Obama Care : The Affordable Care Act

President Obama signed the Affordable Care Act on March 23, 2010. This law puts in place widespread health insurance reforms that expanded out over the last 4 years and continues to change the lives of many Americans today. Health care reform has been an extensively debated topic for multiple years, and the ACA is the first effective attempt at passing a law aiming to make health care not only affordable, but accessible for all individuals. The law impacts many Americans including, children, employers, government programs which includes federal and state, health plans and private insurers, health care coverage, health care cost, and the quality of care received. The main goal of the law is to expand health care coverage, broaden Medicaid eligibility, minimize and regulate health care cost, and improve the health care delivery system. In order to improve the health care delivery there have been new consumer protections established and an increase access to affordable care.

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (a.k.a. Obamacare) was signed into law by President Barack Obama on March 23, 2010. While the act is directed at addressing one of the country's most pressing problems, it generated much controversy as a consequence of the ethical dilemmas that it brings on. According to Emily Miller, Obamacare is causing people’s health insurance premiums to rise by around 1 to 9 percent (Miller 15-15). Not only are insurance premiums rising, but ever since the Supreme Court declared the Affordable Care Act constitutional approximately 20 tax hikes have been approved (Battersby). All the aforementioned reasons are helping pay for Obamacare. Although providing health insurance for people that cannot afford it is important, the Affordable Care Act should be revoked because it will hurt the economy.

The issue has many Americans believing it is a great thing for our country while others believe it is a terrible idea and then of course there are those who don’t know what to think. However, I think that we need to take in account how Obamacare is negatively impacting the lower class, middle class, and upper class; therefore, we should remove it. Obamacare is one of the most controversial topics because there are many holes in the system that makes The Affordable Care Act almost impossible to provide equal coverage to everyone. For instance, it’s effecting small and large businesses, there is a penalty if you do not sign up for the ACA and there are not enough doctors that are available. In addition, there are many other subheadings under The Affordable Care Act, such as Medicaid, which is a federal law to provide assistance and Medi-Cal 2, which is California 's statewide insurance but follows under Medicaids 3 same procedures and requirements. We need to look at health care as a privilege and not so much as a right.

The changes that have been made have been monumental in the health care world. These changes have been positive as well as negative. This new government policy has come about through the Affordable Care Act, more commonly known as Obamacare. This new program has been so purely monumental, because government until then had not been directly involved with health care as much as they are. Benefits include lower costs, and thousands of uninsured individuals and families with health care. Downsides are more and higher taxes, and health insurance goes up. There has been much controversy centered around this topic, and many debates bring the good and bad points of Obama care. One significant fact about Obamacare, is that a lot of Americans don’t understand what Obama care is and what it actually is designed to accomplish. The important question to ask, is do the benefits outweigh cons? Many say yes, and many would like to challenge that. The Affordable Health Care act was designed to give aid to thousands that did not, or could not have health care and it has done exactly that, however it has made others pay in their place, and the question still stands. Is that right, or wrong?

In 2010, before the Healthcare Act was signed Obama noticed some of the small issues that were going on in healthcare systems. Obama seen that some of the insurance Companies had some unjustified rates for their healthcare plan. He observed how some of the prices for healthcare were controlled by hospitals and private doctors. The way that the healthcare system used to work was that the people that could afford the healthcare plans were able to get them. The People that were unable to get healthcare insurance like through their job or a private practice had to rely on getting Medicaid and Medicare was only for disable people or elderly people. The Affordable healthcare Act was placed to help people throughout the U.S. receive insurance even if they don’t qualify with their employer or private healthcare insurance. What many people do not know is that the new affordable care act offers many great benefits. In my opinion, I believe The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, also known as Obama care, has a profound positive effect on America by reducing the cost of premiums, removing the financial fear amongst those who are uninsured that seek medical attention and lastly, not allowing insurance companies to reject the elderly or an individual with a pre-existing health condition health coverage.
