermined outcome of negativity, and a lack of long term, solid evidence to support their results. Violent video games do no increase aggressive behavior in children, as these studies would like to lead you to believe. These studies are asking the wrong question in the pursuit of a desired outcome. Aggressive children are simply more likely to play violent video games. Video games are not the first medium of entertainment to be put to this test either. With “a traditional game console in 51 percent of U.S. households” we would be experiencing bedlam nationwide if the findings from these studies were in fact true (North). In addition, for every “reputable” study that concludes violent video games cause increased aggression, there is a study against it showing the flaws in the research, or proof of bias on the part of the researchers, proving that a predetermined outcome was expected. Some of the studies even had researchers on the teams voice their disapproval of the outcome because of a perceived
Yesterday a child killed 16 people and injured many more in less than 20 mins. He is just a child, how is this possible? Video games have become more popular with children, and adolescents, copious amount of video games exposes children to violence. Did you know that children and adolescents who played more violent games were most likely to report aggressive cognitions and behaviors? (Toppo 2015) In today's society, violent video games such as “Call of Duty” have a negative effect on health, growth and development, and posing a bad influence for children and young adults. Due to the advancing technology video games are becoming more popular, therefore having a negative effect on children and young adults.
Do you ever just think and realize if your child is surrounded by violence it will end up being someone who is very violent? In a harvard medical article it explains both the AAP and AACAP reason that children learn by observing, mimicking, and adopting behaviors which is a simple principle of a social learning theory (“Violent Video Game”). Which can lead for a child to observe a violent video game and later on mimick the violent parts of the game into reality. These organizations show concern that exposure to destructive behavior or violence in video games and other media may, over time, desensitize youths by numbing them emotionally, cause nightmares and sleep problems, impair school performance, and lead to aggressive behavior and bullying.(“Violent Video Game”) If we let children get used to videogames that include violence in their everyday life they will end up being influenced to do brutal crimes. Another part of the harvard article is a 2001 report of the U.S. Surgeon General on the topic of youth violence made a similar wisdom. They have discovered an association between violent video games and increased aggressive thinking and behavior in youths; some casual bystanders go further, guessing that tragic school shootings have a link between games and real-world aggression.(“Violent Video Games”) Games like call of duty, grand theft auto, and even battle field may sometime lead to an addiction towards the game and some people just want to end up actually doing it in
Approximately 115 million Americans play video games on a daily basis, 4 out of 5 American households admitted to owning a gaming system in 2016. Video Games have become a part of many American’s daily routine. Parents especially have had many concerns pertaining to this gaming behavior to determine if video games are safe for their children especially with the release of violent games such as Grand Theft Auto, where the main plot focuses around gang violence, drugs and alcohol and explicit language. Society has become concerned about the possible effects playing video games can have on a person’s behavior. The media has linked many shooting event for example, the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting. Where the gunman was an avid gamer who
The graphics in games now make the game almost look as if it were real life. That has brought the video game industry a lot more players and part of those new gamers are young children. The issue is when a child is presented with a violent video game that has really good graphics the child has a better understanding of what is going on in that game. Because children can relate what is going in the video game to the real world, that leads children to believe that the actions being done in that video game are accepted in society. If the children believe that its right from them to do violent actions that they learned from the game there attitude starts becoming more aggressive. Anne Harding says “children who watch violence in the media can internalize the message that the world is a hostile place...”.
Violent video games have been shown to increase aggressive behaviors (Anderson), whereas prosocial video games have been shown to increase empathy (Greitemeyer & Osswald). The context of video games might affect teens moderately for example, playing fast-paced video games may have positive effects on visual skills, such as faster reaction times, and improved target localization (Achtman, Green, & Bavelier; Green & Bavelier). Numerous amount of research prove that violent video games have a negative effect increasing the aggression on both short and long terms (Anderson & Dill; Anderson, Gentile, & Buckley; Anderson). Researchers believe that the aggression caused by violent video game effects depends on a real-life situation. For example, teens that do not associate with violence will not be as effected as teens that are associated with violence, violent video game have more positive attitudes toward violence without consequences in the game then that in real life “If you shoot somebody in one of these games, you don’t go to jail, you don’t get penalized in some way — you get extra points!” (Dr. Phil) this doesn’t mean that your child will go out into the “real”
It is still being debated whether or not video games can lead to one being more aggressive than usual. Constantly playing a violent video game that has characters showing acts of violence can lead to one learning and practicing these acts of violence. Many researchers have talked about the effects of viewing violence in the media and how it affects children. Videogames takes this to another level, where the children are actually participating in being violent in the video games. There are many games out there that allow the children to play gun bearing characters who can kill anyone that they want, steal cars, and commit all sorts of heinous activities. These games can have negative implications on the children as
What is the first thing to pop into one’s head when they think about video games? Most people think of fun they have while playing. Or it could be the cost of the new game or the device to go with it. It could also be the violence a game offers or the rating given to the game. Many people play and enjoy video games today, people don’t necessarily have to play video games at home anymore either. Games can be downloaded to devices such as cell phones or tablets that can be taken on the go. When taking a step back to look at the games that are played more often one is shocked at the content some games have and the language and violence involved in the games played. This paper will be outlining the different effects of video games whether good
