Candy is a swamper, which is basically a janitor, had a missing hand, is very old, and has an old dog. Candy’s dog is Candy’s longest and only friend. In many ways they parallel each other, they are both old, crippled, and are both useless to society. Later on in the book another worker named Carlson shoot Candy’s dog for him.
