Introduction
Kate has asked me to research what would be the most efficient way for her business to connect all her computers via the network. She wants me to describe what would be best for her, by researching and describing operating systems, protocols, cabling topologies, wireless connectivity and devices.
Operating Systems
There are four main types of network operating systems, which are Windows Server, Linux, OSX and UNIX. These different types of operating systems could all be used in Kate’s computers but some will be more efficient for what Kate’s business will need.

UNIX operating systems have a similar graphical user interface to Microsoft Windows, so provides an easy to use environment. It allows more one user to use the machine at the same time and also allows more than one program to be run at the same time. It’s a reliable operating system which provides operation of database systems, automatic backup and recovery, network access and programmability.
Linux is an operating system that allows the computer to enable application and the computer operator to access the devices on the computer to perform different functions. Linux operating system is used on computers, laptops, navigation systems and some phones and is also free to use. Linux doesn’t get viruses very often since it’s not a very popular operating system.
Protocols
Protocols are used in a network, to define formal standards and policies made up of rules, procedures and formats that secure the communication between multiple devices over a network. Network protocols regulate processes to secure and managed data or network communication, but must be established and installed by the sender and the receiver to ensure network/data communication can communicate on a network. Protocols are established by international agreements and ensure that computers everywhere can communicate with each other. There are a variety of protocols for different kind of information and functions.
