American youth’s are in the worst physical shape due to our modern life- notably television, video games and computers. Obesity is one of the biggest drivers of preventable chronic diseases and health care costs in the United States. The projection of the current generation of children has a shorter life expectancy than their parents, a trend that has not been seen for over 100 years. Obese children are five times as likely as their healthy-weight peers to become overweight or obese as teens and adults.
Obesity is associated with several health problems, diseases attributable to obesity occur in almost every body system, including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, cancers (endometrial, breast, and colon), hypertension, dyslipidemia, stroke, liver and gallbladder disease, sleep apnea etc., A number of studies have consistently demonstrated that obesity can significantly impair …show more content…

Primary prevention of chronic diseases is more challenging than primary prevention of infectious diseases because it requires changing health behaviors. Food experts say healthy diets don’t have to cost more than unhealthy ones, but low-income families may not have the knowledge, facilities, and time to cook well from scratch. Taking stress management, parenting classes, preparation for retirement from the workforce, and cooking classes are examples of health education that aim for a better self-wellness. Parents and school administrators need to become more appreciative of the positive ramifications of a healthy lifestyle. Medical costs have more than doubled over the last decade, and one of the reasons is due to our modern obesity. Reducing obesity, improving nutrition and increasing activity can help lower costs through fewer doctor's office visits, tests, prescription drugs, sick days, emergency room visits and admissions to the hospital and lower the risk for a wide range of
