When writing this particular song, 5 Seconds of Summer was going through a struggle with their record company. The record company wanted the band to look and sound a certain way, even though that is not how the band themselves wanted to look or sound. When singing about their disagreement, the band says: “So sick of the tug of war, that keeps pulling me under” (48) and “So close to the other side, so far from the wonder” (46). However, “I got one foot in the golden life, [and] one foot in the gutter” (45) mentions their luck and successes, but does not forget their hardships with their label. When singing “Love me like you did, love me like you did / I’ll give you anything” (33-34) the desperation that comes along with the disagreement shines through. The band’s producer, John Feldman, says: “After... standing up for yourself for what you think is the right record... you get burned out...At the end...We had this flip in mentality: Wow, as hard as this is, we’re doing what we love.” 5 Seconds of Summer outlasted the ignorance of their label, and today they are one of the most successful bands in the world.
In conclusion, the most meaningful phrase in “Outer Space / Carry On” by 5 Seconds of Summer is “Outlast the ignorance” (51) because it sheds light on mental illness and instructs the listener to be who they want to be. When listening to the song, the listener gets many
Countless people around the world listen to various styles of music. Despite the genre, whether it be country or hip hop, these songs deliver a message onto it’s listeners daily. Same songs could have a different meaning to different people depending on the experiences that they go through or the tribulations that one is currently facing. Spotless Minds by Jhene Aiko offers a message about love and how although love could be a blessing, it can also act as a curse. This song should not be viewed as merely a song, but more like a lesson that is teached using only a few lyrics. The deeper the context, the more meaning the song will have on particular people. The art in the way these lyrics are carefully composed, when sung, conveys a bittersweet message that reminds listeners of the joys and miseries of love as well as the experiences that Jhene went through. The lyrics, the deeper meanings hidden behind stanzas, and the relatability of this song are reasons why Spotless Minds is an interesting yet harsh reality that love isn’t how people see it in the movies. This song carries in it a meaning of true love that yearns to be heard around the world. Whether heard by a married couple or a high school relationship that is still blossoming, this song speaks to all who are willing to listen.
Pink Floyd’s “The Wall” album has entered the cultural norm as a contemporary masterpiece of art, but it also continues to be an excellent vehicle for the analysis of the results of mental trauma in modern society. Inspired by the personal life of Roger Waters, the band’s bass guitarist and lyricist, “The Wall” tells the narrative of a fictional character named Pink. Pink’s life is full of misfortunes associated with the development of a post WWII society, and the album shows that inability of humanity to rationalize with modern existence. By creating a figurative, mental wall Pink shelters his psyche, or self, from the horrors of the outside world, but also abandons his humanity. Through the psychoanalytical work of Sigmund Freud, Pink’s wall can be justifiably built by the early death of his father, abusive school teachers, and his unique Oedipus complex.
In Logic’s album, he creates a universal theme of peace, love, and positivity that flows throughout the songs and lyrics he writes, and this universal theme encourages listeners to be the best version of themselves. As listeners listen to the lyrics that Logic has created, they are immediately touched with an overwhelming fear of sadness and excitement. This sadness stems from the personal and universal problems of racism and discrimination, while the excitement stems from the
The song expresses how people are not living up to society's values and norms. It suggest that the socialization is at fault and that they contribute to improvement of self being. The song implies the way society goes against values and norms by one of the very first lyrics in the song. The lyric goes, “What’s wrong with the world, mama, People livin’ like they ain’t got no mamas…” (lines 1-2). This makes one aware of the lack of values in one's family. Values is the belief or an idea that a person or group has to determine is correct or not. Another verse of how the band shows one disobedience of the values and norms comes toward the middle of the song. “People killin', people dyin’, Children hurt and you hear them cryin, Can you practice what you preach, And would you turn the other cheek…” (lines 50-53). These verses show of society has failed to act stable and logical way that society once viewed as correct living. These actions show that citizens have not lived up to the expectations of society. Social norms are likes the laws of society. Laws are things that are illegal behaviour and norms are like behaving in a way society wouldn’t like. For example being in gangs, like the bloods, or the crips, or a big group that goes against society's norms like racial groups. An example of a racial group would be the KKK.
