In 1840, Dickens agreed to edit “Master Humphrey’s Clock”, a story of the 1780 Gordon Riots. Many of his ideas and thoughts were from his happiness in his marriage, some from the death of his beloved sister-in-law, Mary who died at age seventeen in Charles arms and memories of his life growing up. Years later, he began writing and publishing his first planned novel, “Dombey and Son.” After that, he wrote an autobiography about David Copperfield. He also wrote exposes for hospitals about sanitary conditions. In 1852 to 1857, Dickens wrote three more novels. His last novel written before his death was “Our Mutual Friend” (Marks 3). In 1867, he left again to tour the United States and continued to publish his readings until he died. His busy workload put stress on his body and health. On June 8, 1870, Charles suffered a stroke at his residence. Dickens died the next day, on June 9, 1870, at Gad’s Hill. He was buried in Westminster Abbey. Charles did not get to finish writing his novel, “The mystery of Edwin Drood” (Wilson).
