As a result of the attacks, more than 3,000 people were killed, including 343 New York City firefighters. 23 New York City police officers killed, 37 Port Authority police officers killed, and thousands treated for injuries – these are other tragic happenings on the day of the attacks. In the 12 years since the terrorist attacks on the world trade towers in New York city, thousands of hours of research and interviews has been conducted, scores of books have been written, and countless documentaries and films have been produced in an effort to help us understand how and why terrorists were able to carry out the massacre of nearly 3500 people. Despite the plethora of religious and nonreligious beliefs represented by the friends and family of those who died, one universal belief binds them all: the belief that an unspeakable act of cruelty has changed our nation and our people for all time. The name ascribed to this act of terrorism is debated widely. Some call it evil. Others call it nothing more than supreme cruelty.

Terrorist attacks have increased over the last twenty years, but one of the most remembered is the attack on the World Trade Center in New York City. It happened on September 11, 2001; and is commonly referred to as 9/11. Americans grow up learning details about 9/11; but rarely do we learn about a personal experience. In Adam Mayblum’s email “The Price We Pay,” he tells the story of what happened to him, and others around him on the day of September 11, 2001. Mayblum explains in paragraph ten “If you want to kill us, leave us alone because we will do it by ourselves. If you want to make us stronger, attack and we unite.” He made an excellent point with that statement, because he is right. He provides us with imagery, thoughts on terrorism, and strong use of emotions throughout the story that brings us a very well written narrative.

The terrorist responsible for this attack is Timothy McVeigh. Months before the bombing, McVeigh, along with his accomplice Terry Nichols, was believed to be involved in an “anti-government militia group” (Casey 3). McVeigh believed the government was devising a plan to deprive him and as well as the rest of his country of their rights as Americans to bear arms (Casey).

Two airplanes crashed into the two twin towers in New York City, one slammed into the west side of the Pentagon military headquarters, and the last one crashed into a rural field in Pennsylvania. It was believed that the fourth plane’s intended target was the White House or the Capitol. At 8:45 a.m. the first plane hit the North Tower, instantly killing hundreds and trapping hundreds and trapping hundreds on higher floors. At 9:03 a.m. a second plane struck the South Tower. Minutes later, the buildings collapsed, one after another, leaving heat and debris to billow throughout the city. The temperature could be felt miles away and the suffocating debris was impossible to withstand. People were covered from head to toe with ashes and dying from its effects to the body. It was our darkest hour and we could only turn towards each other for a helping hand and shoulder to cry on. The steady, serene debris continued to fall and darkness filled the sky. Time seemed to slow down, and we felt hopeless, for there was nothing we could do to bring back the thousands of lives taken

On April 19, 1995, Timothy McVeigh set off a truck bomb outside of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The attack under McVeigh left 168 people dead and more than 650 people injured. More than 300 buildings surrounding the area were damaged due to the explosion. “Until September 11, 2001, the Oklahoma City bombing was the worst terrorist attack to take place on U.S. soil” (http://www.history.com/topics/oklahoma-city-bombing). This bombing was a major eye opener to the US.

On September 11, 2011, there were four terrorist attacks by the Islamic terrorist group known as al-Qaeda. It was a series of suicide attacks targeting United States landmarks. People were killed within three different situations on that day; when the hijackers crashed into each tower of the World Trade Center in New York City, when a plane crashed into the Pentagon in Washington D.C, and when a plane flew into a field in Shanksville, PA. Over 3,000 people were killed during all the attacks, including more than 400 police officers and rescue workers. Only six people in the World Trade Center survived and there were over 10,000 people injured (National September 11 Memorial & Museum).

Another terrorist attack that was recently was the Manhattan attack. On October 31,2017 a 29-year-old male named Sayfullo Habibullaevic Saipov rented a pick-up truck and drove down a bicycle path near the World Trade Center. He killed 8 people and injured 11 others. This attack was named the deadliest attack since 9/11 back in 2001. The authority found a note near the truck saying the attack was made for ISIS. He was from Uzbekistan in Central Asia but had been living in the US since 2010. Could you imagine just riding your bicycle on a path or even walking it and the next thing you see is a truck running people over. I know I could not imagine it even thinking about it is a scary thought.

Imagine a cloud of black smoke covering the sky of your hometown or having to make the choice if you should jump to your death out of a skyscraper because if you didn’t, then you would burn alive. Imagine calling your husband while on a plane while knowing that will be the last time you tell him you love him. Imagine the fear you would feel not knowing if your loved ones survived a terrorist attack. This nightmare on an imaginations became a terrible reality for New Yorkers and American citizens. On September 11, 2001, four aircrafts were hijacked by Al-Qaeda terrorists. Two of the aircrafts flew into the twin towers in New York City, one aircraft crashed into the Pentagon, and the fourth aircraft crashed into a field in Pennsylvania. These terrorist attacks that took place on September 11 resulted in many casualties, an increase in airport security, and the United States invading Afghanistan and the Middle East.

Since the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln, approximately 330 terrorist attacks have occurred on American soil. The number includes successful and failed attacks from President Lincoln’s assassination until a New York incident with a van running down pedestrians on October 31, 2017. The results also exclude attacks deemed “criminal incidents” and accidents. Of course, not all of the attacks were at the same magnitude of the four coordinated attacks on September 11, 2001. Also, those behind the attacks vary greatly in ethnicity, religion, and background.
