What would the world be? If we didn’t learn history in school or in life by others. If we don’t learn History we would commit the errors from the past. Knowing History brings us to a better future because it makes us think twice of what we need to do to become greater in a future. Having everyone involved in the voting system gives us greater advantages of getting what we desire like equal rights for everyone. Who really has the Power in the political system of the United States? How is political power corrupted in ways that cause oppression? How have people used their knowledge of history to empower themselves to change oppressive political system?
History is happening all around us, whether it is affecting us positively or negatively. History is an occurrence of events that have made an impact so big that we emphasize them today. From the Sumerians, to the latest recorded history, we are creating history within. History is happening every day, but it is up to us the retreat back the occurrences of the past life. It is because of history that we function the way we do. For example, through the 15th century, occurrences happened, for example the diversity of people seen throughout the new world. You’ll see that conflict and tension led to experiences with self-government and that the questioning of authority of the church led to diverse religions. Everything that happened in the past has led us to have the history we do today.
It was Emerson who said it best, “For nonconformity, the world whips you with its displeasure” (Porter 1155). With a detailed look of Amy Tan’s “Two Kinds” and John Updike’s “A&P,” you will find that this quote is entirely applicable in the context of oppressiveness and in the likeness of “coming of age.” These two stories document the different perspectives of two characters’ growing up and how the role of the invisible hand of oppression guides developing adolescents into mature adults; without prejudice or even forethought. The characters in question are: Sammy, an A&P store clerk whose time spent at work reveals how oppressed by society he is, and Jing-Mei, whose life and every move is dictated by the iron fist of her high-expectations
Finally, through history we can do things correctly. We might have done much better than before because we already know its history. And besides, everything that is happening today is the product of history. It helps us become more efficient in decision making, one starts to inquire and be interested in things that may greatly affect lives in the present and
First of all, history is influential because it teaches people in groups, individuals, or as nations how humans perceive a complicated situation. Furthermore, how humans solve these complications is something we are also taught. In this
Americas history is what defines us and who we are as a country. We were built on hard work, sacrifice, wanting to be free and independent to be who we want to. Now a-days, we seem to have fallen away from this. Everything is given to us so easily on our computer and through technology that we have no need to work hard anymore. This is the downfall in humanity because as we keep going, life will continue to get easier and we won’t want to do anything. History is our hope so that we can learn from what we did in our past and how things were done then. For starters, we can see what mistakes we did and make sure we don’t do them again. If we continue to the same thing over and over again, there’s no way for our society to improve from this. Our
Most people believe that the only way to get they want is to go to war or revolt against those who treat them badly. Some people also fear that good and honest people will turn to this type of violence to get what they want because it worked in the past. Look how the Pueblo Indians dealt with the Spanish, how Thomas Paine believed the only way to get their freedom from Britain was to encourage everyone to join the fight, and how Thoreau was afraid of expanding America because it meant the increase in slavery and in the chance slaves would turn on the United States of America to win their own freedom. History can be used to learn about our past and to see how it has affected the way the world acts today.
History is such a significant thing in the United Sates, and to our counterparts all over around the world. It has many purposes that help advance us, and it creates a source to learn from what was successful and unsuccessful. History in simpler terms is a preservation of thought during a certain period of time, documented by a person. This is why, it is important to think about how history has currently been documented and written. Often the source of our history comes from a person on one side, which usually is the more privileged side. This privileged side is able to fabricate a perfected image of themselves, and leave out the details of people with different perspectives. This is why I agree strongly with Robert Zinn’s Quote on history, and I believe that because of the amount of subjectivity in history there is not a such thing as impartial history.
Why is it that knowing our past history is so important to our society? Would it be easier to just leave what is meant to be in the past, in the past and focus on the present and future? These are questions that historians would never dare ask because history has formed what is considered our present, without it people would not know how ancient Greece came to be or when America was founded. It’s not every day that there is someone that has the courage to stand out in society, it’s usually about following the rules and falling in line with what is considered normal. When one steps out of line people will listen or wonder as to what it is for. History is made every single day from new laws being put into place to abnormal movements. We take
History is the foundation of everyone alive and deceased. Everyone in this world leaves a piece behind and marks the world in their own way. In history, important people who have done horrible and good things in this world have been recorded and displayed to children in schools. I mostly agree with the “The Politics of History by Howard Zinn” because it displays the fact that nearly every event in history has been done with a motive and has had consequences. A quote from Zinn’s work represents this is, “History is not inevitably useful.
Knowledge of the past helps us learn from mistakes people made, keep the people who will protect our future in power, and make better
In the year of 1787, delegates met in Philadelphia to write the Constitution. Tyranny, a type of government with an absolute ruler, was a fear. One way to keep that from happening was separate the powers of the central government and state government. It provided a double security and gives certain powers to everyone. (DOC A)
A past that plays a significant role in the present was the American Revolutionary War because that’s how America became independent and became free from the British forces. If America hadn’t beaten the British, we would still be under their control and still acting like slaves for them. There would not be men called the founding fathers. There would not be a government system like we have today in America, and we wouldn’t be called the United States of America today. After the war, one of the leaders who led the rebel army was George Washington, later on after the war he became the first ever president of the United States of America. The presidential seat has been passed on throughout generations till this day as Barrack Obama is our 44th president currently. After the war, America began to make a political system and as each year passes by it has became stronger and stronger. By winning this war it other countries gain respect for America because they pushed out a whole army out of the country. Sooner the government made laws that would keep America safe and strong with very little chaos. These laws are one of the biggest reasons of how the United States of America is today.
The history of a country is usually deep and complex. This is the same for the United States. The U.S history is very complex with lots of history, including the making of the U.S constitution. The making of our “rulebook” was important because it fixed issues with the Article of Confederation. But, we needed a way to fix the problem of Tyranny. And they did. I think the Government stopped tyranny by Separating powers, checks and balances, and keeping Voting Amounts inline.
Singapore 's former Prime Minster, Lee Kuan Yew once said: "Human beings, regrettable though it may be, are inherently vicious and have to be restrained" (Kwang, Fernandez, & Tan 1). One can infer from Kuan Yew’s statement that he 's subtly saying that individuals shouldn 't be in control of their choices, yet there ought to be somebody to settle on choices for them. An ideology such as this can stem from an authoritarian government. In this day and age, most nations have a tendency to have a democracy. However, it wasn 't generally that way. Throughout history, there were nations under authoritarian rule. In order to fully understand what an authoritarian regime is, one must know the meaning of it. An authoritarian government is "an oppressive regime that rules through strict, intrusive, and violent enforcement of laws. It can “take the form of a dictatorship, but may also manifest itself in totalitarian bureaucracies or oligarchies" (Ritter 576). An authoritarian regime exists when a leader or a small group of leaders owns all property and are the sole decision makers for the entire population. There are only two questions left to be asked. How are authoritarian regimes created and how do they even stay in power? Authoritarian governments ascend to power due to a postwar upheaval and the leader in the charge; they stay in power by employing a resource trap and having a one party system.
Winston Churchill once remarked that “democracy is the worst form of government except all the others that have been tried”. In agreement with his statement, this paper will examine the problems of democratic governments using specific examples, and compare it to the failure of fascist governments in Nazi Germany and Italy and communist governments in the Soviet Union and China.
