California is a state that is known for multiple things, but one of the most important things is Agriculture. Therefore, it is a necessity to protect agriculture and allow it to continue to increase revenue for the state. To do this, we created our own agency to look after everything agricultural in our state. The California Department of Food and Agriculture ensures the safety and health of various food and crops for controlling the agricultural regularity of all farms and crop growing operations in the state. The agency is overseen by both current California governor Jerry Brown and the branch’s president Craig McNamara. Their food safety programs for example, follow the guidelines set by both the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the California Department of Public Health. It is extremely important to make sure that food can be taken from the farm, and served on the dinner table without fear of any side effects from improper handling or infection. They must also be able to adapt to climate change and natural disasters such as a tornado or a drought. The ability to adapt ensures that there will be a constant stream of crops and food available for us to consume or use. One of the biggest problems surrounding the protection of California’s plants and crops, is the threat of pests and invasive species. Milk and dairy products are in great abundance throughout the state of California, and is a constant stream of revenue for the state. Therefore, the CDFA sees it fit to make sure that all of the dairy and milk that is produced locally is safe for consumption and that it will live up to a certain standard set by the department. As described in the mission statement from the CDFA, “The Milk and Dairy Food Safety Branch (MDFS) is charged with the mission and responsibility of ensuring that California's milk, milk products, and products resembling milk products are safe and wholesome, meet microbial and compositional requirements and are properly labeled.” (cdfa.org) As milk and dairy is also a big staple of interstate commerce, it must be adequately prepared even when conditions are less than ideal. A big example of this is seen when we examine the effects that the long drought has had on the crop. Some farmers from outside of the state have even tried to persuade California farmers into moving. As CNBC states in an article, "Increasingly every year, there are more states showing up at the World Ag Expo to entice California dairies to move to their states, and they're finding a receptive audience.” (Daniels) The promise of a stable water supply and the chance to be more competitive in a smaller state is apparently attractive to some farmers, and they seem to be weighing up their options.
