Michaela Wonacott Dr. Daniel Christensen Biblical Worldview Class 2 28 September 2016 Assessment Assignment: The Oath of the Horatii Jacques-Louis David’s painting The Oath of the Horatii, though painted a few years before the actual French Revolution, sparked interests in the idea of giving your all. This included the lives of your family and reigning king, for the greater good of your nation. He expressed these ideas by choosing such a myth as the basis of this painting. The way the imagery screams loyalty, truth, and character; it also shows the dark traits he is revolting against, such as excess and dishonor. The Oath of the Horatii is a legend of the formation of Rome, starting with two cities bound by war and marriage. Rome and Alba,
“The Tennis Court Oath” is a painting that depicts the swearing of an oath by members mainly from the third estate, but also some from the first and second that had sided with the third. Just days before, the estates had been called by the king to a meeting of the Estates General, where the representatives from each estate gathered at the palace Versailles to discuss important matters proposed by the king. The Estates General had not met in over 150 years, but the king needed their approval for him to raise taxes to
The Oath of the Horatii is seen as one of the most symbolic masterpieces of the French Revolution and of patriotism. The ideals of freedom, equality and fraternity
This royal assembly is dominated not by Charles IV but by Queen María Luisa, whose ugly features are accentuated by her ornate costume and rich jewels. On its right is Self Portrait painted in 1803 by James Barry. Barry represents himself wearing an elegant red coat with a yellow waistcoat and white shirt underneath. In this portrait he is holding a painting of Cyclops, known in the the classical literature world as a one-eyed giant who devoured human flesh. In the background, windswept trees and an active volcano add drama towards the story of the portrait. Moving on, we are now viewing Napoleon Visiting the in the Plague-Stricken in Jaffa created in 1804 by painter Antoine-Jean Gros. The feeling of horror and sadness is within us all while viewing this painting due to Gros’ astounding emphasis on the pain felt by plague-stricken and the respect and kindness Napoleon expresses towards the ill. On the right is Madame Riviere painted sometime between 1805 and1806 by the famous painter Ingres. The subject of the painting is Madame Philibert Rivière, the wife of a high-ranking government official in the Napoleonic Empire.
As stated in Oxford Art Online (2007), Jacques-Louis David 's Oath of the Horatii painting reiterated the enlightened “ideas of ... human rights, ... and moral rectitude” (par. 2). The concept of country first then family, connected the necessary priority for the French people; some families will suffer lost that others might be free. During a period when France became bankrupt, the narcissistic, luxurious lifestyles of the aristocracy emboldened the “heroism of sacrifice” (Harris and Zucker, 2016, trx.). The painting focused on the principle of dying for one 's country for freedom; which directly connected to the agitations for
Claude Vignon’s work called David with the Head of Goliath, is an interpretation of the artist Caravaggio’s original masterpiece, which shows art’s familiar paradigm, every painter paints himself. His motivation for creating this piece was from visiting rome in 1610, he was influenced by Caravaggism, which was art inspired in the style of Caravaggio. “Some art historians regard him as a precursor of Rembrandt.” Painted circa 1620-1623, it is an oil on canvas, made in Paris, France, 133.7 cm x 98 cm (52 5/8 in. x 38 9/16 in.). “Vignon was a French painter, printmaker and illustrator, and, in 1623, was one of the most respected, productive, and successful artists in France, in which his patrons were king Louis XIII and Cardinal Richelieu.” He was born into a wealthy family and started art lessons when he was a young boy. A theme could be religious rebellion against others who were seen as powerful such as Goliath, and were not fit to be in power.
