The article that I read was titled Why the ocean has absorbed more carbon over the past decade, by the University of California - Santa Barbara, written on February 8, 2017. The article first began by stating that less carbon dioxide is entering Earth’s atmosphere - it is being absorbed into the oceans - the reason why is not known, but “a slowdown of the ocean's overturning circulation” (sciencedaily.com) is likely to be the cause. The article supports the claim by stating that the discoveries are in the reputable Nature journal. Next, the article quoted UC Santa Barbara geographer Timothy DeVries stating that the circulation slowdown is thought to be a result of human activity from heating and freshening the ocean’s surface which causes melted

This article mentioned that Al Gore predicted in 2006 that the emission of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere will cause the earth to burn up in the next ten years. Al Gore was clearly wrong since it is ten years later and the earth has not burned up from carbon dioxide. Berry proved himself that Al Gore was wrong by the graph presented in his article. The model is a climate model that describes the earths global temperature has increased 0.7 C since 1980. Using actual scientific data this climate model
Dana Nuccitelli, a report in the Guardian, the article was about surveys conducted with American to see how much the public knowledge, climate change and the affected it has in the recent extreme weather. The service featured in the article was done by multiple sectors. Such as Yale, George Mason Universities, and MIT, the survey shows Americans are still not properly informed of the causes of global warming. The survey shows 54% understand human is the main caused, while 33% incorrectly believe its natural factors that cause global warming. Nuccitelli, further points out, a new study published in Nature Scientific Reports developed a real-time global warming index. The report clearly indicates that humans are the primary cause of a 1°C increase
Justin Gillis starts out by telling the readers that those emissions are for the most part from the burning of fossil fuels and are causing the ocean to rise at the fastest rate since at least the establishing of ancient Rome. Gillis then adds that if there were no human emissions, the ocean surface would be ascending less swiftly and might
Climate change is affecting oceans tremendously. Threats faced by the ocean planet seem uncontrollable. In the face of overfishing, pollution, and climate change it may seem like a drop in the bucket. With the amount of light reaching onto the shore, plants should be reduced in order for the rising sea levels to fall. Oceans have also absorbed tons of carbon dioxide from the earth’s atmosphere causing ocean acidification. Coral bleaching is caused by high water temperatures leading to coral death, and can turn into a negative impact on the entire coral ecosystem. We intend to provide options a single person can take in order to help the cause and make a difference. Our mission is to conserve the Earth’s living heritage, our global
It’s deceitful to characterize the basic facts of climate change as debatable or unsettled. Year after year, humans extract billions of tons of carbon from the bowels of the earth and blast it into the atmosphere. We need to stop indulging the questioning of humanity’s culpability.
First, an overwhelming scientific consensus agrees that human activity is primarily responsible for Global Climate Change. A study in 2010 showed that 97-98% of researchers agree that human activity is the primary cause for climate change around the world. This study also found that the expertise of researchers unconvinced was “substantially below” the researchers that were. The 2013 Cook review showed that out of the 11.944 studies, less than 1% completely rejected the possibility of humans causing this. A different review of 13, 950 studies of climate change found only 24 that rejected humans causing climate change. Let’s just go with majority rules. A different study held by Bray and Von Storch, two German scientists, showed that 83.5% of scientists studying climate believe that humans are causing the recent amounts of climate change. Also, a study in 2011 showed that 84% of scientists studying earth, space, the atmosphere, oceans and hydrology believe that human caused climate change is
Hawkins states in his article “That's right; the temperature of the planet has essentially been flat for 17 years… Even the former Director of the Climate Research Unit (CRU) of the University of East Anglia, Phil Jones, admits that it's true”(Hawkins 303). Especially Hawkins speculates the temperature has been flat for 17 years and even cites the director of CRU, yet he fails in showing enough evidence on his point. Most of the research found on global warming being momentarily paused is based on a small part of the climate system being the atmosphere while ignoring the largest part of the climate being the oceans. In addition, it’s impossible for global warming to pause if we haven’t stopped burning fossil fuels. A misconception many people have is that global warming is paused only because columnist like Hawkins backslide publishing the whole truth on the topic to convince readers it's adequate to burn fossil
Over the years, climate change has affected marine species because it has increased the ocean temperature, causing it to get warmer, which is causing a negative impact to most marine organisms like echinoderms and cnidarians (Quinn, 2016). In many cases, the optimum temperature of growth increased 1-6°C, which created harmful effects on stages of development (Quinn, 2016). In some cases such as the American lobster (Homarus americanus), warming of the ocean had caused smaller body sizes (Le Bris et al., 2016). Even though there is some research that showed that the warm temperature could also benefit the lobster’s population, most of their population has declined in the warmest and southernmost regions of the lobster’s range in places like southern New England and Long Island Sound (Quinn, 2016).
