Old Stone Bank is a very unique building in Providence, Rhode Island. Old Stone Bank contains architectural styles from several different time periods. The architectural styles that are found in Old Stone Bank are ancient Greek architecture, and Byzantine architecture. The two most notable features are the Greek like columns surrounding the entrance, and the Byzantine like imposing gold dome on the roof. Architectural styles used centuries ago are often still used in today’s world and Old Stone Bank is an example of that. Old Stone Bank was constructed in 1819, and it still remains very similar to when it was created except for a couple additions. The space was used as a mutual savings bank then. In 1854, the gold dome addition was added onto …show more content…
The dome is made of gold and glass in order to contrast with the granite and make the building more stimulating. It nearly imitates the Hagia Sophia’s dome from Byzantine architecture from the outside. The Hagia Sophia was constructed from 532-537 CE and it still today remains as one of the most prominent works of art ever. It is one of the benchmark creations for all other churches and large architectural buildings in the world, and it revolutionized architecture. So, C.J. and R.J. Hall designed the dome very similar to that of the Hagia Sophia’s in order to show that it is a unique, important building in Providence. Although, the inside design of the dome of the Old West Bank differs from that of the Hagia Sophia. There are different geometries within the dome and pendentives. The pendentive is the triangular shaped space between numerous arches and the dome. In the Old West Bank, the same rectangular geometry is in the dome as well as the pendentive. In contrast, the Hagia Sophia’s dome and pendentive have different patterns and artwork. The structure of the two buildings is the same, but the design on the inside is changed in the Old West Bank. This is probably done in order to not create too many different visuals, since it is just a bank, and since it is a much smaller …show more content…
The building contains Corinthian columns from ancient Greece architecture, and it contains a similar dome and pendentive as the Hagia Sophia from Byzantine architecture. The architects of the Old Stone Bank did simplify and modernize some of the features because of budgetary reasons, not having enough space, and so it could form a good balance compared to the surrounding buildings. Overall, the Old Stone Bank is a very admired and respected building in Providence due to its use of past successful architectural
The Dome of the Rock is constructed with a wood structure encased with marble and stone mosaics. The octagonal plan has a large central space which is separated with two surrounding ambulatories. Supporting the tall cylindrical dome is four masonry piers and twelve Corinthian columns. Hagia Sophia known as Aya Sofia in Turkey, is considered it one of the most important monuments in Turkey, It tells us the history of the country and how the official religion changed from Christianity to Islam. Hagia Sophia has been through five phases. First of all the church was built by the orders of Constantine the Great in 360 A.D, They chose the same location of a pagan temple. They used wood to build it; unfortunately it was burned in 404 A.D. and no one knows who designed it. A second church was ordered to build by Theodosius II in October 415. The basilica with a wooden roof was built by architect Rufinus, but it also burned in 532. Just a few days after the destruction of the second church, the Emperor Justinian ordered to build the third. The architects who built it were Anthemius of Tralles and Isidoros Miletus. It was built in a spectacular short time, about six years, being completed in AD 537. Furthermore, they used several materials to complete this great building, such as, “large stones from quarries in porphyry from Egypt, green marble from Thessaly, black stones from the Bosporus region, and yellow stones from Syria” ( hagiasophia.com, (n.d.)). Also More than ten thousand workers were employed to build it and decorate it with gold and marbles. Moreover, the cost of building Hagia Sophia was very expensive; it may have cost about three billion dollars in today’s money. On 29 May 1453, The Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, Mehmet II, conquered Constantinople
For example, a style of Greek architecture that is still used today is the pillar. Another example of Greek architecture that is still used in modern civilization is the Parthenon. The Parthenon in particular had a tremendous influence on art. The Parthenon contained large sculptures and tapered columns. The Parthenon is an architectural role model that continues to influence our modern civilization.
