RAY RICE CASE STUDY
On September 8th 2014 NFL team, Baltimore Ravens terminated Ray Rice’s contract after he was captured via elevator surveillance assaulting his then fiancée, now wife in February. The video outraged the nation and the public questioned NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell’s knowledge of the entire situation. In turn, the NFL gave him the light punishment of a two game suspension. Many people argued that although Goodell previously issued much heavier fines for issues such as substance abuse (Elliot, 2014). Once the story reached the light, the social media outrage was immediate. All popular social media platforms including Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter became populated by people expressing their frustrations over the situation.

He should also disclose the fact that as soon the video was made public, he held short, emergency meeting with the other Baltimore Ravens owners and they unanimously decided to cut Rice from the team.
He should also explain that the Ravens and the NFL as a whole organization would be moving forward to put in place domestic policy that all players must adhere to in order to play in the league. The new policy is the result of numerous meetings over several months among active and inactive players, and advocates for sexual assault and domestic violence (NFL, 2014).
The new policy lays out the disciplinary actions to be taken where there is an incident that needs to be investigated including: counseling for the victims and violators, independent investigators, and a complete list of forbidden conduct (NFL, 2014). Bisciotti can close the letter by stating that they have learned from this incident and how sorry he is to have let the public down. Social media never forgets and can be unforgiving. It does not matter if the situation involves celebrities, athletes, or international corporations, no one is immune from the court of public
If Rice was convicted, he would face up to five years in jail rather than a fine. Two months after his incident, Rice was accepted into a pretrial intervention program focused on rehabilitation (Elliott). As a result, Rice’s case never went to trial, and his aggravated assault charge would be dropped if he completed the program. Rice was originally suspended for two games without pay and fined $58,000 because of his aggravated assault charge but then he was suspended for six games due to the NFL’s policy on assault, battery, domestic violence and sexual assault (Elliott). Ray Rice will likely never play another game in an NFL uniform because of the fact that he was caught on camera abusing his wife (Tyler).
This case opened up more suspicion and also caused an effect on people regarding the hidden information that the NFl
Though this NFL conduct is in the light, it is unnecessary because the U.S. criminal justice system has the ability to end the professional sports careers of society’s worst criminals. Everyone asked themselves how could such a successful, talented person throw their opportunity away like this? Crimes from the past always catch up and come to light in the justice system. The NFL from now on is trying to prevent incidents like this from happening from making their off field standards stronger, and making consequences stronger that come with
Regarding the Dewan Smith-Williams case they’re goal to me is to protect the brand and not to protect the husband from himself and his high risk behavior to his wife and family because they didn’t want her to go to the police and keep it silent. I think Mrs. Williams made the right call to come forth and let it be known that spouses and/or partners are being treated unfair and something needs to be done. In my opinion, maybe if fans, anti-violence groups and women’s rights organizations get together and organize a plan that could force the owners to enact stronger and lasting reforms to improve the NFL actions and response to domestic abuse. They should make some amendments to the personal conduct policy. This topic relates to the discussion on human behavior because we want to know what causes the domestic abuse from the spouse especially if the abuser is in the NFL, a super star, and fame is growing and so forth. Find out what area of treatment and theory practice could be used to help the
Professional sports have been in the news for domestic violence for a really long time. Some that may come to your mind could be Ray Rice, Warren Moon, Greg Hardy, and Jose Reyes. Yes, three of these four players are in the National Football League (NFL), but that does not mean that only football players are the ones who have been doing this. The most recent one is Jose Reyes who plays in Major League Baseball (MLB). That is really ones opinion, but some don’t have anything but I slap on the wrist. Commissioners around these leagues usually suspend the player for a couple games until all of the details and videos come out. Ray Rice was suspended two games until they saw evidence then he was suspended for the whole year. Some wanted him banned
On October 15, 2012, a fan of the New Orleans Saints, David Mancina filed a lawsuit against the National Football League (NFL) and its commissioner Roger Goodell. Mr. Mancina’s complaint was framed as a class action lawsuit representing all season and single ticket holders for the Saints games during the 2012-2013 season. The basis of his lawsuit stems from the NFL’s punishment to the Saints organization in connection with the bounty scandal. On March 21, 2012, following an investigation, the NFL imposed a punishment against the Saints, with the head coach, assistant coach, general manager, and several players being suspended. Additionally, the team was required to forfeit its second round of draft choices in 2012 and 2013.
