Imagine you are drowning, as the current pulls you under and the water fills your lungs you’re filled with a sense of hopelessness. You can try and fight the current but what’s the use? You look upwards and see the sunlight filter through the water and you’ll think of everything you loved to do, how meaningless and mundane the activities are now. After a while you stop fighting, you’re overcome with a numbing, unescapable sadness and you accept it. This is depression.

What is depression? Depression is a mental illness which affects more than half a million New Zealanders and an unknown number of undiagnosed cases each year. More than just a temporary “bummed out” feeling it can last weeks, months and even years at a time in severe patients. The fact that it can effect anyone at any time in their lives (with some personality types and genders more commonly effected such as transgendered or non-binary people) makes it one of the most commonly diagnosed mental illnesses in the world. So what do I do if I’m concerned I have depression? Don’t panic, make an appointment with your doctor and they’ll discuss what’s been going on with you and your moods. After an assessment and if the doctor thinks the pros will outweigh the cons they’ll prescribe antidepressants. Antidepressants are not a miracle one off cure, they’ll simply make the symptoms easier to manage. Next making some lifestyle changes will help incredibly well such as setting a routine, eating healthy and regularly, regular exercise, surrounding yourself with loving and supporting people and trying to keep a positive outlook in life such as enjoying the little things and taking time to appreciate what you have in