The house is architecturally significant because it is one of the last examples of a simple, two- storey stone house on the gold fields. It was built in two sections, the single storey being built in 1856 had a symmetrical front facade of local coursed sandstone rubble and dressings to openings. The second section being built in 1861 was built to match the earlier part of the house with the same materials being used. Across the first floor there is an elegantly detailed cantilevered timber balcony with a hipped concave roof and with two French windows opening into it. Cantilevered balconies used to be common in Bendigo, but they are now rare, thus giving the people of Bendigo a visual of how buildings have changed throughout the years, making it a significant part of history. Along with the architectural significance is the historical significance, as it is among the few that was documented as being run as a brothel in the nineteenth century. Again this building is not an Antique or a Shrine as it is a piece of vital evidence about the past, and how houses were built and what materials were mainly used in past times which also demonstrates the evolution of Australia’s
-the dome is not spherical but rather pointed and tall and has more of a gothic shape than a classical shape while also matching the gothic church too
Filippo Brunelleschi wanted to develop a new system where they don´t need a wood structure to keep the bricks inside the curve of the dome so he developed a new ways to put the bricks together called "herringbone" to make the joint of the bricks more strong, also the dome was made by two "walls" one inside the other to support the weight of the building.
The design and structure of both the Pantheon and the Parthenon is where we get a lot of differences with few similarities. The Parthenon was built on a rectangle
The new buildings are a new architectural layer on the site, designed to emphasize the original 1850s constructions. The new building design developed from the symmetry of the original site although rather than following the centralized geometrical structures used in the 1850s, a new asymmetry was created based on the position of the northern entry to the Macquarie street Mint offices. These new structures are clearly distinguished from the older materials, yet they complement the geometric arrangements of the older, existing
Built originally as temples, we see above some ways where we can draw a difference between Ancient Rome's and Greece's building techniques. Both structures were transformed converted into churches but nowadays only the Pantheon remains one, the Parthenon is a museum. Both structures went through much degradation, specially the Parthenon but both still stand tall, marvelling everyone to this day.
The Georgian Style home became popular in the 1700 to the 1780s, almost an entire century. lasting almost a century. It was based of a 16th century style Italian
Ancient Greek society is renowned for its remarkable and inspiring architecture typical of Greek temples. From their beautiful, ornate columns to their picturesque statues, the architecture of the Ancient Greeks was copied and emulated. Roman architecture was influenced heavily by the Greek style and often imitated it. The Greek style is still used to decorate modern buildings. Government buildings, like the U.S. State Capital, often have Greek style columns and design elements. Their style of architecture has endured centuries of revolving fashions and remained popular.
First off this building was neoclassical meaning based off of roman and greek buildings. This shows as to why it had been designed like this with dome and columns. I also found that George Washington had some role in this too, on one website it mentioned how he had chosen such designs. I do believe the reason they did this was to show their great influence from Greek and Rome and their big triumph to create the U.S. As for the dome it was modified a bit from Greek or Roman taste since the top was rounded. This also was meant to represent the the influence these places had when the ¨nations founders framed a new republic¨
For as long as it has been a city, Athens has been a center for Greek culture and Western civilization. As the birthplace of Doric architecture, the buildings of Athens are an example of the Athenians’ intelligence and wealth. Whether it is the Acropolis, Zeus’ Temple, or the Parthenon, the buildings of ancient Athens were a monumental turning point in Classical Architecture and architecture today.
Take a look at pictures of the White House or Capitol Building, or stand on the green grass of Washington mall and see for yourself. These buildings, standing so prestigious, have pillars and arches, standing so tall. These buildings have many of the same features of the building in Rome. The breathtaking marble stone is what composes the unique structure of the Capitol building, which is what the Colosseum in Rome is also composed of. The architectural ideas captured in many buildings in the United States, such as the Capitol building and the White House, were invented by Romans. This group of people learned to create buildings that could stand for thousands of years and they used this idea to expand the Roman empire. Because of Roman’s
The grand architecture stood out the moment you walked onto the grounds. Very ornate and regal. The Romans brought a lot of new ideas to architecture, of which are the arch, baked brick and the use of concrete cement. We can contribute constructed items such as sewer systems, baths, aquaducts, amphitheaters, tombs, palaces or halls to them. The White House has six iconic columns on its façade which was an inspiration from Roman Architecture. Their style of architecture is a perfect example of innovation and experimentation. It gave mankind buildings that they never have seen before. It provided citizens an appeal. Today, we are still drawn to beautiful spaces and buildings. That is what allures the public to proceed to enter an establishment.
