Oblivion Film Analysis

The vision Christopher Nolan had for The Prestige (2006) was to add to the outbreak of street magician film, whilst playing a large dramatic subplot equal in grandeur to the magical performances within the film. In the final sequence of the film, I will analyse how the cinematography and sound resolves the plot so that it summarises the themes present in the film, whilst also invoking a response from the audience. Nolan predominantly uses close up shots, non-diegetic sound (music) and dialogue collaboratively to convey the dramatic, personal subplot of the characters and their relationships, whilst appealing to the audience bringing forth an emotional response from the audience. The heavy, slow, dramatic atmosphere of the ending sequence uses various techniques to summarise and uncover the underlying mysteries of the events throughout the film and consolidate themes introduced during the exposition.

The movie Before Night Falls directed by Julian Schnabel offers viewers a glimpse of how the homosexual community in Cuba was being mistreated under Fidel Castro’s regime. The true story is told in the eyes of Cuban poet Reinaldo Arenas. The film depicts Arenas life in Cuba and all of the awful experiences that he had to deal with as a homosexual. Eventually he was arrested for false accusations of being a molester, however, he was actually under arrest for being a homosexual. Between the 1930s and 1990s, the Communist Cuba was abusive to the LGBT community as shown in their actions of harassment towards homosexuals, imprisoning the homosexuals, or sending them to re-education camps.

In the film, Night of the Living Dead, the movie starts with two siblings, John and Barbara, driving to their father's grave to drop off flowers. John is reluctant to be there and is eager to leave while Barbara is trying to pray. John teases her like when they were children saying “They’re coming to get you, Barbara!” when they both see an unknown man. Barbara goes to apologize to the unknown man but it seems he is dazed and kills John. Barbara escapes and finds herself at an empty house. In the house, she meets Ben, who borders up to the windows after taking down 3 undead. After a bit of listening to a radio for the current status of the state of emergency, Harry and Tom come upstairs. We learn that two men, two women, and a child had been in the basement of the house during Barbara’s and Ben’s struggle with the undead. After much argumentation on if the basement or upstairs was safer between Harry and Ben, Harry went back downstairs to his wife and child. Tom and his wife, Judy, stayed upstairs with Ben believing they could properly border up the windows together. After much convincing from Helen, Harry’s wife, Harry and she join the others upstairs. While listening on the radio, they are given more updates of the state of emergency. The radio announcer suggests instead of staying in place, to now go to one of the designated “safe areas”. The movie, Requiem for a Dream (Selby & Mansell, 2000) exposes the multiple faces of addiction. Addiction can change a person’s identity and therefore, impacts each person differently. This movie explores the life of four addicts who push the boundaries of their own lives leaving the viewer to wonder, how far will they go to use drugs? The focus of this paper is on what addiction looks like for the character, Harry Goldfarb.

In my list of movies that always make me cry is the movie “Ghost” which was released on July 13, 1990. This movie made that summer really worth while and gave us romance, comedy and much to think about. The movie starred Demi Moore, Patrick Swayze and Whoopi Goldberg.

A red Camaro sits somewhere rusting in a police lot, a tree having grown up in the middle of it, yet still oblivious as to the grief it has caused. Sometimes it’s something as little as a car to make people do things as atrocious as taking another life. In his film, Into the Abyss, Werner Herzog does more than just explore the murder case against two boys, Michael Perry and Justin Burkett, but rather take into account the complexity and reasoning behind the murders, along with the morality behind the death penalty. The film refuses to use any graphic images or over-the-top scenes to drive its point across, but rather creeps along with its own unique imagery, complex subject matter, and Werner’s ethical compassion about how people and their motivations.

Unbroken was made into a book in 2010 by Laura Hillenbrand and later adapted into a movie in 2014. It is a story about a young Olympian named Louis “Louie” Zamperini who made it into the 1936 Berlin Olympics. He later gets drafted into the air force and fought in World War II only to get stranded in the ocean and captured by the Japanese. The book and the movie both cover the same main topics and are over the same events, but they aren’t both the same. The book goes into more detail than the movie in many instances; however, sometimes the movie shows a more detailed and powerful scene when compared to the book.

Avatar is a blockbuster film from 2009 and one of my most favorite Sci-fi films of all time. The film was directed by James Cameron, who is known for directing films like Titanic (1997), Aliens (1986), and the Terminator (1984), all of which helped shape the film industry into what it is today. Although at the time, there was a recession and people were trying to save money, this movie became the highest grossing film in at the time. The movie provided stunning 3D technology unlike any other movie and this was one of the reasons that made people want to go watch the film. From visual effects to the camera angles, James Cameron directed this movie to make the audience feel like they are in the movie. Although the film looked amazing, there were messages and themes inside the film that made it such a success. The film provoked discussions about various messages and themes embedded inside the film, such as terrorism, Imperialism, religious connections, and connections to current world. Such messages can be clearly seen throughout the plot of the movie.

The directors chosen camera technique, a simple two composition that progresses the scene a steady pace, forces the audience to feel a part of the awkward exchange; obviously, a quality of film that could not be as profoundly achieved through the narrative in the novel.

Corpse Bride is a beautiful movie about love, death, and sacrifices, in a classic Tim Burton style the movie is dark but with a gradual light. The living world is portrayed as dull and nearly colorless but the land of the dead is a completely different situation because it is full of color and excitement. Although this movie sounds like a horror film just by the title and the appearance of the cover art but it is the exact opposite. This movie is very well written and played out, it may one of the most beautiful and touching animated love stories. Tim Burton is an excellent writer, animator, director, artist, and producer known for his dark and gothic works so this movie does not fall short of any expectations. Although many people know Christopher Nolan for his more recent films “The Prestige”, “Dark Knight Trilogy”, “Interstellar”, “Inception”, and now most recently the war film “Dunkirk”. Although each of these films are amazing we should never forget one of Christopher Nolan’s first great directed films “Memento.” Memento is a uniquely structured psychological thriller film written and directed by Christopher Nolan. Christopher Nolan is an English film director, screenwriter, and producer. He is one of the highest-grossing directors in history and among the most acclaimed filmmakers of all time. He made his directorial debut with the “Following” in 1998 Christopher Nolan has continued to turn out great movies that have received multiple Academy Award nomination. He found further popular and critical success with The Dark Knight Trilogy beginning in 2005 and Inception in 2010, which received eight Academy Award nominations, including for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. He has produced and directed several other notable films and his films have grossed over four billion dollars worldwide and garnered a total of 26 Oscar nominations and 7 wins. Nothing will ever go according to plan. Tests are failed, people are changed, loves are lost. As is the case with Tim Burton’s The Corpse Bride, following the story of an elegiac young man, the son of newly rich fishmongers. Victor Van Dort (Johnny Depp) is betrothed to Victoria Everglot (Emily Watson), the daughter of penniless aristocrats, to heighten both of their families, and despite his initial terror, he falls in love with her. Unfortunately, Victor has a horrible time at the rehearsal and cannot remember his vows, leading him off into the words where, while practicing, he inadvertently puts the wedding ring on the Corpse Bride (Helena Bonham Carter), a young woman who was murdered on her wedding day for her parent 's money. Victor’s adventures in the land of the dead tear him between his new wife and his intended bride, while teaching him more about himself and those around him. Throughout the film, the elegantly lifelike clay figures portray the lifelessness of the living juxtaposed with the liveliness of the dead in Victorian Europe.