The Chansons de Geste are epic poetry from French literature around the time of Charlemagne that myth logically told the stories of paladins, knights, and lords. An illumination from this manuscript called Roland Fealty (attached) shows Roland, a well-known leader of the time pledging his allegiance, or fealty, to Charlemagne as a vassal pledging his allegiance to his lord. Roland and his men have one hand in the air and are depicted as knights with swords on their sides, as is customary of leaders during this time. Charlemagne’s face is full of strength and wisdom as he embodies the characteristics of an ideal leader. The piece is similar to other well-known works from the time such as the Ottonian Otto III enthroned. The transitional piece of the Limbourg brothers October from Les Tres Riches Heures du Duc de Berry depicts the vassals working in the fields while the castle in the background shows the prevalence of feudalism even in the early 15th century. The statue David by Donatello was patronized by the Medici family and depicts David from the Biblical David and Goliath story in which tiny David kills the giant with only a stone. David was a moral figure for Florence because he represented them earlier during this time in which they were living under threat of invasion by King Ladislaus. The Medici’s chose to patronize another statue of him, perhaps to revive humanism even more. During this time, the Medici family was coming to power in
What does it mean to be an American? It matters that I am free. Conversely, when I grow up I can pick the job I want, what shift to work, and to have a good education. It signify that I can say “The Pledge of Allegiance” and that I can vote for the President, my county clerk, and the Mayor. Accordingly, means most of all to be free and to be proud that I live in the United States of America. I also think it means to go beyond your place of birth or the documents you have, back to when throngs of Irish, Italian and Eastern Europeans crossed the Atlantic Ocean in search of a better life, no papers asked. Nevertheless, who you are than you are about, how you live your life, how you contribute to this country, notwithstanding, you pledge

I would agree with the statement that impressionism is often considered the first, true, modern art style. Impressionism was birthed, in Paris, by artists whose works were deemed unacceptable for display in the “official” salons sanctioned by the “Royal Academy”. As a reaction to the more traditional linear-style paintings, the impressionists focused on including the essential element of movement to enhance the human experience and perspective. Impressionists “abandoned traditional linear perspective and avoided the clarity of form that had previously served to distinguish the more important elements of a picture from the lesser ones” (“Impressionism”, n.d.). Impressionists aimed to stray from the traditional perfectly-liner and symmetrical forms in works of art by focusing on the actual perception of the world, which was, perpetually, imperfect.
The Era of Revolutions is thought to be associated with a time of war, but the arts, music, and science did not stop evolving during this period. It continued to be a part of this era along with every era. Many forget just how important art, music, and science were to us then and still today. “The Lictors Carrying Away the Bodies of the Sons of Brutus” this is a painting that was created to show Brutus had his sons executed for treason after discovering they had plotted to take over his government. Jacques-Louis David was the artist of this painting and when David portrayed this painting audiences connected the two between this ancient subject and current events of the unfolding French Revolution.
The source is an intriguing painting, as Christianity gained influence the belief system continually emerged upon the value of images in their previous cultural experience and they wanted to continue this in their Christian ideology. In this particular picture, a Crusader is kneeling before God as he is sworn to protect, serve as we he would for a feudal lord or those in need.
A considerable amount of Haring’s art was made to protest a vast majority of concerns such as organized religion. This particular subject, Haring was, proved to be very skeptical of due to his work The Ten Commandments. This piece included 10 canvases, “the paintings are acrylic and oil on canvas and are each approximately 25 feet high by 17.5 feet wide” (Haring). The very first canvas depicts a cluster of snakes peeping out of a figures mouth, which could be translated as the commandment included in the bible about worshiping no other Gods. One can also analyze the 10th painting which depicts a giant hand extending a hanging oversized dollar bill before a pair of comparably smaller reaching hands, to be based on the tenth commandment that
Jacques-Louis David was a Neo-classical artist in 18th Century France. He painted in this serious style as a direct reaction against the accepted Rococo art era. Whilst the Rococo era was shallow and frivolous in subject matter (see The Swing, right), David’s paintings focused strongly on ideas of sacrifice and duty. But why would he work in this way? It was because David had a clear purpose for his art. He was a strong Republican who longed for the day when France would overthrow the gluttonous,
