With 2,396 dairy farms, Ohio produces 5.4 billion pounds of milk a year, placing Ohio 11th in dairy production within the U.S. (Dairy, n.d.). To make this possible there are many checks and balances to ensure the safety and quality of milk. Ohio’s industry goal is to produce, process, and sell quality milk. Infrastructure within the industry is ever evolving. Farmers are focusing more on the consumer’s preference whether it is animal welfare, environment, or milk safety (Common Questions, n.d.), which overall affects the production and management in the dairy industry. Therefore, the CDFA sees it fit to make sure that all of the dairy and milk that is produced locally is safe for consumption and that it will live up to a certain standard set by the department. Also there are currently limited options for lactose intolerant people. They can drink products such as almond milk, but don’t get the same nutrients as from regular milk. PETA also has a voice in this; They believe that farmers are the evil force, stealing baby calves from their mothers just to kill them. The PETA organization is also of the opinion that cows are in pain when being milked and therefore should just be left alone. In 1993, the California Milk Processor Board, a non-profit run by the California Department of Food and Agriculture, was created. Their mission was to confront the issue of decreasing milk consumption, as Americans were choosing soda and juice over milk. The board asked advertising agency Goodby, Silverstein & Partners for help with ideas regarding a campaign to increase milk sales and consumption. Initially, the agency was caught off guard, because they viewed milk as something boring and common, not in need of an ad campaign. Goodby explained the challenge: “We have all tried it. Most of us already own some…Milk is not new. It is not improvised…There is very little to say about it.”
