Healthy People 2020 is a program that was launched in December 2010 with goals and objectives aimed at promoting health and preventing diseases in U.S. (Aungst, 2011). Chronic diseases such as diabetes and cancer cause seven out of ten deaths in every year. Many of the risk factors that contribute to the development of these diseases are preventable. The package is aimed at implementing appropriate measures to ensure most people live a healthy life so as to exploit their full potential. Healthy People 2020 is product of a stakeholder feedback process that is supreme in government and the health sector. Thousands of remarks were considered before a final draft was drawn for the program`s objectives. Among the objectives addressed in the program include mental health and mental disorders, environmental health, injury and violence preventing, diabetes, nutrition and weight status, blood disorders and blood safety and tobacco use. In my research, I picked on tobacco use as one of the objectives in the Healthy People 2020. Every year almost half a million people die in the U.S from smoking related illnesses and millions suffer from a disease caused by smoking.
Breathing in any gaseous form of a substance is the fastest way of delivering it into the bloodstream. Once you inhale, the gas is diffused into the pulmonary vein, it goes to the heart and then travels to the brain. Lungs have tiny bulbs called alveoli that form an area large enough to administer recreational drugs like nicotine in a cigarette smoke. The inhaled substances activates reactions in the brain that are similar to those of the organic compositions of catecholamine and phenethylamine families, which are associated with pleasure. No wonder the feeling of being mildly high after inhaling a few puffs of nicotine in tobacco. Inhaling anything into the lungs causes partial combustion that produces carbon monoxide gas that impairs the ability of blood to carry oxygen. Cigarettes, cigars and piped tobacco are made from dried tobacco leaves. Some of the chemicals found in tobacco products are; lead, benzene, nitrosamines, cadmium, arsenic, and acetaldehyde. Most of the toxic substances that come from burning tobacco do not come from the additives but from
The health status of the population in the United States is a national priority. The Healthy People 2020 outlines priorities and to improve the health of individuals and communities across the country. Healthy People 2020 is defined as a comprehensive set of national objectives for “improving the health of all Americans” (Healthy People 2020, n.d, para. 1). The Healthy people 2020, is aimed at improving the health of individuals and communities and envisions “a society in which all people live long, healthy lives” (Healthy People 2020, n.d, para 4). A short priority list was developed and contains twenty-six objectives knowns as Leading Health Indicators (LHI). The list of objectives was created to prioritize health issues that must be addressed and to find appropriate actions to take in order to improve the health of the population.
Healthy People 2020 discusses a number of special population’s that have barriers to care including; race, age sex, sexual identity, age, disability, socioeconomic, and location; this post will discuss race (ethnic) group. There are a number of races mentioned in healthy people 2020, such as, Asian, American Indian, Alaskan, Latino and African American (Healthy People 2020, n.d.). Access to health care in an ethnic group is multifaceted from the lack of trust, lack of health care education, discrimination and cost of care including health insurance. According to Howard, Peace, & Howard (2014), African Americans have a greater risk of three preventable diseases, hypertension, renal failure and bacterial infections stating; “no other disease
The Objective for Healthy People 2020 is to significantly reduce the chances of the high risk population and the population who has the disease. The goal is try to implement a change in their lifestyle choices. Health People 2020 reports that “44.6 percent of adults aged 18 years and over who were at high risk for diabetes with prediabetes reported increasing their levels of physical activity in 2005-08.” The 2020 baseline objective in 2005-08 was at 44.6 percent and
Healthy People 2020 (2015) states, health disparities are a health outcome of greater or lesser extent between populations, which includes populations by race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, age, disability, education, income, or geographic location. The purpose of the post is to discuss how disparities play a role in health, employment, and education for African Americans. I will also discuss two nursing interventions to decrease health disparities in this population, as well as challenges to implementing the nursing interventions.
