Deeper Than The Surface In the song “No Scars to Your Beautiful”, Alessia Cara sends a message to women and girls around the world about knowing one’s self worth and beauty. This song reveals her perspective on what young girls around the world face when society tries to force its standard of beauty into their minds. She sends a much needed message of self-love, inspiration, and encouragement. Her purpose is to show that no one is perfect and no one should have to scar themselves mentally, emotionally, or physically to be the “ideal” image of beautiful. Throughout her song, Alessia Cara uses figurative language to explain how society leads us to believe that one must earn scars to achieve beauty. This is shown in verses like “She prays to be, sculpted by the sculptor” (1.4) and “She don’t see the light that’s shining” (1.5). By looking through the eyes of others around us, such as social media, we fail to look in the mirror at ourselves and see the beauty that is within us. Unfortunately, for many girls, all we see when we look in the mirror are the flaws that are constantly pointed out and picked apart to make us feel less than worthy. The ultimate problem is that we have a hard time looking past the exterior shell of our body. We don’t see beauty in ourselves because many don’t understand that some beauty cannot be seen; it must be felt. Beauty can be defined by the way a person shows love or how they treat others. To see the light that shines within, you must self reflect. Typically, we tend to see inner beauty in others before we see it in ourselves. While it takes many women years and years to find that inner beauty, I think it is time that we start teaching this idea before it is too late. It may take a long period of time to find your inner beauty, but finding it a little late is always better than not finding it at
