In school, teachers do not go into much detail regarding the agricultural history of coastal Georgia. It is often overlooked, even though it is one of the main reasons that Georgia was settled and a large part of Georgia’s history.

One of the most important events that had occurred in the state of Georgia that would forever shape its history begun shortly after the American Revolution. When the cotton gin was invented, Georgia’s economy had transformed into a cotton and tobacco based plantation economy. In order to keep with the demands of the economy and citizens, Georgia had adopted the Headright System. The Headright System granted every head of household large acreages of land, which would quickly replace the small farms in Georgia. Then in 1783, the Treaty of Paris had formally ended the American Revolution. Although the war had ended, the nation was still troubled with various issues. The state of Georgia would see shortly after the Revolutionary War that although the Treaty of Paris had given the Floridian territory back to Spain, they were to be left to settle an international dispute once Spain asserted their ownership of land east of the Mississippi and north of the Yazoo River. Georgian’s who were eager to purchase the large amounts of land found west of the Mississippi to either begin plantations or to sell lands to planters. This would soon cause the climax of much trouble in Georgia when state legislators and land companies would work together to essentially set the prices to sell the land in what would be known as the “Yazoo Sale” scandal, which would indirectly result in the Trail of Tears. The state of Georgia began in 1733. The coast along the Altamaha River was not much more than just a tidal swamp and mud. The early Spanish settlers named this section of marshland the Guale Territory. There was not much incentive to develop the coastal marshes because the original Georgia grant limited each family to 50 acres and prohibited the use of slave workers (Sullivan 124). Therefore, large plantations found in South Carolina and Virginia were not available to the Georgia Colony. The Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation is relatively new, historically speaking, because of Georgia’s long history. This once beautiful plantation represents the history and culture of Georgia’s coast. The estate began its journey through history known as Broadface.

One reason for this is the many folds in the landscape- almost too many. This would cause landscapers to survey the land, and it would most likely be expensive to cut a piece of flat land into the surfaces of the many hills and mountains. The final reason this region isn’t an ideal place for an amusement park is due to its common erosion. If the land beneath the amusement park was somehow weathered and eroded, it could put people and the economy of Georgia on the line.

The 80 degree Christmases, daily summer afternoon thunderstorms, and the distinct bite of a sand gnat are the characteristics of the southeast Georgia coast that I am all too familiar with. The little-known second oldest city in the United States, Saint Marys, Georgia, has acted as my very first and unforgettable flower pot. I have grown up exploring the swamp-like environment, along the Georgia-Florida border, and loving every second of it, for I have spread my roots throughout the basin and soaked up every experience. At this point in my life, I have savored every nutrient available in the southeast Georgian soil.
