The Qualities of the Prince, written by Niccolo Machiavelli, is “one of his most celebrated works” (Prince 219). Machiavelli’s work includes two contrasting forces called luck and character. When Machiavelli mentions luck, he means one’s fortune, chance, or fate. Machiavelli also includes character; one’s virtues or life values. Machiavelli writes about how a Prince should be. Many princes are considered extremely virtuous or extremely cruel: one cruel, another merciful; one treacherous, another faithful; one effeminate and cowardly, another bold and courageous; one humane, another haughty; one lascivious, another chaste; one trustworthy, another cunning; one harsh, another lenient; one serious, another frivolous; one religious, another unbelieving; and the like?” (Prince 224) Should a prince be nice and caring or evil and cruel? This question is what Machiavelli answers through his writing. Machiavelli believes that a prince should know everything there is about war and needs to be prepared for an attack at any given time, even if a nation is in a time of peace. Being kind will leave you with the reputation for being kind, which is not necessarily bad, unless people start to take advantage of your weakness. There is no way that I could be a prince because this would be my biggest fall. I care too much for people. This problem has two sides to it; if a prince is too feared things will get bad, which means that people will begin to rebel and cause riots. At this point a prince can be overthrown by the people. If the military does not fear him, they could also rebel. So, a prince must be somewhat tough on the military so they will not attempt to overthrow
