There are nine roles of a nurse that will be discussed in this paper; care giver, communicator, teacher, client advocator, counselor, change agent, leader, manager, and researcher. The nurse provides patient centered care. The key role of a nurse is a caregiver. The function of a caregiver is to provide care to patients that combines both the art and the science of nursing in meeting physical, emotional, intellectual, sociocultural, and spiritual needs (Taylor, pg. 11). To promote wellness through activities that prevent illness, restore health, and facilitate coping with disability or death, the nurse, as a caregiver, incorporates the roles of communicator, teacher, counselor, leader, researcher, advocate, and collaborator (Taylor, pg. 11). The role of a nurse as a communicator is to use effective interpersonal and therapeutic communication skills to establish and maintain helping relationships with patients of all ages in a wide variety of health care settings (Taylor, pg. 11). In the role of a communicator, the nurse establishes trust, rapport, and a helping relationship. The nurse must be aware of the nonverbal and verbal communication and factors that affect communication. As a teacher, the nurse uses communication skills to assess, implement, and evaluate individualized teaching plans to meet learning needs of patients and their families (Taylor, pg. 11).
