It’s a Tuesday night at the Showcase Cinemas in Revere, MA. To our right, a family sits impatiently, waiting to quickly rush out of the theater just as soon as the film ends. To our left, teenagers anxiously whisper, “I hope Dexter and Em end up together!” and other similar sentiments. After witnessing an hour of strife, miscommunication and regret, the audience hopes to see the trite, fairy-tale ending that frequents many romantic movies. However, my mother and I know that One Day, a movie based on the novel written by David Nicholls, will not end in the way that the rest of the audience had imagined.
Movies hold great importance in my life, but not for reasons that one would expect. Back in the fall of 2011, my mom and I reluctantly accepted our new reality, which meant that a house fit for five would only hold two for a large portion of the year. Since both of my siblings were attending college and my father was working countless hours of overtime at General Electric, we found ourselves alone for days at a time. Both of us knew that, eventually, silence's cold hands would take hold of our sanity. The stale air, the slow ticking of the clock, the loneliness- we needed a way to escape it. Movies became our solution.

Upon this discovery, our small tradition was born. Every week, we scoured newspaper listings and online websites for movies that had exciting potential. The ones we chose fell under varying genres. Each movie evoked a different feeling; we felt the suspense of Mission: Impossible- Ghost Protocol, experienced the mystery in Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, and belly-laughed during Bridesmaids. As years passed, our tradition became more than simple exploitation of presented opportunity; it evolved into the pastime that kept me grounded and happy during the years when the pangs of loneliness were so
Films are a large part of our lives here in America where we depend on them to do when we’re bored with nothing to do, or when the snow or rain is falling. We all use movies as a common way to go on dates and be with friends. However, there has become an abundance amount of movies that we can all enjoy throughout our lives. Although not all movies are interesting to all viewers depending on their personality and what they like to watch. I can say for myself that a film that I really enjoy would be “Mean Girls”. In the two thousand four film “Mean Girls” there is a sense of entertainment that helps in combining all the aspects found in a classical film. Classical films having a entertaining and dramatic plot, and a excellent cast.
In “Why Movies Still Matter,” by Richard Brody, Brody clarifies about Raftery’s published article, “Could This Be the Year Movies Stopped Mattering,” and believes the approach of his article was directed the wrong way, yet providing valid points. By going into depth, he defends his opinion on why individuals should still be aware about the movie’s importance and existence.
In “A Century of Cinema”, Susan Sontag explains how cinema was cherished by those who enjoyed what cinema offered. Cinema was unlike anything else, it was entertainment that had the audience feeling apart of the film. However, as the years went by, the special feeling regarding cinema went away as those who admired cinema wanted to help expand the experience.
Movies have the ability to transport people to different times and places and distract them from ordinary everyday reality. They allow for a range of emotions to be experienced. At their core, movies examine the human condition. There are plenty of deeper truths woven into screenplays and plenty of lessons to be learned, even when an individual is solely seeking entertainment.
Although the best reasons for “going to the movies” are to be entertained and eat popcorn, understanding a film is actually quite complex. Movies are not only a reflection of life, they also have the capability of shaping our norms, values, attitudes, and perception of life. Through the media of film, one can find stories of practically anything imaginable and some things unimaginable. Movie-makers use their art to entertain, to promote political agendas, to educate, and to present life as it is, was, or could be. They can present truth, truth as they interpret it, or simply ignore truth altogether. A movie can be a work of fiction, non-fiction, or anything in-between. A film is an artist’s interpretation. What one takes away from a film depends upon how one interprets what has been seen and heard. Understanding film is indeed difficult.
The American television film The Day After is a 1980s-science fiction film dramatizing the catastrophic events resulting from a nuclear fallout between the United States and the Soviet Union. The movie documents the accustomed lives of two diverging families in three distinct, chronological stages. The first phase begins in a pre-war period during which Dr. Russell Oakes and his wife, Helen, a noble Kansas City family, receive word from their daughter that she will be moving to Boston. Meanwhile, in the bordering state of Missouri, the Dahlberg’s, a rural family of five, are preparing for the upcoming marriage of their eldest child, Denise. Amid these monumental changes, the families are further burdened by an emergency broadcast, warning a sudden declaration of war.