Shallow lyrics that fail to evoke much thought can be detrimental to a listener's intellectual health. Many developed countries have seen declines in reading proficiency and the superficial
This song is concentrated on the social construction of reality, which talks about about how “Ideas about reality also change over time” (Newman, 53). We can see this expressed in lines 32-33 in the song : “It just ain't the same, old ways have changed/New days are strange, is the world insane…” (lines 32-33) The band states how the world’s views and attitudes have changed and how there is uncertainly for the future. The band is questioning the values that they once lived up to. “Yo', whatever happened to the values of humanity/Whatever happened to the fairness in equality/ Instead of spreading love we're spreading animosity/ Lack of understanding, leading lives away from unity…” (lines 71-74). They imply that individuals are swaying away from their values, as a result changing their reality.
Living in a perfect society. Depressed. Anthem is a story where they live in a perfect society. Our world now is almost becoming that., Being controlled by our government. Being controlled by the cops, the government. Being depressed plays a big part in our society. Having people commit to things they don't want to make, which makes them feel awkward and uncomfortable.
So why would the band choose to illustrate such a serious stage of personal development with the nursery rhyme-like style of the song's chorus? Before we get to that, the song's emotional and psychological message must first be examined.
There is a plethora of music that expresses the misunderstanding and isolation one goes through while in a corrupted state of mind. Recently, in late 2017, Logic’s song “1-800-273-8255” was on the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards. This song was specifically written to prevent suicide, as it’s named after the suicide prevention hotline. Those who suffer from any mental disorder, not just depression, can feel the need to take their own lives to escape the pain of their illness. In reality, it is not a solution. In Logic’s song, the lyrics change from “I don’t wanna be alive,” to “I want you to be alive,” and “I finally wanna be alive,” implying that the person’s change of heart was sparked by someone else begging them to stay. If not for someone trying to understand what they are going through, they most likely would have had second thoughts. Not only is the story of the music powerful and relevant, but it can help people struggling with the same
Music is a universal way in which people connect, and it does this through its use of literary devices to make the songs meaningful while still appealing. The song, “Wait and See,” uses literary devices like similes and metaphors to contribute to the theme of society’s mistakes and their impacts on the
We picked this song for many reasons. The first being that this song describes how the blacks felt as they were taking a stand for equality for all. “Ain’t gonna let injustice turn me around…” is a prime example as to how people of color wanted to prove that nothing could stand in the way of them fighting for their freedom. This song demonstrates the word state in many ways. The song is very repetitive in that it always repeats the phrase ”Ain’t gonna let ___ turn me around”. This shows how no matter what society throws at those who are fighting for their right to be equal, nothing will stop them from marching on. The song is also trying to prove a few key points. First, it’s trying to send the message that no matter how much you are put down you always have to keep fighting for what you believe in. The second message is that you should never let someone else’s opinion stop you from what you want to accomplish with your life. Keeping these two points in mind
Lastly, Chapman illustrates that even though a journey may not have given you what you thought it would, it will often bring newfound maturity, sense of reality and greater understanding of life. Throughout the whole song, the persona is shown as being very determined, and

In the song spaceship by Kesha, the title suggests a song about outer space and aliens. It could be about traveling in a spaceship or aliens coming to Earth in a spaceship. Though the upbeat, country vibe of the song it is revealed that spaceships are a metaphor for life after death. Throughout the song Kesha sings about her excitement that the spaceship coming and saving her from the stresses of life on Earth, and about how death only brings humanity to the next great adventure. In Kesha’s spaceship the main theme is that life can be difficult and filled with hate and negativity, but there is a place reached after death and in ones dreams that is full of love and joy.
At first glance, David Bowie 's Space Oddity would seem to be a patriotic theme song for the soon-to-be-launched Apollo 11 mission. While such assumptions would be fairly based considering the BBC used the song in its coverage of the moon landing, Space Oddity is much more profound and metaphorical in meaning. As it was actually written, this song provides a view into the artist 's rise to fame, drug problems, and changing perspective on the world.