Global climate change is an issue being debated all over the world from the recent presidential debates late last year to documentaries being created on either side of the global warming debate. Currently, the world is experiencing many tremendous changes including warming or the earth and rising of our oceans. “The heat extremes were especially pervasive in the Arctic, with temperatures in the fall running 20 to 30 degrees Fahrenheit above normal across large stretches of the Arctic Ocean. Sea ice in that region has been in precipitous decline for years, and Arctic communities are already wrestling with enormous problems, such as rapid coastal erosion, caused by the changing climate” ”(Gillis, 2). Some believe that global warming exists while
As Earths average temperature increases every year, the discussion of climate change has become a significant topic in the scientific community. Human activities such as powering factories, running automobiles or something as simple as burning wood for heat, emit dangerous greenhouse gases. What makes these greenhouse gases so detrimental is that they absorb the heat radiating off of Earth and keep it in the lower atmosphere creating a “blanket” of warmth around the Earth’s surface. This causes a drastic increase in the Earths average temperature. Due to the rise in temperature, the polar caps have been melting faster than ever, this is dangerous not only because of the risk of floods and sea level increase but ocean water will become less saline and ecosystems will be destroyed, impacting humans just as much as marine life. In the article, Understand faulty thinking to tackle climate change by George Marshall, Marshall states that most people in our world today do not care about climate change because it will not affect them, “Which points to the real problem: climate change is exceptionally amorphous, … no deadlines, no geographic location, no single cause or solution.” (Marshall 2014). Because the author makes it clear that climate change is indeed a great plight, and fails to be acknowledged by people, it is a significant matter that should be discussed
Although I fully accept the paper and the time put into it I cannot fully acknowledge that all the data is conclusive as one particular season was omitted, the amount of methane emissions in the winter could be key to understanding climate change and for humans to acknowledge that change. Throughout every era of life mankind has made remarkable discoveries, creating elaborate theories that change the world, and through this paper another amazing discovery has been made. Mankind has yet to truly understand the consequences of climate change and how important the information of methane emissions is to understand and get under control. If we have more to learn, in addition more to understand then the work done in this study is vital. It seems to me that there is more to learn and that a study should be done in winter making a more viable source of data. Therefore, I fully support the findings of Dr. Parmentier and his team on the theory of rising methane emissions associated with sea ice decline, but do not support the fact there was no study done in the
The earth, as we know, is and always has been changing. Although we may not be able to feel or even see such gradual changes, we must try to aid our planet's longevity for future generations. A major problem that we face is the deterioration of Earth's atmosphere and climate change. Some believe that the problem could be fixed through geoengineering. Scientists and engineers have proposed many potential solutions with geoengineering, one being ocean fertilization. This idea suggests filling regions of the ocean with iron and other various nutrients where little biological production exists. This would increase phytoplankton activity that would take the carbon down deeper into the ocean. Ultimately, this could get rid of excess carbon when the phytoplankton die and fall to the ocean floor. Ocean fertilization, although it may have a few negative effects, could lower the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, thus slowing down Earth's natural heating process.
“When taking the heating of the entire climate system into account, our planet has warmed at a rate equivalent to 4 Hiroshima atomic bomb detonations per second over the past 15 years” (Cook). Our planet is becoming warmer. When scientists add up all the heat warming the land, oceans, atmosphere, ice melting, earth is accumulating heat equivalent to four Hiroshima bombs worth of heat per second. Global warming is a serious issue faced by our world as there has been a significant increase in temperature over the years. But the article published by Dr. Mark Sircus on “Global Warming -largest science scandal in the history” refutes the theory of global warming. Dr. Sircus states that there is no linkage between carbon dioxide and temperature leading to global warming, the sea level is not rising, arctic sea ice extent is now higher and climate change is due to solar activity. Dr. Sircus also points out that that the recent weather changes are not in line with global warming and “we are in the beginning of a deep freeze” (Global Warming - Largest Science Scandal in US History). NASA and the scientific community states that global warming is not a hoax and there is a rapid increase in Earth’s average surface temperature due to greenhouse gases released as people burn fossils. NASA states that the “key indicators of global warming are based on surface, satellite, and ocean temperature measurements, satellite measurements of energy imbalance and of receding glaciers, sea ice, and