I enjoyed reading your DQ1 post this week, and there are a lot of contributing factors that led to disparities within the health care system. There are a lot of federal initiative to help aid in decreasing disparities within the health care system like the National HIV/AIDS strategy. The Healthy People 2020 initiative has been a useful tool to track disparities within the United States (U.S.) healthcare system. They analyze and track a wide variety of factors that can lead to disparities like geographic location, ethnicity, and sexual orientation (chap. 11). To end disparities, there has to be an effective way to monitor progression and educate every individual in the health care system about disparities. But like
United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Healthy People 2020 (2018) recognizes cardiovascular disease as one of the most widespread and costly health problems in the United States, accounting approximately $320 billion in health care expenditures and related expenses annually. Healthy People 2020 (HP2020) identifies prevention of cardiovascular disease as one of the priorities and includes an objective “to increase overall cardiovascular health and quality of life for US population." (HHS, Healthy People 2020, 2018)
I spent the past week reviewing all the data I have collected to this point. The data and health needs reported in Healthy People 2020, as well as the epidemiological and community data I collected, convey consistent themes. The HP 2020 topics of injury and violence prevention, hearing and communication disorders, oral health and access to health services all appear to be topics of concern and are identified health needs of the community I am targeting. With epidemiological data showing the rates of autism climbing at steady levels, the need for an increase awareness and planned interventions involving these health topics will be essential to meet the objectives established by the federal government.
According to “Healthy People 2020”, n.d. exclusively breast feeding infants for at least 3- 6 months significantly impacts their health outcomes and has long terms health benefits. Ultimately, the goal is to encourage nursing mothers to breastfeed for 1 year (“Maternal Infant and Child,” n.d.). Despite this knowledge women continue to face challenges in regard to public or employer accommodation to assist nursing mothers.
Healthy People 2020 is a movement in America which was started in 1979 and provides 10 year national objectives based on science for promoting health and preventing diseases. It sets and monitors health objectives and tries to influence individuals to make informed health decisions. With such kind of objectives, smoking becomes a big health concern to Healthy People 2020. Smoking affects national health and causes health disparities. Smoking has been associated with a number of health complications such as cancer and heart diseases. Under Healthy People 2010 issues such as smoking during pregnancy and cigarette smoking cessation were to be addressed.
The overall goals of Healthy People 2020 are to achieve health equity, eliminate disparities, and improve the health of all groups (Lancaster & Stanhope, 2016). Rev. Dr. Granger Westberg coined the term “parish nurse” in the early 1980’s as he collaborated to establish healing ministries among healthcare professionals (Brehm & Cruz, 2007). Objectives that are amenable to parish nursing within Healthy People 2020 are that a patient’s physical, mental, quality of life, well-being/satisfaction and participation in everyday activities are addressed which addresses a patients needs in a holistic approach. Parish nurses provide encouragement, support, and information to motivate and facilitate clients as they seek to utilize health services which
In 2010, Healthy People 2020 was started by the Department of Human Health Services. Health programs and research topics were instituted to help Americans live healthier and longer lives (CDC, 2014). The 42 topics presented are all very important in maintaining the goals set by Healthy People 2020. If these programs were to be cut or budget restraints imposed on them, the impact would be felt by all Americans. There would be more unhealthy people, preventable chronic diseases would be more prevalent, and education and health associated programs would be
One cause is genetics some people are prone to more illnesses and diseases than others. Lifestyle choices of whether to eat health, exercise, drink water, and see a doctor regularly can make some people healthier than others. A person’s income and access to health care can cause them to be health or unhealthy. Formal education has a positive effect on the health of an individual. A person with a strong support system can have better health due to the support and assistances they can provide. The physical environment can negatively affect a patient’s health if they are in an area without easy access to health care, or work with carcinogens.
We all know someone who has suffered from heart disease. Whether it was from a heart attack, congestive heart failure, or stroke, some type of cardiovascular disease has taken the life of someone we loved way too soon. This epidemic of heart disease must be stopped through the collaboration of physicians, nurses, law makers, and concerned citizens. The purpose of this paper is to examine cardiovascular disease, the risks associated with heart disease and obesity per Milo’s framework, comparison of obesity and Healthy People 2020 national goals, and finally the long-term and short-term goals and interventions selected for this paper.
The theoretical base for my research project will be Healthy People 2020. The reason why I chosen Healthy People 2020 is because it can provide measurable objectives. For instance, since my topic is on exposure to gun violence among youth in an urban setting I believe two of the Healthy People 2020 measurable objectives will be beneficial. Furthermore, I will use injury and violence prevention and mental health and mental disorders objective topic areas to support my research question.
The large particles in cigarette smoke, commonly known as “tar”, collect in the branching points of the lungs. The tar contains carcinogenic compounds that increase the risk of lung cancer. The small particles in cigarette smoke, including carcinogens, irritants, and corrosive chemicals, collect in the small air sacs in the lungs and damage them. These air sacs are where the blood absorbs oxygen from the air. When the small particles from the cigarette smoke are absorbed into the blood
