Observation Paper (Empire State Building)
The Empire State Building is a skyscraper located in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. Its construction began on March 17, 1930, and was completed on April 11, 1931. John Jacob Raskob, the creator of General Motors, wanted a building that would have been taller than Walter Chrysler’s building. He went to William Lamb, someone who was a partner at the architectural firm of Shreve, Lamb, and Harmon and he explains to him his dream of a skyscraper that would exceed the Chrysler Building. When the Empire State Building was being made, there were only two criteria that were needed to be followed during the construction: the first one was that it must resemble a pencil. The second criteria were that it must soar higher than any other structure in the world. Although the building had many setbacks during the construction of it the building ended up finishing 45 days ahead of schedule and on top of that the building ended up being $5 million dollars under budget.
The Empire State Building was then viewed as a new symbol of what felt like a New America. During the 1920s and the 1930s, the United States was being split from an old style of rural traditions and eventually was beginning to make modern urban traditions. When the Empire State Building was being built, it began to fuel the power and wealth of the clients who were children of immigrants, this then served as a legitimacy status began to represent the face of the
The United States endured an extreme amount of growth in the latter half of the nineteenth century. The rapid, yet massive, expansion inevitably made a global statement. By means of new technology and climbing citizen rates, a path was created for the country to skyrocket. Moreover, immigrants from around the world became intrigued with the opportunity for possibility and wanted to make their mark, while also accustoming themselves to the new culture and society. Therefore, the government created a dramatic impact on the United States through territorial and railroad expansion, immigration acceptance, and the aftermath of the black codes.
Construction on The Empire State Building began on October 1, 1929 just a few weeks before the biggest stock market crash in United States history. On September 9, 1930, Al Smith the former Governor of New York, marked the spot of the cornerstone of what would become the worlds tallest and the century’s best building. That day Smith gave a speech to a crowd of over five thousand, which included mostly workers in hopes of a job on the upcoming project. The Empire State Building opened its doors just eight months later on Friday, May 1, 1931. For a country in midst of a great depression The Empire State Building was a symbol of hope in dark times and showed that Americans would persevere even in a
The Statue of Liberty is one of the most well know symbols of the United States, across the world. For this reason I chose to analyze the dramatic effect it creates, and what methods it implores to invent this "universal" meaning. It is one of the strongest visual representations of the ideals which our country is founded upon. I intend to defend the argument that the Statue of Liberty posses the power of persuading human thought using the terms encompassed in Kenneth Burke's Pentad, shaping the definition of "America" for people through out the world.
The Freedom Tower also known as “One World Trade Center” is the tallest skyscraper in the western hemisphere, and the fifth tallest skyscraper in our planet earth. The building structure consists of 104 stories can also be described as the North Tower of the original World Trade Center. The Building location is 285 Fulton Street, Manhattan New York, United States 10007, as depicted in the map below Figure 1.
I noticed each time that I observed Addie she wanted to do art first, you can tell it is her favorite. She always took her time during these art projects and was very enthusiastic when creating them. Another personality trait I noticed was that she is not a follower but a leader. She always did what she wanted to do and never changed stations when her friends did. Addie was so happy with her painting, filling up the entire canvas that she said to the teacher “we are almost done come see.” Addie spent the most time at the art station and held the longest attention span out of the three children I observed. She never moved back and forth between different activities during short periods of time. I did notice Addie wanted the attention from the
Believe it or not, skyscrapers have only been around since the the late 1880’s. The main reason for this was because the materials used to build buildings at the time could not support the weight of a skyscraper. If people wanted to build taller buildings, they had to use stronger materials that could withstand the weight of the building and keep it from collapsing. At the time, that material was steel, but there was a problem; steel was not mass produced at the time. This made it financially unethical to build with, the price of steel only began to drop after Andrew Carnegie created his steel business. Andrew Carnegie helped strengthen the American economy turning it into a world power by learning from his poverty when he was younger, starting his steel business which provided the world an important resource for the development of industry, taking advantage of workers to maximize profit, and devoting his later life to philanthropy.
