Supporting a Child Who is No Longer a Child
For children who have divorced parents, there is always a constant battle for child support from one of the parents. Child support is what helps the other parent raise the child correctly using the money to clothe the child along with feeding and getting a roof over the child's head. The money is for the child's sake and no one else's. This income of child support stops once the child turns 18, meaning that one parent is now suck putting a child through college on their own. No more financial help from the other parent unless they want to. This is something that should not happen at all. If a child turns 18 and wishes to go to college, then the other parent should have to continue to pay child

Child support was created to make sure both parents were providing for the child in one way or another so why not make child support for those kids who go to college. Although the money isn’t not exactly for putting a roof over the young adult’s head or feeding them, is it helping them further their education. As a parent, you should want your child to continue with their education and help better them and help make them more successful in life. If you supported the child with child support their whole life, there's no reason the support should stop when it comes to their college expenses and their life in college. Just like when they were little, they may need financial help from both parents not just one. Many kids with divorced parents end up not being able to go to college because they cannot afford it off theirs and a single parents income. It is completely unfair to the kid as well as the parent trying to help. Both parents made the kid, therefore both parents should help the child thrive in life and that includes helping with their education expenses. No parent should have to deal with scraping by trying to put their child through school while the other parent does nothing to help and just goes on with their
Reynolds (2004) stated that five out of every six custodial parents are mothers, and he goes on to say that one out of three of those custodial parents receives a full payment averaging about five thousand dollars. Often times a judge makes the decision to grant custody to the mother based on the idea that a mother has a closer relationship with the child because of giving birth. However, it is important to remember as Smith (2003) reminds us that fathers love their children just as much as mothers, and to call them non-custodial parents is offensive. Often times when parents get divorced the mother has been a stay at home mom and the father has been the primary bread winner so, when a mom is awarded custody as you can imagine it becomes very difficult for her to balance the children and the one (or more) jobs that she has to work in order to support the family.
This is to help maintain the home for the child which many have misconstrued as monies for the parent. This has been an ongoing debate and non-custodial parents feel they should know where their money is being spent. Courts have opposed this as of today. When child support was introduced in 1975, many non-custodial parents would refuse to pay and many children were thrust into poverty. Currently, not paying child support according to Child Support Laws (2014),”made it a Federal crime to willfully fail to pay past-due child support payments.” Punishment can include loss of driver's license or passport, not able to obtain credit, and possibly not able to obtain
Child support is by far the most common thing in America. Families which include both parents are slowly dying out. Although raising a child in a single family home might be easy to some, it is actually pretty stressful for those who aren’t financially stabled. I could go into many details and situations regarding child support due to the fact that my siblings are either on the supporting side or the one who needs the support. Child support is a very big deal to me because I do feel that if the other parent doesn’t want to be in that child’s life then the least they could do is give money to the care giver so that child is not going without, especially in the infant stage.
Child support is a complex and detailed process even with the strict calculation guidelines in place. The parents can agree upon an amount or the court may adjust the amount according to the situation.
Under Family Code Section 3900, the legislation states that the father and mother of a minor child have an equal responsibility to support their child in the manner suitable to the child’s circumstances as well as the parent’s circumstances and station in life. Family Code 3901(a) followed by Section 3900 that the duty of support of a parent continues to unmarried child who has reached the age of 18 years, is a full-time high school student, and who is not self-supporting, until the time the child
If the parents of college students are paying for the students education they have a right to know what goes on academically and socially in their college life. Just like Willins said “Why should parents, who are financially supporting their children’s continuing studies, be tossed into the same category as perfect strangers?” These parents should not be ignored because they are a huge piece to a puzzle. If a certain parent does give money to help their child in college they have every right to be involved. They are willingly paying for their adult child’s
If a divorce agreement executed in 2012 specifies that a portion of the amount of an alimony payment is contingent upon the status of a child, that portion is considered to be a child support payment.
Patti Shannon and her husband started setting aside $200 per month when their youngest child was in kindergarten. They had thought, as many others probably would too, that they would be able to collect a significant amount over the next twelve years. Eventually, the Shannons had put together over $40,000 but all of what they had worked so hard to save up for was gone within their son’s first year at Texas Tech University, of whom was not even their youngest child. The Shannons are anticipating to disburse more than $200,000 to be able to put both of their children through college. Most likely there are many other families just like the Shannons who are going through the same trouble, and you and your family could very well be one of them. If you’re trying to give it all you’ve got but still don’t live up to what the tuition is expecting of you, then what is the point? Especially when the tuition doesn’t cease to increase each
Child support is the amount of money that a court orders a parent to pay each month to help support the child’s living expenses. California Family Code §4057(a) states that the guideline amount of child support, as determined by the formula, is “presumed to be the correct amount of child support to be ordered”.
The welfare of a divorcing or divorced couple's children is of the utmost importance in accordance with California divorce laws, so the court does its best to decrease negative effects on the child. In fact, child support and custody are two very significant issues. In California, children are eligible to receive support until they reach the age of 19. However, if a child turns 18 years old and becomes self-supporting, marries, dies or is not a high school student anymore, then he or she will no longer be entitled to support.
A Child Support Order is a document from a court that states (a) when, (b) how often, and (c) how much a parent is to pay for child support. A Child Support Order is typically part of a divorce decree or paternity judgment.
Jamie, you made a good point on why minors under 21 should be responsible for their college fees. If people over 18 are trusted in the ability to vote they should be able to pay for their tuition. Individuals over 18 are old enough to make their own decisions and should know that those decisions come with a price or an effect. If an individual is over 18 and decides to go to college, they should know that it is going to cost money and should have a plan in order to be able to pay. Minors, over 18 but under 21, are able to take out student loans or look for financial assistance. Like you stated, students have to be willing to apply for financial aid or student loans and not expect others to just hand them money to pay for
Divorce is not just a tough situation for the couples getting the divorce; it also has a large effect on any children involved in the divorce. When children are involved in a divorce, the first major impact they have to face is that child or children involved in the divorce losses time with each of the parents. In a non-divorced family on
Children and single parenting begins with the divorce of a couple who have children. The majority of children live with their mother. Non custodial fathers usually have less contact with their children, and involvement usually declines as time goes by. Since most single-parent households are mother-headed their income is usually below that of a man, this causes economic distress and fewer opportunities for educational and extracurricular experiences for the child. Economic constraints may limit growth enhancing experiences. Even children whose fathers pay substantial child support are faced with limiting experiences. Children hate divorce because having two of the most important people in your life living apart hurts. For children,
When parents become divorced there are many decisions that they must come to an agreement upon. "How will are possessions be divided?" and "What will happen to the children?" are often the most asked questions when divorce occurs. Custody is almost always the largest battle when husband and wife become divorced. Custody includes all duties a parent owes a child including, food, shelter, protection discipline, education, and even a child's religious beliefs (Martin 32). Often, a judge must make custody decisions for the parents. There are several types of custody, but the most common are sole custody, joint legal custody, and joint physical custody.