On February 19th, 2014, a video of Ray Rice, the running back of the Baltimore Ravens, was released in which he was seen dragging the body of his limp fiancee out of a casino elevator. After being arrested and spending a year in a pretrial intervention program, Ray Rice was suspended for only 2 games. However, shortly after this, the NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, changed the domestic violence policy of the NFL, making it so that first time offenders would receive a 6 game suspension, and second time offenders would be banned for life. Then, on September 9th, another video was released of Rice punching his fiancee in the head and knocking her unconscious. In response to this, the Ravens terminated Rice’s contract and the NFL suspended him
Well, though NFL claimed to have done a thorough and comprehensive investigation of Ray Rice, they never saw the video which was eventually released by TMZ. It is therefore probable that, though the NFL investigators did investigate Manning’s, they did don’t dig deep enough due to their close relationship.
In the article”NFL Apologize to Women for Ray Rice” Roxanne Jones who was the former Vice President of the NFL and national lecturer on sports , is trying to convince others that the domestic violence act Ray Rice committed against his former fiancé Janay Palmer was a more severe act than he was held accountable for. She is addressing an argument to Roger Goodell , the NFL commissioner ,that Rices’ suspension from playing football should have been longer than just two games. Jones believes the suspension what unjustified because Rice was seen on camera dragging Palmer who was unconscious at the time out of a casino elevator. Jones compares this domestic violence act to an animal abuse crime, which occurred
I believe the NFL should create a position (If they have not already) that is responsible for all fines and suspensions. This could be Goodell, but if the player appeals the suspension or fine then the NFL should create a three-person panel that will hear the appeal. The panel will consist of a member of the league, NFLPA, and an independent arbitrator.
The NFL has done a poor job handling players who have faced domestic violence cases. They still have players who were accused of domestic violence and found guilty that are still in the NFL. Tyreek hill is a player for the Kansas City Chiefs, was found guilty in 2015 for strangling his girlfriend. He was founded guilty for domestic violence. He is now back on the team and making an impact for the chiefs by having impactful games which is a blessing for him. “During Kansas City's 30-27 overtime win over Denver, Hill had one of the best games of any player all season. In the win, Hill scored three touchdowns and became the first rookie since 1965 to have a receiving touchdown, rushing touchdown and return touchdown all in the same game. (Breech/CBSSports,
In February 2012, Ray Rice, a former Baltimore Ravens running back, and his fiancée, Janae Palmer, were arrested for assault charges after they had gotten into a fight at a casino in Atlantic City. A few weeks after their arrest, a video surfaced of Rice dragging Palmer out of an elevator by her shoulders. Police later stated they had video footage of Rice knocking Palmer unconscious prior to dragging her off the elevator. By late March, Rice had been indicted for third degree aggravated assault. (Elliott, 2014). With a popular NFL player under fire, this case received ample media coverage. After the NFL announced their decision to only suspend Rice for the first 2 games of the season following his indictment, the decision was discussed on ESPN’s morning sports talk show, First Take.
In recent discussions of so called “Deflategate,” a controversial issue has been whether or not Tom Brady was guilty of being implicitly aware of footballs being illegally deflated to give the New England Patriots an unfair advantage during the AFC Championship game. A report was published on May 6th By the NFL (Investigative Report Concerning Footballs Used During the AFC Championship Game on January 18th, 2015. Hereafter referenced as the Wells Report) which found that the footballs were deflated to such a point where human intervention was the only explanation. On one hand, the NFL Executive Vice President Troy Vincent argued in his suspension letter to Brady that Brady was guilty due to his lack of cooperation with the NFL investigation, and his evasion of scrutiny on the subject. From this perspective, Brady both lying about knowing a staffer and also refusing to provide the subpoenaed messages from his phone (Ian Rappaport, ESPN contributor. May 11, 2015) both point to his guilt.
In the beginning of the NFL, players were only punished for violating gambling policies. Paul Tagliabue’s, Roger Goodell’s predecessor, tenure as commissioner resulted rare suspension for off-field issues. The NFL policies and discipline have only recently changed to a coercive and legitimate power governed by the reigning NFL commissioner. Since the start of Roger Goodell’s reign, discipline for off-field conduct has dramatically risen. Goodell has strengthened his resolve by implementing an unprecedented personal conduct policy in 2007, to be followed throughout the
Football is America’s favorite sport to watch. All we are doing is simply observing the sport for entertainment. America isn’t thinking about the wear and tear of these NFL players. We don’t take into consideration all the damage that their bodies are going through nor the amount of head trauma that they receive. Roger Goodell needs to make more of an effort into protecting these professional players.