Since its inception, America as a nation has developed and progressed according to trends of change that collectively define an era. Like all other eras, the time period of 1875-1925 experienced growth, changes, movements, and new ideals. It is the way that these changes came about that defines this era. Americans started to push for changes in many arenas of life that were previously unchallenged. New experiences and opportunities were also presented to America that caused tributaries in the former American ideal. These pressures for change could not be ignored and thus America continued its maturity in a new and unique manner. The changes in the American sphere of life and the development of greater
With this new open land, the planning could commence. The architects for the Empire State
The White House has been a figure of many things in its time, for two hundred year it had been a symbol of the president. In the 1800s, The White House became a nationwide symbol for the capital. (2) In the troubled time of the 1900s, the White House began to become an icon of American democracy. (5) While the people loved the White House, they thought of it as more of an office for the president than a palace. It was unthinkable for a president who had lost in an election to refuse to leave. The White House is a symbol of the president, the capital and American
Our nation's revolution was a great achievement in U.S History. With the dawn of a new nation, there would have to be a central location to make the new decisions of our country. Our capitol has stood as the heart of our country since the late 1700s. The United States capitol is among the most architecturally impressive and symbolically important buildings in the world. For almost two centuries it has housed the meeting chambers of the senate and the House of Representatives. Begun in 1793, the capitol building has been built, burnt, rebuilt, extended, and restored. Today our capitol stands as a monument to the American people and their government. (AOC.gov)
One of the innovations was the construction of skyscrapers. Before steel was used, a skyscraper was only considered four to five stories tall and was made out of stone. Very little light was able to get into the building because the structure would become unsafe if too many windows were put in. This made the building very dark, cold and damp. In 1885, with the innovation of steel, the first skyscraper, The Home Insurance Building, was built in Chicago, Illinois. This building paved the way for architects around the country to build taller and stronger skyscrapers into today’s times.
Today technology allows us to construct structures that we would never have been able to make in the past. Some of the creations are impressive based on what they accomplish but others are masterpieces in themselves. Man’s capability to build such tall buildings, as the skyscrapers we are familiar with covering our cities today, is a major expression of the advancements we have made as a culture. The power necessary to build such tall structures inspired competition between architects to see who could build the tallest one. One skyscraper that has inspired many and served as a model, for high rise buildings that were created after, is the Chrysler Building. The Chrysler Building serves as an identifying mark to anyone that
The use of the empire state building is to build the world’s tallest building or in New York, but about 30 years later another building beat the empire for being the tallest. The building that beat the empire state building to be tallest in the World Trade Center's North Tower. Another thing that the building is used for the office building. The last thing that is it used for is for the attraction on the 86th floor to see the view and the 102nd floor.
The grand architecture stood out the moment you walked onto the grounds. Very ornate and regal. The Romans brought a lot of new ideas to architecture, of which are the arch, baked brick and the use of concrete cement. We can contribute constructed items such as sewer systems, baths, aquaducts, amphitheaters, tombs, palaces or halls to them. The White House has six iconic columns on its façade which was an inspiration from Roman Architecture. Their style of architecture is a perfect example of innovation and experimentation. It gave mankind buildings that they never have seen before. It provided citizens an appeal. Today, we are still drawn to beautiful spaces and buildings. That is what allures the public to proceed to enter an establishment.
Working on the Empire State Building became a major influence throughout the book for Briody. When Briody started working on the building, he did not yet realize how important it will be for him. As he gets comfortable talking with Grace, he opens up about the fact that he loves the working environment the building brings. “Same as you. Actually, I’m truly happy when I’m on the job. There’s nothing like it really.” (189) This quote further explains how Briody develops his admiration towards the building. With his admiration comes his personality of being a hard worker. There was a part in the novel where