We all have a week or a month, when things are not as expected! Let me go back to one such week in 2017 it was the week that everything that happened was not expected. Before retelling the story, characters have to be introduced. The main characters are Noor, Alya, Abdullah, Aziz and I. They are my siblings. As for the other three, they are my girl cousins their names are Jawahar, Maha and Ghalya. As for the characters that are unnecessary and will only be mentioned once, they are my Aunt’s son and my Uncle’s son. Also, there are Ahmed, my Father, and Fahad my cousin who have both passed away. It was unexpected to have a week of grief.
“I’m going to make a name for myself. If I fail, you will never hear of me again” Edward James Muggeridge. True to his words he succeeded in making a name for himself and he created the first movie or “motion picture”. Movies are a rollercoaster ride that transcends people into a whole different world fresh out of somebody’s imagination as seen through the genres of horror, drama, and science fiction. The movie business allows people to break through the burden of everyday life. Considering today’s way of life, people would be lying if they did not admit that movies are an influential entity in our culture. Movies have been successful in ingraining values and elements into society. Movies exaggerate, sensationalize and at
Ever since I was a young kid I have always been interested in movies. My grandma, who was full of the wise the life experience left, always knew about my interest in movies. She feed my vain for the art. Even though her religion, she professed Adventist of seven-day religion, didn't let her go to the cinema, she always found the way to took me to the cinema. She and I enjoyed watch movies. We used to sit in the darkness room, with our faces illuminated from the reflection of the light which rebooted from the screen, both absorbs in the plot of the movie which made us laughed or cried. After the movie, while we went back to her home, she started to talk about the movie. She had a particular point of view where the main story
Stories are magic; that’s what my old literature told me. They can transport you to the furthest reaches of space, to the far distant past, to the arms of a lover, to the death of your comrades, even if it is all a lie. He was right: Stories are magic, they are the one magical thing we have in this world. Movies are the best way to tell a story; to show the world your story, to make your story -- your lie, you untrue truth -- beautiful, to make it terrible, ugly, bold, stunning, unbelievable, and most importantly, to make them real. I love film. It is my passion, my life; I was raised on them, before I could walk my mom had put Star Wars in my little VHS tv. I know I am meant to make movies, but in their current state, they infuriate me.
“The purpose of this paper is to write about the similarities and difference of two movies: The Choice and The Notebook. Nicholas Sparks really knows how to set a romantic/emotional, but also creates a very predictable love story plot-line. You could predict the ending before the movie started with only knowing who the movie was based on a Nicholas Sparks novel. There is always a boy who falls for a girl and has to work extremely hard to get her. Then, something happens, but in the end they are always together. The Notebook and The Choice both show how life is about choices, you have to fight for what you love, and the good guy wins; but, in The Choice the ending will leave you wanting to know more about these characters and their story and that is why The
Fast forward to mid-March. The Match is here; the excitement is palpable with every fourth year medical student present. Their elation induces a roar of chatter among colleagues, family, and friends. The announcer moves to the microphone and the room falls silent as he picks the first letter and reads the first name – 258. A wave of confusion, followed by whispers, rolls through the crowd, but a student stands up, moves to the stage, opens her letter, announces her residency, and then picks the next number. This would be a devastating ceremony to many if our STEP score was read aloud instead of our name, but the game is subtler, and we know it all too well.
Mom and Dad had their eight kids to contend with and boom, Dad suddenly out of work. My Dad, always charming and charismatic as Mom's own father, had job offers galore. They see an entertaining movie about conflict that sparks the sense of adventure in them. But do they really grasp what the movie can teach the viewers? With today’s society, the themes are lost in the entertainment purposes. However, books have developed to do what a movie does and so much more.
